Cluess

Cluess is so hard to figure out.

One one hand he’s 0-6 in the NCAA tournament, but on the other hand he’s played those games as a 16th seed which is brutal.

You may think if he has some Big East players a la a Heron, a Williams, a Figueroa or a Steere he could do some damage with that. But he may get exposed going against the Villanova’s or Marquette’s of the world.

Tough to figure out
I think Cluess will be prepared to succeed at the BEC level. A solid staff could facilitate any 'transition' hiccups. The guy has great creds 'developing players'...does that stop with 3* & 4* players--the kind of guys we recruit?
I think Clues would prove out.
Probably the job he's wanted his entire career.
He would not let that slip from his grasp.
I don't know about that. He once told me has just loves to coach basketball and it really didn't matter where. I believe him.
He told me he didn't care if it was holy trinity hs (freshman coach), st Mary's, Suffolk cc, post, or even our town CYO or intramural. He's the real deal as a coach - this is the one thing in life he wants to do, and his teams gave always won
Thanks Beast. That makes me like the guy even more. Just thinking, SJU would be a job he'd love and that he'd bust his gut--as he would anywhere of course--to cement his legacy at his Alma Mater.
Kind of 'human nature' to want that to happen.
But who knows, I could be wrong.

Why not, though? Grasso is still young. Why not leave Bryant at this point to rejoin his mentor at a high major school in NYC, successfully help turn SJU around in the largest media capital on the planet, and hone his resume for a bigger leap elsewhere in a few years?
Maybe 'longer' odds but not a crazy notion.
Pretty crazy to me. You work hard to become a HC. That's the ultimate. Sure it's been done probably by someone. But it would be a bad look.
Matt Painter did it, but there was a reason for it and a short timeline.

Didn’t sit well with Slice... lol

He would have been a better choice four years ago. Not sold on it now.
60 is the new 50, LJSA.
And if not Hurley (and it looks like 'not'), he may be the best 'other' choice at this time...which we have 'none' to waste btw. Lol.
Age isn't an issue with me at all. The process will be slower with him because he's not a sexy enough name to fill all the holes we'll soon have headed into next season. Plus the whole "no defense" thing is out there.
Good points LJSA. But next year would likely be a 'transition / rebuild' year for most any HC we'd hire--even Hurley.
We shall see.
Would Grasso be a candidate at Iona? And would he go back?
I think so

I hear you, Moose. Solid point. But Grasso has been at Bryant just 1 year, to leave to be the Associate HC at a high major and help turn that program around might 'look good' at some point.
Who knows?

Yup, great point! Never mind. Lol.

There is also a very good reason he is not already running a big time program ejsewhere, and it's nothing I would publicly share. But it only adds to the story if what a good man he is.

Trust me. I disliked him from afar before I met him. He is one of the most direct and honest people I've ever met, and respectful to people who know far less about basketball than him (like me). I think our fans will love him, especially when we are ranked again.

Wow, thanks Beast.
Now, I hope he's our new HC.

It's my understanding that Cluess is happy living where he is and wasn't interested in pursuing jobs that would have required him to move from Floral Park. He wouldn't be a "sexy" pick but would be a solid choice IMO.

I am anti-Cluess (for STJ coach, not as an individual) and I'm not trying to dump on anyone's parade, but Zach Braziller tweeted a contrarian view. This is purely FYI.

Iona sources say it has not heard from St Johns about speaking to Tim Cluess. #sjubb

I'm getting the sense that this coaching search is running about as well as all our coaching searches.
Actually I would be open to cluess if he surrounded himself with a good staff
I think Cragg will place Borman and Hsu into the mix for TC to consider.
I was hoping Grasso would also rejoin Tim, but LJSA wisly noted that Jared Grasso would likely be a top candidate--seconded by Paultz--for the Iona vacancy.
Easy come, easy go.
Lol.
But I'm sure Tim Cluess would cobble together a great staff and work like hell to succeed here.
Seems like Jon Scheyer is also a top candidate for the HC job.
I prefer Cluess.
But we shall see.

He just wants to live near Ralph and olv72. And wants in on section 114

The last time we hired a proven winner from the MAAC with abundant local ties, he only brought us Artest, Jessie, Bootsy, Barkley and the core of the best team since Walter Berry wore red.

But hey it's only the MAAC.....

That’s odd RSR2. Paultz posted a link from Zagoria earlier that said St. John’s and Cluess are talking and that ‘it’s close’.
Just FYI, but who knows?

Since going to Iona, has Cluess's name ever been mentioned for any other coaching vacancies?

He's made it known he had no interest leaving the NY area. So that limits the possible choices
