Cluess

Since going to Iona, has Cluess's name ever been mentioned for any other coaching vacancies?
He's made it known he had no interest leaving the NY area. So that limits the possible choices
Was Timmy ever in the mix for the Hofstra job ????????????

Not just a preference

In addition to Moose’s point, Beast alluded earlier to ‘personal reasons’ why Cluess isn’t HC of high major programs elsewhere.

In 2013, his name came up with the Hofstra opening. Depends who you believe, either Cluess turned them down or he was a plan C at Hofstra.

I'm bias, but I think he wasn't in serious contention because Hofstra is more prestigious and pays more than Iona. Why wouldn't you make that to your alma mater?

Glad I read the thread, as it is becoming apparent that Cluess is A) a hell of a coach and B) a really good guy who loves coaching up his team. As time goes on, it seems like he’d be a good hire. Maybe not the sexiest name out there, but we do need a coach with not only experience, but also someone who wants to be here, and will make us better. We could always do worse!

He told me he wss 4th on the list to be interviewed when they only interviewed 3 when there was a vacancy 8 years ago. Then the new coach had that drunken driving incident and he laughed that had they interviewed 4 he would have been in the mix even if he didn't get the job initially

Well, according to the piece Moose just shared, Cluess was considered the top candidate for the Hofstra job but returned to Iona.
So...

One one hand he’s 0-6 in the NCAA tournament, but on the other hand he’s played those games as a 16th seed which is brutal.

You may think if he has some Big East players a la a Heron, a Williams, a Figueroa or a Steere he could do some damage with that. But he may get exposed going against the Villanova’s or Marquette’s of the world.

Tough to figure out
I think Cluess will be prepared to succeed at the BEC level. A solid staff could facilitate any 'transition' hiccups. The guy has great creds 'developing players'...does that stop with 3* & 4* players--the kind of guys we recruit?
I think Clues would prove out.
Probably the job he's wanted his entire career.
He would not let that slip from his grasp.
I don't know about that. He once told me has just loves to coach basketball and it really didn't matter where. I believe him.
He told me he didn't care if it was holy trinity hs (freshman coach), st Mary's, Suffolk cc, post, or even our town CYO or intramural. He's the real deal as a coach - this is the one thing in life he wants to do, and his teams gave always won
Thanks Beast. That makes me like the guy even more. Just thinking, SJU would be a job he'd love and that he'd bust his gut--as he would anywhere of course--to cement his legacy at his Alma Mater.
Kind of 'human nature' to want that to happen.
But who knows, I could be wrong.
There is also a very good reason he is not already running a big time program ejsewhere, and it's nothing I would publicly share. But it only adds to the story if what a good man he is.

Trust me. I disliked him from afar before I met him. He is one of the most direct and honest people I've ever met, and respectful to people who know far less about basketball than him (like me). I think our fans will love him, especially when we are ranked again.
It's my understanding that Cluess is happy living where he is and wasn't interested in pursuing jobs that would have required him to move from Floral Park. He wouldn't be a "sexy" pick but would be a solid choice IMO.
He just wants to live near Ralph and olv72. And wants in on section 114
OLV72 is leading the Cluess Bandwagon parade on our message chain

The story I related occurred when he was at cw post in 2010 when Tim Welsh was hired and fired within a few days. Instead of interviewing again they went down the list. Not surprising that they considered him again a couple of years later

So... you're going with the he turned them down option. That's fine. I have no insider knowledge wrt Tim Cluess or the hiring practices of Iona, Hofstra or St. John's.

I am just skeptical that he would turn down more money and a more prestigious school to remain at Iona. And if he is willing to do that, who's to say that he won't do the same to St. John's.

And if he does, then we are the school that got turned down by a 60 year old mid-major coach that is 0-6 in the NCAA tournament.

Just for once, I'd like to see us spend a little money, hire a search firm, do some due diligence and run a full process to the best of the BOT's abilities. At least that way, we can identify, candidate A, B, C, and D, know our budget and act accordingly.

Lol Tim Cluess is not rejecting St. John’s.
I'm sure people said that about Hofstra too.
As I said he’s not rejecting St.Johns.

We don’t have the luxury of conducting a national search RSR2. We face roster turmoil and need to replace about 5 ‘ships late in the recruiting period.
Plus, Cragg seems to have ID’d his List, making a national search a moot point.
If we don’t get Hurley and I don’t think we will at this point, I prefer Tim Cluess to be our next HC.
I think he’ll work like hell to succeed.
It’s in his DNA and it’s for his Alma Mater.
