Chris Obekpa

Moose - do you believe we have a shot? - you seem well connected on the recruiting front and convinced that we had no chance with him. Thoughts?...
(I guess the most interesting piece of evidence is that Mr. Obeka hasn't committed anywhere yet.....)

I was told and many other 'insiders' here that the ship had sailed. If this is in fact true, I'm surprised but not shocked. This is the crazy world of recruiting. We were out with him then all of a sudden him and his people are reaching out to visit. He disappears then and Cincy reappears with Oregon out of nowhere. Now were back in it. Who the heck knows.

Maybe this, from Zagsblog, gives him some concern:

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — One veteran NBA scout said he kept waiting and waiting for Yancy Gates to realize his potential during his time at Cincinnati.

And he never did.

“I kept waiting and kept waiting and that’s all I did, was wait for Yancy to come around and he never did,” the NBA scout told SNY.tv.

I'm not sure how things went down a few weeks ago when we dropped out of the race but if Lav and the staff were the ones to turn their backs on CO because they couldn't wait any longer or didn't think they had a shot then maybe it was the right play to make in getting his attention. Sometimes recruiting could be like wooing a female you show you're not interested anymore and they come knocking at your door. Right now I wouldn't say we are on the level of UCLA, Duke, UNC, UK but these programs purely sell themselves for the most part. With Harkless going pro and good talent in the program we no longer have to only play the "we play at the Mecca" card. We have a top coach, staff, and develop players seamlessly from what I can tell and that is what sells these days.

Well I hope he realizes that he's just going to be a situational player at STJ until he gets his offensive skills up to D1 standards.

Heard he may now be the 2nd coming of Bill Russell! >-)

I have lost my ability to detect sarcasm on this board. Was this meant to be a sarcastic post?

Knowing the poster I think it was.

Thank you . I hate seeing the seesaw opinions of Obekpa's game.

His offense is serviceable. Dunks and putbacks. Staff can help him there. He's a fantastic rebounder and shotblocker though. His timing is absolutely phenomenal. He does it without fouling too. He'd be a killer in the middle of our zones and allow our ball-hawks to take more risks. It is a crazy world of recruiting, but if we can land him I certainly would love to. He'd really complete this class and make it real well rounded. He certainly is a center in the Lavin mold as he is mobile, athletic and can ahminthe running game.

This would be a great late surprise get. Rebounding and blocks is more than enough the first year. I guess it does not look good for/with Chandler.

What does this have to do w Chandler. He is in the NCAAs hands, no different then a month ago.

Exactly.

Remember staff was chasing Obekpa and Nolan with Chandler. Many ppl stated they wanted two of them.

If by the grace of the basketball gods Chandler gets NCAA clearance and Obekpa picks SJU, we can all dream really big dreams for this group.

Not to mention I will wet my pants a little first. :woohoo:

I would love 2 of those guys, but we were told about CO "that ship has sailed" and "get off of it already" etc. urging us to stop asking about it.

If CO is back on the table, that's either because the staff knows somethng about Chandler or are uneasy waitng, and are putting a press on elsewhere (and CO not havinfg signed being fertile ground), or that CO has had a change of heart that coincidentally meets our needs.

Maybe Lavin's earlier statements of a "stellar" class always had 2 of the 3 above-mentioned bigs in the plan, although the Obekpa/Chandler combo was outside of almost everyone's realistic expectations until yesterday. What depth our front court would have with Chandler, Obekpa, Sampson, Sanchez, and GG! Almost enough to make you say, Moe who? ;)
