Chris Obekpa

Kline is going to school in Syracuse, so that is going to really put a damper being in person for any tournaments or events. I don't see how he'll be able to run anything credible from Syracuse, NY without actually seeing being physically present.

Kind of strange how Kline said he wouldn't be doing this when he was 40 because it would be creepy for a 40 year old to talk to a teenage recruit. He pretty much took a shot at every other person in the industry with that one. Let's see how welcoming those creeps are to him in the coming years.

First off, Alex doesn't go to a TON of events as it is. He does most of his communicating through Facebook, texting, calling. For what Alex does, you don't really have to go to events. He covers recruiting. He doesn't do prospect evaluating. He can do what he does mostly from the comfort of his home (or dorm). There are a lot of people in the industry (mostly some veterans) who are jealous of Alex and what he's accomplished at a young age and how he's using his technology to show that you don't have to go anywhere to cover recruiting.

As for Meyer, he and Rivals parted ways a while back I believe. I actually think Alex busts his butt to get info much more than Jerry does or has done.

Meyer and Rivals parted ways in the last Month.

any way to get the alex kline thread in an alex kline thread. not trying to gripe but I keep seeing Obekpa and hoping its about - well Obekpa - and its obviously not. Thanks

Kline and Obekpa have something in common -- they are both not coming to St. John's -- so you won't be finding what you are looking for here even if the thread stays on track.

good point...turned on my mental 'ignore Obekpa thread' sign.

There is nothing wrong with a kid taking his time, but some of the schools on his list probably aren't going to wait on him and run out of ships.

the 17th can't come fast enough imho...

But remember the 17th means nothing. He can commit anytime after that, just he is not bound by an LOI. He would then sign a financial aid agreement but can pick up and change schools a week later if he wants with no penalty.

Awful. No wonder why guys like Knight hate AAU . I had to stop watching after 3 minutes, over 10 turnovers, Opeka only playing defense and not even trying to run to half court. OUCH

One of the worst games I've ever seen. The small court make things really tough, but even Felix wasn't trying on defense. Such poor habits can be developed in those games!

No big shock... sucks though.

I really don't think he was a serious option since twittergate. We'll be fine without him. He's an excellent shotblocker, but needs tons of work on offense and defensive positioning. Chandler would be a much bigger prospect for us. May still land a kid like Pankey as well.

I don't mean to sound like too big of a homer, but I can't imagine why any recruit outside of Ohio would pick Cincy over St. John's. By my count, Cincy has one top 100 RSCI recruit on the roster this year, 2008 #93 Cashmere Wright, while St. John's could be one of only a handful of schools to start a top 75 RSCI recruit at every position.

I guess it is a fair trade. We get 2011 RSCI #40, Sampson, from Akron, Ohio and they get Obekpa, a probably RSCI top 100, from OSNA.

C'mon man, they went to the Sweet 16 and the Big East championship game this year. Cronin definitely has the program on the rise and I'm sure he's getting kids that want to be a part of that.

Plus they have the best coney dogs around. Reference to Cincy and their Skyline Chili.

skyline chili is a love it or hate it thing....and personally I hate it so Cincy can't hold a candle to NYC in the coney dog department, even if it used to be called Porkopolis.

Cinci does have a number of attractions and except for downtown, which is not too far from campus, it is a nice city with good places to eat, shop and visit. I don't think Cinci is NYC but it is not like some kid is swapping out NYC for Minot, ND.

I like the trade off though...give me a sampson for obekpa every year - assuming I can't land both that is.

Pregame at the Montgomery Inn on the river front. 6 pack of coneys at the Reds game.. If I didn't marry an Italian from SI who wouldn't move 5 feet from her mom, I would have moved to Cincy. It's not NYC.. but that was part of the allure. A 'big', little city.

One could argue they shouldnt have gone as far as they did as the slap on the wrist to the thugs like Gates would have prevented them from doing as well as they did.

Sorry, I don't see it with Cincy. I can see why a kid would choose to go to a huge state school in the boonies, I could see why a kid would go to an elite city school like UCLA or even USC, but I cannot see why any kid outside of Ohio would choose to go to a metropolitan campus in Cincy over New York.

Have you ever been to the city of Cincy? It's awful. Nearby Dayton is even worse. To top it off, Cronin is not a great coach...those Roberts-Cronin matchups were just terrible to watch. They play some really sloppy basketball, and my guess is that only gets worse with Obekpa.

Cincy will be decent next year, but they only have one (barely) top 100 RSCI player who graduates after Obekpa's first year. We have five top 75 RSCI players, and Obekpa would have made six. There is no way Cincy will compete with us in 2013-2014 or 2014-2015.

Obviously you never saw Cincy play if you think Cronin can't coach.

Obviously, I'm a homer for NY, but the fact is Mick Cronin is proving himself as one of the best young coaches in college basketball. Each year, the Cincinnati program is getting better and gaining national attention.

I love Steve Lavin, but there are still questions about him especially after the unfortunate circumstances last season. He's going to have to prove to recruits he can stay on the sideline for a full season and get SJU back to the tournament.
