Chris Obekpa

Will supposedly sign late.

Obekpa, a native of Nigeria, is considering a slew of high-major programs, including UConn, Providence, Cincinnati, UCLA, St. John’s, Georgia Tech, Florida and Kentucky. Kentucky has yet to offer.

He rescheduled an unofficial visit to UConn and will head up there sometime next week.

Obekpa is aware that UConn has produced a slew of pro big men, including several of African descent — Emeka Okafor, Hasheem Thabeet and Charles Okwandu.

“I know a bunch of the big men that went there …like the Africans,” he said.

Does that make UConn more appealing?

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, and the championship team,” he said, referring to UConn’s NCAA title.

GUESTS OF NOTE: Highly sought Chris Obepka , a 6-9 senior at L.I.) Our Savior New American in Centereach, L.I., and Mike Young , a 6-8 junior at Hudson Catholic in Jersey City, attended the game.

A while back he was talking about UConn and having a history with Nigerian players.
I believe that Gift and his athletic success (so far) will be the key in getting Obekpa who is a monster blocker from what I have read and seen. HUGE get if we can pick him up.
Gift might be someone he can relate to, might make him feel more at ease, and having another Nigerian big man, someone to look up to, and take advice from.
With him, we need Gathers back too, and our backcourt will be top in the country.

I like the idea of Obekpa along with Pelle, but would take Obekpa alone. He isn't as tall as Pelle and doesn't have much of an offensive game (at least from what I have heard on this board), but his athletic ability makes me believe he can play D at the 3/4/5-he appears very quick for his size with a defensive mind set. I agree that having GG here can't hurt at all as a draw for Obekpa. Would also be great if Gathers jumped aboard-could use his muscle. Having a mix of GG, Pelle, Obekpa, and Gathers for the PF/C spots would be excellent. One can dream.

That's what I'm hoping for. That combo at the 4/5 would be difficult for any team in the country to deal with. GG and Gathers on the offensive end and Pelle and Obekpa on the defensive end. Heck of a 4/5. Hope we can have them all here.

Any update on this guy? I would be happy with him, and Gathers, I feel like Pelle might have an attitude.

FYI, UCLA just made an offer (and is mounting a late push for local PF Zena Edosomwan. They still have outside hopes for Tony Parker, but with Reeves Nelson now definately gone for his senior year in 2013, they're looking for two. But they're getting back on Zena LATE, whidh means they have to show a LOT of love to get his interest back, most likely at the expense of an all out pursuit of Obekpa....

I think edosomwan looks good. Wish we had a chance at him. Ill gladly take obekpa though

His team scored 85 points last night, he scored 8 of them-- he also added 13 rebounds and 10 blocks.

What did Felix have.

Felix Balamou had 23 -- 7 boards, and 6 assists

They won by 30 so I'm assuming Upper Room is weak.

Assuming your getting this from Newsday since there is zero online from OSNA.

Slightly OT but Max Preps site sucks. If anyone is young ambitious and internet savvy they should start a results oriented HS bball site.
