(Charleston Classic) NORTH TEXAS, Thur., Nov. 16, 1:30p, ESPNU

What if we fouled on the scramble for the rebound? With 2.1 and no time outs they would have needed to inbound quickly on a made shit and advance past midcourt. A 3 would have won the game anyway and a foul would put them in a position to win not tie.

See sju vs. Villanova BET 2022.
Come on Beast, I’ve enjoyed most of your posts but this post is simply ridiculous. So you think that with a one point lead, with two seconds to go and the other team in the bonus, one of our players would foul someone on a rebound? Tell me Beast, do you think our players are complete idiots??????
Geeeezzzzzzzz

If they got to inbound the ball with the clock stoped, there coukd be a long pass and a makeable shot. Again, there was absolutely no justification for making that second foul shot once the first one was missed, and anyone who remotely understands the game will concur.

Some observations from court side.

1. Defense…. Grade A-, coming along nicely.

2. Offense…. Grade D and only cause they won.
In my many years of following the Johnnies, that was the most disjointed offense I have ever seen. Yes it’s early and yes they are a work in progress but the offense seems void of any sort of plan. For Soriano, who towered over their front court to take 2 shots in the first half while other less efficient players took many and mostly missed was head shaking. .

3. What’s going on with Jordan Dingle and Ledlum? Are they both not as good as advertised? Are they simply mid major players that are adjusting to a higher level of play (even though North Texas is a mid major)? Are they not fitting into Pitino’s system? Whatever it is, if they don’t come around, a predicted 5th place finish in conference may be way too high.

4. Johnnies were well represented in the stands with Dave leading the cheers.

5. I stayed for the LSU Dayton game, both are good teams and seem further along then where St. John’s is at the present time. However the game felt like, as it will tomorrow, a Dayton home game with the entire arena mostly Dayton fans along with their band cheerleaders, etc. Dayton was down 14 with minutes to go and rallied to win with a big assist from their fans.

Are we a more talented team than Dayton…yes. Are we bigger….. yes, can we win the game….. yes but this team will have to play much better, and more players will have to step up to make this happen.

Go Johnnies…..
Good chance 3 is true re: Ledlum and Dingle they don't yet look like BE starters to me. Wilcher may be getting a lot more minutes going forward. But too early to really worry

The defense was good. It’s also true that North Texas was completely inept on offense, though, and didn’t have a lot of speed. But the defense was good enough where you can reasonably see a tournament caliber d by January if you squint really hard.

Jenkins and Dingle having their expected roles flipped is what is terrifying. I don’t see how this team can be a tournament team without Dingle at least averaging 15 and handling the ball at least 25% of the time.

Ledlum didn’t seem as bad to me as others think. He was awful in Michigan but I like him more in that background role he played yesterday.
I tried to post something similar re Jenkins and Dingle during the game yesterday but the wifi in the arena sucked.

I don't think I've ever seen an alleged bucket-getter like Dingle be so passive. He legit spent half our possessions yesterday just standing on the opposite wing like a decoy. Meanwhile, Taylor has the ball his hands more than anyone other than Jenkins. I mean, there's letting the game come to you and there's whatever he was doing yesterday. And Taylor is a role playing glue guy. He's not a point forward.

They ran a play for him out of a timeout, he curled off a screen, Jenkins missed him ( of course) and that was it. Hopefully our HOF coach can figure out how to get the ball in the hands of the country's second leading scorer last year a little more.

Team D was impressive considering that end of court we knew would take time. Your other points are quite fair.

I think I’ll can my in game comments and do so post game. Sometimes my sense of humor or frustration gets best of me. 😇
We should give ourselves an overnight on post game losses. It could be a rule here, and it applies to all not remotely just you :)

As I posted when we landed Taylor, he has a very obvious problem finishing baskets. He gets into the lane fine and his handle is good for his size, but he doesn’t have any ability to finish his drives like RJ Luis does. I agree he will be a glue guy going forward.

We’ve just got to get the ball out of Jenkins’ hands at least 50% of the time. He seems better off the ball anyway. Hopefully Luis can get us into more of a PG by committee approach.

You may not be aware of something a long time coach told me in that situation - a player can dribble end to end in 2.5 seconds.

I agree that you dont want the long pass on an inbounds but that almost always results in a 3 not a two. If the player gotnwithin the 3 pt line at worst you tie.

I would be concerned about any contact in the mayhem of pushing the ball up court could be a game changing 2 shot foul (we had 10) so two chances to tie or win.

You see it differently and thats okay. I dont think rick and staff blew it.

No reason to feel confident going into this one. Dayton historically plays tough as we did vs N.T. however. We need a struggling offense to wake up.

These two losses are no upsets two really excellent teams, no shame in those. Don't be jumping off the Queensboro Bridge just yet. Our dreams of being undefeated from the get go are gone and that's ok, we will be ready for prime time come January and February

I mostly agree as the two teams we lost to were good although a decent defensive effort against Dayton in the second half could have changed that outcome. The problem here is, as we have seen in the past, if your OOC record isn’t pretty good, your chances of dancing becomes more difficult when you are a middle of the pack conference team. Another OOC loss or two and the tam will have to win at least 12-13 conference games to even be a bubble team.

Right now we do not look like a tournament team. The offense is offensive. We turn the ball over way too much, are undersized down low, and lack chemistry. Rick sent the entire team packing and will have a rebuild on his hands. Hopefully the team begins to gel and get better over the course of the season. I look forward to marked progress. I have no expectations for a top 25, NCAA team, etc. None.
