After a game like this, it might not be the worst thing in the world to get away from home for a few days.

North Texas has winning experience, which is important, but there will be an obvious talent drop off from Michigan, and we can use that, right now.

Michigan game was rough and although I'm more of a half glass full person there weren't many positives to take from it. One positive though is the team can very quickly forget about that with this game/tournament. The team also could get buried if they don't give it their all on every play this tournament.

North Texas is #88 KenPom and has some experience. This will be a tough but winnable game, I doubt the line will be more than a few points in either direction. Hoping we go at least 2-1 here and this game is arguably the most important for filling out our schedule.

Will focus on other things the next couple days but will be very excited Thursday afternoon for what will likely be a Quad 2 game (if North Texas finishes #51-100) - just the type of game that would make for an excellent rebound.

The team, after practicing either in Taffner or Carnesecca for the last almost 6 months exclusively, really needs this trip to get away.
We used to look forward to our first road trip, getting away from campus life. Charter plane, great hotels with better beds, catered buffet meals 3x a day. Excitement of traveling to a new city, hopefully Rick does a city bus tour for the players for educational reasons. Practice in a new environment, possibly meeting former teammates on other teams in tourney, all go into road trip life in these tourneys. Team bonding with new roommates, film time and study hall with our academic support staff will fill out their day!
Hope those that are going enjoy the trip and the games this week…I will be watching from Chattanooga before I head to Tuscaloosa for the Mocs vs Alabama football game Saturday. I will be meeting up with former Alabama wide receiver (84) and St. John’s former football assistant coach Bill Getchell pregame.

North Texas is a real basketball team. They just beat Northern Iowa who is a low level but real solid basketball program.

If the Johnnies play like they did last night, North Texas will win this game.

This is not a gimmie and will take a real good effort by us to win the game.

You know you fluctuate like a fart in the wind, lol. Who's to say Northern Iowa is any good, this season? Or, possibly it's too early to deem who is "real" or isn't real.

North Texas may or may not be a test on Thursday. But I'm not gonna deem they'll be a test based on beating Northern Iowa.

tallest guy is 6 9 so we will match up much better than against Michigan. I expect Joel to have a big game and foul some people out. That said we still have a lot of growing together to do and will be much better Feb than we are for the next 2 months. Up to the last 5 mins of the first half we hung in so have some faith.

IMHO, this game is an early must win, if we lose by more than 10 points then we have to realize this year is a complete and total rebuild and this team is not even close to being NCAA or even NIT caliber for that matter.

The loss to a D-II team at Alumni Hall followed up by last nights disaster at MSG reminded me of the glory days of Norm Roberts where routine blow out losses at MSG against the Syracuse, Dukes and UConn's of the world were the norm.

Coach Pitino is way better than that. Let's hope this team finds chemistry and Rick finds a solid rotation that will work the rest of the season.

I'm hoping we look a lot better on Thursday than last night, but its a 1:30 game and 2.5 days isn't a lot of time to get things right with a travel day mixed in.
Shouldn't be huge disappointment if it's a close game; it should be expected to be close. NT is a solid team that won the NIT last year. It lost its best player and coach. Long time asst there took over so the team is playing the same system. They'll be playing good team ball against whatever our guys are able to muster with another two days to practice. Their best player this year is a 6'7" G/F who averaged 7 ppg last year and is averaging 22 so far this year including 7-11 from 3. Their lineup is 6'9", 6'7", 6'4", 6'4", 6'2". Three guys play 35+ min a game, two 6'9" guys split the time in the post and three other guards split the rest of the minutes. They've shot 42.5% from 3 so far this year as a team and they look fit and athletic.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is a pickem. And as a next step in building this group of guys into a basketball team, I think this will be a big win if we can get it. I will not be surprised, however, based on last night, if we're not quite ready for this team.
Fingers crossed. If not we'll move on to Dayton or LSU, learn some more and get better. Need to temper our expectations for a while and take seriously that building a team from scratch really is a process. Enjoy the small steps and signs of progress. Celebrate any victories, and know it will get better. If we finish 4th or 7th this weekend, so be it, the team will have learned a lot, and started building a foundation for BE play.

Remember, when playing mid majors early in the season, just win baby!

It can be ugly as hell I don't care, what matters is not getting a loss on your schedule that will look bad on a resume in March. just find a way to WIN.

Big bounce back opportunity for the team

NT is an experienced, quality team. A loss to them this early by a St John's team just in formation will not look bad to the selection committee in March.

It may be too early to gauge that. A lot of their best players from a year ago are no longer with team. The bottom line is its never good to lose to a mid major team when you're in a Power conference. It will always be used against you in March because their NET will just be lower due to what conference they are in. Unless you lose to an exception to the rule like this years FAU team.

Three of their 5 starters return, plus a rotation guy. They added a transfer from Oklahoma, one from Ole Miss, an 11pt scorer and 40% 3pt shooter (who hit 80 of them) from UTSA, and a Natl JC 1st team All-American, all of whom are in their main rotation. That's their 8 men. FWIW

And it's just not true that it will "always be used against you ..." You don't think the Committee will take into account Pitino's been building this team and if we're on a roll in the Big East they're not going to value that over as loss to No. Tex on Nov 16?

Any way we'll just have to see... I for one am not going crazy if we lose on Thursday, esp if NT looks good. If we then lose to LSU, 2-16 in conference last season and picked last in the SEC this season however, I can't commit to not losing my mind.

I really don't know. I don't know what to make of the committee since they introduced the NET system. I just know North Texas, even if they are a good team and have a solid season, will have a lower NET due to conference affiliation. The good thing is this is a neutral site game. Which would reduce some of the blow of losing. But hopefully we win and this convo is moot.
