Butler, Wed. Feb. 28, 9pm, CBS SN / Radio TBD

Win or lose adults going after kids who are not being paid is wrong. Do I get mad and get frustrated players? Yes, but I keep that to myself because they are kids and it is creepy to go personally after kids when you are an adult.

However, Coaches are getting paid so they are fair game. They have not done the greatest job as our 4-13 Big East record illustrates. I think when we hired Mullin if you thought he would only have 12 regular season Big East victories in his career at end of year 3 everyone would be stunned. Coaches deserve to be criticized they have ultimately not got the job done yet. And as the previous poster said it is New York, if you can't take the heat this place is probably not for you.

And to think we have Simon another two years. Not bad stats tonight - 24 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.
Not if he continues to play like that.
Simon's here for two years if Ponds comes back and dominates the spotlight. If Simon is the man next season, he definitely attracts a lot of scouts' attention.
Except that after four years in college, most kids with pro aspirations are champing at the bit and eager to go to the next level, especially if they're coming off a good year.

I think the biggest news out of this game is that Fun is actually retiring. First Mike Lupica, and now Fun. Or maybe Lupica is still writing and just no one cares anymore.

Yes , there are more than s few Players in the BE who happen to be White and who can play. Jorgensen is one of them and he nearly took over the Game for Butler when they were floundering . Rowsey is another one , Machura , DeVenzenso. Calling him White Trash is low , even for you , Fun . A shooter like him or others are valuable to every team . And , tell me , any Coach in this League would take Players like him or any of the others in a minute . They are firestarters . Mussini was like that , despite those on here who harped on his weaknesses . Anybody who says Mussini would not have been a contributor this year is Nuts ! Shooters like that are not a dime a dozen .And, lastly , players at this level are not Kids ! They are skilled players who are young men . You play at this level , you are suppose to be able to take heat for poor play . This is not CYO or HS basketball . Simon himself criticized his own play in regulation . He knew he turned it over on several key trips . To his Credit , he regrouped and took over the Game . He and Clark won it , with a lot of help from Ahmed , Ali and Owens .
This board hasn't changed in 20 years. Some new posters might have changed but the personalities haven't. People are passionate. Some get carried away and some don't. Generally I try and keep things light but even I get get carried away during a game sometimes. This is New York and definitely not Iowa and you can definitely make a case that this board is much calmer now than the ending of Jarvis and the Norm years

For me at least if I wanted to read a bunch of lala posts I'd go find a good housekeeping message board. But that's just me and seeing a couple of posters go off the rails doesn't bother me too much anymore.

Most people here get angry because they care
Just a couple of points here. It's not going to bother you very much as you are not related to these kids or coaches. We all get pissed and it probably does come from caring, but then maturity should come into play.

As for this board, the mods have done a great job over the years kicking out people. It may be more about what goes on outside of this board that crosses the line of decency. I've read stuff on twitter that comes from pretty demented minds. I can't speak for Beast (he does enought of that for himself), but I think he was referencing more than Message Boards.

By the way, your posts are usually about beer and travelling and you never blast off on anyone.

Stunned? Really, stunned? Some perspective, not exact science for sure, but perspective. For the argument I discount Mullin’s first year as they had to scramble in the spring just to get warm bodies for that year. So in what I consider his first two seasons, Mullin has won 29 games. Jay Wright at Nova won 34, Coach K at Duke 27. Calhoun at Uconn won 29 and went 7-25 in the BE. The only thing I find stunning is the complete lack of understanding many “fans” have of the challenge Mullin and co. took on. Or maybe it is just easier to bitch and moan and criticize.
Full disclosure, I posted before the year began I thought this team would win 20 games and I was wrong. Maybe they would have had LoVett not quit on the team but s##t happens and that is all part of it. So I am disappointed, but no one can deny these kids play hard and have no quit in them and that comes from the coaches on down and is a very solid foundation to build on. Let’s hope that is the case.

FWIW iyeah, I'm stunned and disappointed so far. But wait'll next year!
Well, the fans on here are probably among the most passionate and invested fans the program has. Most fan blogs exhibit these kinds of wild swings of emotion and sentiment. But to say that SJU fans (or those on here) are the worst fans in the country is a little bit of hyperbole. And not quite verifiable. Seriously, though, I think most fan sites are like this one. And, while the swings of wild approval in victory versus the agonies of defeat are certainly evident depending on the outcome, that is not unique here.

Perhaps what is a little unique is that we have fans here who remember the glory days, and want a taste of that again, and are very impassioned about that, and growing weary of the seemingly serial failure of expectation. I think SJU fans (including those of us on here) are good fans, love the program and just want to see sustained success.

A close loss yesterday might have brought some bitter reactions here, but I would bet that many of us would have spoken positively about the effort in the face of the odds without Ponds, etc. Fortunately, that wasn't necessary as these guys worked their tails off to earn a win against an NCAA bound team.

I guess the short version: Lighten up.
When the lead got to five points with 12 seconds left, I said goodbye to the couple who I sit next to and told them I hope to see them next season and my friend walked down to talk to someone and he said he will meet me in the lobby. I stayed in my seat, not because I expected to tie the game but I wanted a minute of calm as I thoroughly enjoyed the game. I didn't feel bad for myself but for the team who played a game no one expected. I am as passionate(crazy) as a fan can get at a game involving a team I love but I am realistic and I think most fans are. Some people say things they shouldn't both on here and at the games but the crowd last night showed how much the fans care. Almost everyone wound up staying on a weeknight to 11:30 to see the end. Lets not get caught up in the negativity but be thankful that we have such a close knit group of fans for a team that has had such little success the last fifteen years.
FWIW iyeah, I'm stunned and disappointed so far. But wait'll next year!
Perhaps you are joking but I would not use the word "stunned". Without much of a bench I was on record as thinking we were capable of an NIT bid. Had we won 2 or 3 games we should have we would be right on track if we had 17 or 18 wins to date.
Then LoVett chose to Leave it and it changed everything. Unfortunately, it also influenced our perception of the staff but only next year will we have a good sense of if they can deliver the players and the wins. 15 wins with the shortest bench in the conference is an accomplishment in and of itself. The team consisted of 3 returning 2nd year players in Ponds, Lovett and Owens and two new players who had a year of rust. They have consistently played hard and, as evidenced by last night, cannot be counted out against any competition. Duke, Villanova and now Butler, all NCAA Tourney teams, learned that. Mullin and St. Jean have worked well holding these kids together. My hope is that Mitch Richmond gets more involved in recruiting where he could be very influential.

And let me say something else because it seems 72 draws the ire of some. I have met Beast and I have no doubt he is huge fan of the program and passionate about the school and team. Meet him and he is truly a great guy. I haven't met 72 but I really dont think his criticisms are because he is Anti Mullin. He might post more negative stuff but I think it's because he cares about his team. We all care in different ways. Some were anti norm some were anti levin some were anti jarvis. I truly dont think there is one person here currently that has an agenda other then wanting to make their opinion heard. Other coaches I didnt think that way

On a different note, I appreciate this quote from Bashir. Admittedly, his play sometimes got under my skin, but overall he has played hard, scored, rebounded, stayed healthy and kept his nose clean. He was a good Johnny.

Senior forward Bashir Ahmed on winning his final regular season game at Carnesecca Arena:

“This feeling is amazing; I am just very happy and very excited to play in front of our family and our St. John’s crowd. I am just real honored to be here. It was a wonderful two years and we went out with a bang.”

He's one of the posters I was referring to a day or two ago in my post on the "Zags" thread.

Thanks Mike. You are correct in that all I care about is the team and the players that wear our uniform. Most coaches are well compensated and own the responsibility for wins and losses. They are big boys and can take the criticism. Sarcastic remarks without emoticons can easily be perceived as negativity but when your program has had more downs than ups in the past quarter century, it gets harder and harder to add that smiley face after every sarcastic remark. :cheer: :) :)
