Butler, Thur. Dec. 29, 7pm, FS1/970AM

Great win, Ponds/Lovett were deadly in crunch time.

Kenpom scratching their collective heads!

A Christmas miracle or signs of thing to come?

I have to admit I thought we'd beat Syracuse because we matched up so well against them. Mullin enacted a game plan with three on the outside two on the foul line, when a player caught it on the foul line the other would duck under the basketball. It was a sound well executed strategy and we won by more than I could imagine.

I thought Butler was a team that we would struggle against. I was incorrect. As a nice bonus, we did it without 12+ threes. We did it with hustle and we did it with defense and we did it with team. Mullin is settling into his lineups. Ponds is a star and DW gave us some really quality minutes.

Being wrong never felt so right! Congratulations guys!

This little note from ESPN...

ESPN Stats and Information
St. John's men's basketball snaps its 16-game losing streak to ranked opponents. It's last win over a ranked team was against Creighton in 2014. Head coach Chris Mullin was 0-10 against ranked teams before tonight

Great win! Pulled it off even with out moose. Will enjoy this for sure. Sat in on a few practices and watched these kids work hard. Glad to see staff and kids effort result in an upset.

Go St Johns!

What a great win. Ponds, what can you say. Outstanding. Butler is good, but lacking a big-time PG. We still have too many empty possessions. Especially tonight at key moments late in the game. But who cares!

Two wins in a row (Syracuse @ Syracuse & Butler) is not luck.

This young team is coming together nicely which is a positive reflection on Coach Mullin and his hard working staff. Yeah, the team is a work in progress and will still likely lose games they should win, but improvement is undeniable.

Mullin and his staff are not as dumb as many of the many grey haired posters on this site believe.

No one thinks they're dumb, just thinks they're not great in game coaches. That's why there's very little in the way of an offensive system besides move the ball a lot. Set high screens and try and drive and dish. But they clearly managed the end game pretty well and they are clearly getting the kids to play hard. I'll give them that.

I'm sure Moose was watching!
Miss him as a moderator. ;)

I think besides elated, most of us are in shock. Never expected a win. The guys made up a 10 point deficit midway through the 2nd half with clutch shooting from the field and line and tough defense. Still, I'm sure I wasn;t the only one expecting it to be just another moral victory. Have to be happy for the players more than anything. They fought for, and deserved, this win.

Great way to start conference play! Knocking off one of the leaders.

I'm not sold that we've permanently turned the corner. But there is progress, and the guys are working hard. It's nice to see life in this team. Things could have easily spiraled out of control after some of the ugly losses we've had.

To me it felt like we were going to keep it close but never be able to get over the hump. Team pulled out a tight one and it was their best players who made the biggest plays. Ponds is incredible. Lovett's step back saved the game.

Never thought we'd have a chance without Ponds and Lovett nailing threes and having great games. Both were front rimming them most of the game. Williams really helped us in the first half and Bashir through the game with about 75% upside including some nice D. When these guys force it is a real momentum killer though.

Unlike earlier in the season we counter punched nicely on 7-0 run and their run in the second. Not sure what it was but seemed like about 10-0.

Would say Mussini might have gotten Wally Pipp'd but that would make Ellison Lou Gehrig.
By the way I think I used this for some one else in last couple years but Malik Ellison's giveth and taketh away thing reminds me of Ray Williams when he was a Knick. Every time you think, hey maybe he can be good, he will do something atrocious. Then when you start to wish a sprained ankle on him he gets a big steal and dunk. BTW who else thought he was going to trip and fall during the breakaway?
