Butler, Thur. Dec. 29, 7pm, FS1/970AM

I can't remember the last time this place has been so giddy after consecutive games. That is what beating Syracuse and 13th ranked Butler will do to even the crustiest of posters.

The folks here deserve a week like this one.

Happy New Year to all of my redmen.com brethren.

We are..

Great win last night, but gotta beat DePaul, and give Creighton a tough competitive battle before i start feeling good. LETS DO IT. GOTTA COME HARD EVERY GAME

Butler team plane loses cabin pressure; coach says 'it was scary, we had guys crying'
11:36 AM ET

The charter flight for the Butler men's basketball team lost cabin pressure Thursday night, and some staff members were so afraid that they texted family members, thinking they might never see them again.

Butler was flying from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Indianapolis after Thursday's 76-73 loss to St. John's. About 25 minutes into the flight, the cabin lights went out, Bulldogs coach Chris Holtmann told ESPN.

"It started to get really cold, and the plane went completely dark," Holtmann told ESPN. "Then all the oxygen masks came flying down, and the flight attendant told everyone to put the masks on. She kept repeating it.

"We had a really rapid descent. In the span of 10 or 12 minutes, we went from 35,000 feet to 10,000 feet."

Holtmann and the team wound up landing in Pittsburgh shortly after midnight and staying at a local hotel. They had planned to take a charter flight Friday, but instead opted to take a bus back to Indianapolis because another plane wouldn't have been available until late Friday afternoon.

Holtmann said he heard players yelling in panic from the back of the plane and that staff members were texting their wives.

"As a coach, you are obviously thinking of your family," Holtmann said. "But you are also thinking about all the young men on the plane.

"I was shook. It was scary, we had guys crying."

Holtmann said they used the oxygen masks for about 15 minutes. He said the pilot told him "that was some of the longest minutes of my life."

The coach said he experienced a severe headache and that players complained of pain in their ears.

The Bulldogs expect to arrive in Indianapolis early Friday evening, and associate athletic director John Dedman thanked people for "the notes and well wishes."

Brian Custer at the end of last night's game said that Butler was the highest rated opponent at 13 SJU beat since 1983 vs Syr at CA. A minor point but wasn't the DePaul team that SJU beat in 1985 at CA a top five team?
A more important point is that SJU rarely plays top rated teams at CA so that statement is pretty meaningless. This year with Butler and Creighton is a rarity.

Exactly the reason I keep hoping Neil DeGrasse Tyson holds a press conference sometime soon to announce that he's invented teleportation.

Scary stuff. Although 10-12 minutes of "rapid" descent? That must have felt like a lifetime. Hope everyone is ok.

Just got home after some post-game celebrating. Great great win, especially on the heals of the Cuse clobbering. CA was rockin! Hard to believe that we pulled this one out. Butler had some chances to put us away, but we didn't let them. Can't say enough about Shamorie. Not only is the kid an incredible talent, but he has ice flowing through his veins. He's completely unflappable. Always fun sitting among the usual cast of character; Paultz, Weatherman, OLV, etc, and nice meeting Johnnyfan and Johnnyfan Jr. after the game. Onward and upward!

One of the best and worst things about the game was that we had to sit in our actual seats.

Wonder what was highest ranked team beaten by SJU at AH? In early 1960s was in house when they beat ND under 10th and I think they beat a St. Joseph's team ranked 5 either the prior or following year

In January 1966, we beat St.Joseph, a Dr. Jack Ramsey coached team with Matt Goukas & Cliff Anderson. They were highly ranked, but the prior year they were ranked #1 at some point in the season. I was lucky as a freshman to see the game. Also around then we beat a Dave Bing led Cuse team at AH, not sure how high they were ranked.

Putting all things in perspective, the Butler team and entourage encountered a severe in air crisis for more than 1/2 hour but survived and came out unscathed, On the way home, their airplane lost cabin pressure and pitched at a sharp angle downwardfor 15.000 feet before leveling out. Oxygen masks were in play and there was a good deal of preparing for a possible crash physically and emotionally. They emergency landed in Pittsburgh and bused back to Indianapolis in early morning. There was lots of praying and crying reported on twitter.
It was a massive win for us and our great joy came that close to being turned around by a massive tragic accident. Aside from being a real bad day for Butler that kind of near tragedy reminds us that there are more important things than wins and losses. I will have prayers of thanks for their survival and quick emotional recovery. What could have been is unthinkable and basketball would not have mattered.

Butler recap:

A fun recap but I think you were too hard on Federico. The poor bambino has a serious infection which he got by sharing his Vespa with his girlfriend. I am concerned that he wasn't wearing his St. John's issued [strike]underwear[/strike] Under Armour polyester warm ups until I noticed he was wearing a Brioni sports jacket while Chris Mullin was in his usual[strike] J. C. Penny [/strike]attire. Those Irish guys are [strike]not[/strike] fashion trailblazers.
The only other criticism is that you went strikeout [strike]bat shit[/strike] crazy. I look [strike]forward[/strike] to your missives for inspiration but that writing technique is better put to use after a loss.

According to College Basketball Reference, DePaul was ranked #3 nationally in the preseason poll that year, but was out of the rankings completely by the time we faced them in mid-February.

Yikes...after the loss last night, Butler had to deal with this:

The "rapid" descent to 10,000 ft. In 10-12 minutes was orchestrated as the piilot (in concert with air traffic control for clearance) brought the plane to an altitude where the oxygen masks were no longer needed, Nonetheless a terrifying experience.

Yes Enright their were plenty of games just as big as the one last night.. It makes it sound like this school hasn't done anything is 30 years. Completely false although to some of our fans it may feel like that.

Lastly, didn't realize Duke joined the conference! Feel better saying this after a win so it's not sour grapes. Know the totals were 23-15 in our favor, but what a poorly officiated game. Butler got a lot of extra on both ends and couple of obvious calls in key spots (travelling, over the back) not whistled. Glad we came away with it because this would have stung extra.

Agree with the rest of your post entirely. On this point, my take is that CM spends a whole lot of every game talking to the refs. Last night he clearly got on the wrong side of at least two of the three refs, and it showed up in the calls and non-calls. There were some make-up calls in there also, but on balance his effort to work the refs backfired last night. Something to watch going forward.

Excellent observation LMF. Monte & I had same feeling. Glad Chris was animated, involved, but there is a law of diminishing returns working refs too frequently and in my judgment too long. Make your point & get back to the kids.
Not a criticism, not nit picking, just an observation. Kudos to Mullin & staff for keeping kids' heads up when it looked

like this one was getting away from them down 10 in second half. Nice win!

A little late with this but Mullin was right and the scorers table was wrong. Is it fairly close by and at the beginning of the second half the ref told Mullin that there was some sort of screw up. Also, when it originally happened the scoreboard changed to 7 fouls on Butler but it must have been too late to shoot FT as play had already begun.

At one point in the first half it looked like him and St Jean were irate that we weren't shooting 1 and 1. But their math was very obviously wrong. Refs and the scorers table had it right.. 6 fouls on Butler at the time.

Not sure if it qualifies as beating the highest ranked team ever on campus but while a student recall beating Tennessee ranked #4 at the time with the Bernie and Ernie Show.

For those fans who chanted "These refs s**k" at the Butler game (I happen to agree, btw) may I suggest that next time there is a need for something like that, something more civil and clever be used. Maybe something like "Three blind mice," or something else. Yes, I know its used regularly between the Yanks and Red Sox. But, after all, there were hundreds of little kids at the game. Plus, we're better than that. (OK, I'm ready for the onslaught.)
