Butler, Thur. Dec. 29, 7pm, FS1/970AM

My son & I met Chrabacz' father before the game at local eatery. He is as big as his son & former Penn State & professional player. He told us from day one he has emphasized to Andrew the value of passing the ball to open men & said his son had great fundamental coaching in prep school. Lastly he felt that his son's point forward style of play was very suited to a team like Butler, where the emphasis is ball movement. It was fun talking to him.

Butlers bad day continued on their flight home. There's a pic on Twitter of the oxygen masks dangling in the plane.

Our plane experienced some cabin pressure issues this evening. We were diverted and have landed safely in Pittsburgh. All is well.

Lastly, didn't realize Duke joined the conference! Feel better saying this after a win so it's not sour grapes. Know the totals were 23-15 in our favor, but what a poorly officiated game. Butler got a lot of extra on both ends and couple of obvious calls in key spots (travelling, over the back) not whistled. Glad we came away with it because this would have stung extra.

Agree with the rest of your post entirely. On this point, my take is that CM spends a whole lot of every game talking to the refs. Last night he clearly got on the wrong side of at least two of the three refs, and it showed up in the calls and non-calls. There were some make-up calls in there also, but on balance his effort to work the refs backfired last night. Something to watch going forward.

Interesting point. Did notice pretty early in the 1st half one of the refs went out of his way to say something to Mullin. Mullin was right, either Ponds or Lovett got bumped, and you could see Mullin saying I was just saying he got bumped, but ref clearly wasn't having it from early stage. I wondered if that was in some part a cumulative effect, as Mullin does seem to work the refs pretty hard most games. Which I would much rather have than not working the refs given how bad some are, but as you suggest have to do so effectively.

Also agree that in fairness we got some key makeup calls down the stretch.

In any event Butler still strikes me as "gritty" type team that gets a lot of calls. Good for them, but annoying!

Excellent observation LMF. Monte & I had same feeling. Glad Chris was animated, involved, but there is a law of diminishing returns working refs too frequently and in my judgment too long. Make your point & get back to the kids. Not a criticism, not nit picking, just an observation. Kudos to Mullin & staff for keeping kids' heads up when it looked like this one was getting away from them down 10 in second half. Nice win!

I really hope we can have an equal turnout for the Creighton game next week.

But I have my doubts. It's a later start time, and there's no giveaway.

Prove me wrong SJU fans !

At one point in the first half it looked like him and St Jean were irate that we weren't shooting 1 and 1. But their math was very obviously wrong. Refs and the scorers table had it right.. 6 fouls on Butler at the time.

And despite the booing at the refs, Ahmed certainly takes too many steps on those drives.

His travelling calls are well deserved.

The offensive foul on Lovett was the worst call of the game in my opinion because it was completely inconsistent with how they called the rest of the game. Butler's pg Lewis used a stiff arm to break our press every trip down the court. Infuriating to see that and then have Lovett get called for a push off on a fadeaway jumper.

I can't remember the last time this place has been so giddy after consecutive games. That is what beating Syracuse and 13th ranked Butler will do to even the crustiest of posters.

The folks here deserve a week like this one.

Happy New Year to all of my redmen.com brethren.

We are..

I yelled at the TV when it happened but on the replay it was pretty obvious.

I'm sure Lovett pushed off. But literally every trip down the court their PG was stiff arming or hooking our defenders with his off hand. It was as if he went to the Ryan Archidacono school of ball-handling.
Refs need to be consistent, that's my biggest gripe.

Hard to tell if it was accurate from where we were seated, but didn't see to much of an argument by Marcus and CM, so I assumed it was the correct call.

Sorry Paul, Father Harrington is no longer the president.

my big brother gave me the same shirt. I wear it to any game I get a chance to see Next game for me will be at the Dunk Can't wait to wear it again Up and down season but I like what I see overall. Tough to take the hard losses but the team and coaches are showing progress which should make any fan happy As fans, patience is the key. Great win!
Check out the shirt someone is wearing, gotta love it.

Yikes...after the loss last night, Butler had to deal with this:

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...pressure-coach-says-was-scary-had-guys-crying

The charter flight for the Butler men's basketball team lost cabin pressure Thursday night, and some staff members were so afraid that they texted family members, thinking they might never see them again.

Butler was flying from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Indianapolis after Thursday's 76-73 loss to St. John's. About 25 minutes into the flight, the cabin lights went out, Bulldogs coach Chris Holtmann told ESPN.

"It started to get really cold, and the plane went completely dark," Holtmann told ESPN. "Then all the oxygen masks came flying down, and the flight attendant told everyone to put the masks on. She kept repeating it.

"We had a really rapid descent. In the span of 10 or 12 minutes, we went from 35,000 feet to 10,000 feet."

Holtmann and the team wound up landing in Pittsburgh shortly after midnight and staying at a local hotel. They had planned to take a charter flight Friday, but instead opted to take a bus back to Indianapolis because another plane wouldn't have been available until late Friday afternoon.

Holtmann said he heard players yelling in panic from the back of the plane and that staff members were texting their wives.

"As a coach, you are obviously thinking of your family," Holtmann said. "But you are also thinking about all the young men on the plane.

"I was shook. It was scary, we had guys crying."

Holtmann said they used the oxygen masks for about 15 minutes. He said the pilot told him "that was some of the longest minutes of my life."

The coach said he experienced a severe headache and that players complained of pain in their ears.

The Bulldogs expect to arrive in Indianapolis early Friday evening, and associate athletic director John Dedman thanked people for "the notes and well wishes."
