Butler Game

Great win fellas ! We're gonna take down nova on sat this team looks ready. I want to thank jerseyshorejohnny for the ticket, great meeting you and simplyred, we were definitely some of the loudest guys there. Always great meeting new alumni. Awesome guys. Love you St. John's !!

Win...move on...hopefully we have 40 minutes for Nova; if we do we can certainly beat them. Don't understand the lack of intensity but great, great job by Lavin and team at to gain focus at halftime.

I know its butler, and a short sample size in general over the last 2-3 weeks, but how could nba scouts not be salivating over sampson.

Sampson is awesome tonight!! He still needs to improve his perimeter game before the pro scouts really start salivating. I don't think Sampson has made a 3pt shot all year. He's a small forward at the next level. He has to be able to hit that outside shot.

Kudos to Jakarr, who looked like a right-handed Walter Berry tonight: unstoppable inside and popping 12-footers with accuracy. Great performance, one that we needed.

Kudos to Jamal Branch -- one of the better PGs we've ever had, and whom we're very lucky to have as our backup (and an ego-less backup, at that) -- and to Sheed, whose aggressiveness changed the game.

And kudos to our staff for getting everything sorted out at halftime. Whatever it was they said, it worked.

Bingo. I was having Berry flashbacks watching Sampson tonight. He really did look like the mirror image of him

2nd half was amazing so all you guys that think we need Harrison to score I present exhibit A. I don't think we've had a better half all year. This team really really can make a big run in the NCAAs as long as they don't send us to Kansas to play the Jayhawks or Gonzaga in Seattle.

IDK. Deangelo probably had 7 points in the second half. Only had 2 in the first, howd that look?

Harrison was on the bench when we pulled away. When he hit that 3 the game was already over. This isn't a knock on him just stating that we have many weapons. He doesn't need to take as many shots as he does.

Fair. Your first post said we didnt need him to score, I can live with 1-2 less shots but I think we need him to be aggressive.

Must have been one heck of a halftime speech! Sampson was a joy to watch, Branch and Jordan were big factors in the 2nd half turnaround. The zone D was effective.
I thought Butler had nice spacing on the floor, and initially made the most of what they had on the court. I'm concerned about our in-bounds plays...it should not have
been that difficult so many times. I also don't understand what the coaching staff expects Max Hooper to do if they don't run any plays for him. I have no problem with
Max being part of the subs, but if they don't run any plays for him, he might as well sit on the bench.

i guess, but the 9pm start was a factor. it won't happen but i would like the seton hall game to remain on campus to spite whitehead

Great 2nd half and thanks to the team fir pulling away so I could leave with 6 or so minutes left in the 2nd half to get home by 12.

1st half as our buddy Ralph was saying had no flow to it whatsoever. Sloppy. Team came out slow and so did the crowd.

2nd half credit to Coach for whatever he said because it was a tale of 2 halves.

Sampson keep it up !!

Sanchez was killing us a little with the Sean Evans dribbling but let me take something positive and I think he had a pretty good amount of rebounds which we are going to really need from him with Chris out. SO keep it up Primo !!

Paultz you were missed in 114. See you saturday

For sure!
@TheBBallDiary: St John's won another one tonight. Hottest team in nation of the past 30 days that's not Syracuse? 9 wins 1 defeat.

@TheBBallDiary: St John's looks like a shoe in for the tournament regardless of Big East tournament if they keep playing this hot.

Hey guys. Been reading along every day and decided to come out of hiding. Huge 2nd half! First 20 had me reaching for pepto but nice to see us attacking rim in 2nd half. As luck would have it, I'm in Philly area this weekend and looking to attend Nova game. I know it belongs in Nova thread, but I'm too pumped up about our metamorphosis into a tourney team to care... Who is going?

can anyone say win out .. win be tourney and go in as 6 seed

If we win out (which would include a win over Nova) I believe we will crack the Top 25. if we then win the BE Tourney I think we would end up ranked around 16-18. We could make it to a 5 seed.

Hard to say that isn't possible given how well the team is playing. However Nova is going to be very tough without Obekpa. Not sure we have enough frontcourt depth to win that game without him. Sanchez will pick up fouls and Gift can't play with Pinkston or Efechu. Sampson will have to be a beast, pick up the guards in the lane when they beat us off the dribble, AND stay out of foul trouble. That's going to be a tall order.

I think we will still be in the tournament if we lose to Nova, win the rest of the regular season games, and win at least one in the BE tourney. We could end up in the 8-9 game or on the wrong side of the 7-10 or 6-11, though. However if we play with the sort of intensity we've been showing, we could make a little noise.

There are still many things about our approach that worry me. We get beat off the dribble by everyone, we cannot stop a back door cut, and our offense is still very rudimentary (nothing at all is run off the ball). I also don't like our first half substitution patterns, or the fact that we routinely seem unprepared and lacking in intensity to start games.. I think that part of the reason we have been a second-half team is that Coach does a much better job of sticking with what's working in the second half.

On the other hand you have to give Coach credit for recruiting an athletic team, keeping the faith that they would gel enough to out-athlete a lot of teams notwithstanding the aforementioned deficiencies, and getting the team to buy into that vision. He certainly predicted this. You also have to give him credit for being able to get them to focus and play with more intensity coming out of the locker room in the second half.

The result is that right now we are on a monster roll, for the second time in Lavin's tenure here. It is starting to look as though this could just be his pattern. Hopefully it will keep going and take us farther than we've been in awhile.

I think Xavier presents problems without Obekpa as well.

A bunch of friends from my section are going. The 114 crew

I think if we beat Nova we should be receiving votes for top 25....19-9, 9-6. 11 outta 12. Crazy. I agree w/ lawman. We are so suspect outta the gates, save for G'town, and Sanchez just worries me to no end. But nice to see Dlo be a non-factor and still have us win going away... Great sign. Just wish we had CO for nova, ah well.

Nova without Obekpa changes things. I thought the game was a lock with him. But with how we are playing anything is possible.

I'll say this. If we win at Nova we aren't losing the rest of the season or the Big East Tournament. If we win on saturday without Chris it would give the kids such an emotional high and so much freaking confidence.

I booked my next vacation the weekend of the 1st ncaa's for the next 2 weeks assuming we wouldn't be in it. Same thing happened Lavins 1st year when I booked Ireland real early not thinking we were going to be making it after that fordham game1

lots of coincidences
