Butler Game

Big thumbs down to FS1 for these 9PM game times.

No way should NY/NJ teams have start times this late.

That being said, good win.

We're going to need much, much, much more out of Gift vs. Nova. Pinkston is a pit bull and without Obekpa out there providing weak side help, we could be in major trouble.

For all of our collective shot blocking prowess, we give up way too many Points In the Paint. Even to teams that have no inside presence.

We'll have a lot of Philly faithful in the house pulling for Sheed and SJU but I hope Sheed doesn't try to press and do too much.

I like the defensive matchup of Sheed on Archi. His length should give him fits. And at least it's not Swiss Cheese Phil out there. The BE refs love Archi so as heed has to be careful.

Nova plays a lot like us.

Here's hoping we can withstand their first punch and keep it close.

What if the NY/NJ or East coast team is playing a Butler, DePaul or Creighton though?

If it's a road game, fine.

Not local games unless it's the BE tourney.

I think when Creighton was home against Nova, they were the early game and SJU had the late game. That makes no sense to me but I'm sure they have $ome rea$on for it.

But its a flip side for the midwest team. Creighton is what 2 hrs behind? So 7pm game here is 5pm game for their fans? We all know its money at the end of the day because there is really no way to keep everyone happy with times.

FS1 wants to show both games on a given night. The only practical times are 7 and 9. Fox gave us more money than we could have imagined getting in the first year of this league, so we have to give in on the start times. Frankly, I wish there was a way to separate the games a bit so we're not missing 10 minutes of the 2nd game when the first age goes long.

Thats a good point, opening night they scheduled the games 2.5 hours apart- and I thought it was a great idea. But now I guess with the mid-week games they try not to schedule them for 9 30. Maybe 630 and 9 would work?

why not 7-9:30 Then people would complain that they have to wake up early
6:30-9pm Then people would complain that they`re just getting out of work

But one of those would make sense for FS1
Or maybe a FS news channel that people won`t pay extra for, then put the 2nd game on there until the first game is over, like espn does with espnnews.

That's what FS2 is for but they were showing some garbage last night that they couldn't break away from. Weve had the same crap happen on ESPN in the past. Many many times Ive sat in front of my TV getting pissed off because we were missing the start of the game on ESPN. Fox Sports does have an app for IPad but it doesn't work with FIOS unfortunately.

Maybe in the future they can avoid scheduling 2 East coast games on the same night. One East coast and one Central game would work. I don't know how difficult that would be.

Funny thing is that Creighton-Nova was the early game and SJU-G'town went after. It should have been the other way around.

EDIT: Nova at Creighton (and G'town-SJU)

Even with a very poor first half did I expect to lose last night. Now had this been earlier in the season is another story.
Harrison kind of played a layback game, even passing inside when he had an open 3. Seemed as confident as I did about winning last night.
I'm sorry to be negative here but Hooper cannot guard anyone, once again allowing his man to drive baseline. Every team over guards him thus he is useless on offense. The same happened to Novak on the Knicks last year. Can Marco be worse on defense?
Good to have Branch back.

Over guarding him makes him quite useful. Have you seen the way defense play dom? its a one man zone in the middle instead of paying him any attention.

exactly. if he can draw the defense just standing there makes him somewhat useful.

Great second half in game that I never thought was in doubt even after a slow first half. Butler likely was the smallest team we faced this year and the rebounding differential was not surprising. Getting 7,000 to attend the game for a 9pm start against a last place team was respectable in NYC. That is equivalent to getting 22,000 at the Dome for BC. Lol.

Or the equivalent of Creighton drawing 50 people for an important game - just saying.

Beast, that would be fantasy! I do not think Creighton would ever draw less than 10,000 and Cuse less than 20,000 . Had our game been at 7pm where it belonged we may have had another 1-2 K for unranked teams playing at MSG. NYC is craving a winner in basketball and if ranked we would be drawing 12K plus against the middle of the league. That DePaul loss was a killer. The game in Philly will be a throw back to the old days of the Big East. Exciting times!

And thats how he gets his assists, by moving it fast to the open man. Must admit, I have been overly stubborn about the guys who bring up the holes in Dom's game. Last night I see him floating around on offense in a way he can't much help the team. On D he's cheating off his man, guessing who's taking the next shot so he can make the flashy block. I would hope he wants to get better, and figure the staff is there for him. Before CO was hurt we needed everyone to bust butt, and now more so. Go Storm.

The app is worthless unless you are away from a tv. I thought maybe they would show the game on the app...they kept saying it was unavailable.

If you haven't noticed, even as fans slowly creep back, is that our long standing fans have been much louder lately. This is really exciting. FWIW, yesterday there were a bunch of club level seats available, and now they are all gone. I hope they are SJU fans making the trip.

"sleeping giant"

In that Kay interview, he talked of building something with stronger roots. No more of this 10 seniors leaving at once thing. And if this team continues to make noise this year and next (if indeed these kids all stay, or only one leaves), St. John's may finally be looking at some sustained success? And for all the talk on this board about him hanging out and not recruiting, it does appear he has a knack if he does pull down some of the names he's targeting this year and next (Adonis? love his NY personality, wouldn't mind snaring him, especially if it drives JTIII nutz)...

whatcha think? "ALL IN" on the chips with Lav and stay behind this team? Sorry, but Masiello is a youtube outburst away from being another Manhattan flake (not like Bobby G of course, that's a special case). I can't wait to go to the Iona game a week from Friday...he is so emotional! Perhaps Orlando Antigua can earn his stripes elsewhere? (though that one poster should be his agent, practically sold me on that idea!)

Loving the vibe of the fan base of late and the board too (this place got so acidic that I didn't post, just felt the pain of that losing streak as many did, just without wanting to reboot everything). I work with high school kids who love basketball, and our team is on their radar. May not seem like much, but it is. I've worked with bronx kids for over ten years, and they all look at me odd when I say I like St. John's. Even the team three years ago didn't buzz with them. Now? They're aware of some of our players and results, and I can actually talk to about half a dozen of them about my team. Similarly, friends are starting to say things like, "I'll see if I can join you for a game at the garden." No one I went to games with in the 90s goes no, NO ONE. This team may change that.

Pulse picking up.

I never heard Masiello speak until seeing some comment by posters on this site and digging around on youtube. The guy is like a ticking time bomb. No thanks. I just assumed he was an eloquent speaker (don't know why), but he talks like the Brooklyn Brawler and he always seems out of it and pissed.

My family has made fun of me for the past few decades when each year I would get my hopes up and tell them that "this is the year I think we're going to be really good"......i got text messages from my 2 brothers this morning....one told me he now has SJU games on a "season pass" on his DVR because the games have been fun to watch.....the other one told me that he wants to jump on the bandwagon....i told him to hurry up, space is filling up fast!!!

this was my 1st day back in office since last week and there was a big st johns buzz today. Everyone wanted to talk about the last 2 games and they all stayed up watching last nights game.

one thing that concerns me is we will loose Branch ,Dlo,Dom and Greene next year. Probably Sheed and possibly Sampson and Co. That means for 15 we might be essentially recruiting a new team. I'd like to get De Larosa and at least another descent recruit, so we don't have mostly freshman for 15.

"because the games have been fun to watch"

that's what the Hardy-led team was like...they got to a point where they were clicking in ways that even a casual fan, or non-SJU fan would want to watch. That dismantling of Duke at the Garden that year? It felt like watching our team play to perfection.

This squad has yet to have that kind of game, but the entertainment factor is high. So much individual dynamic talent that shines even better when they seek each other as they have been of late. That 2nd half was beautiful and cool to know that this team is starting to control the game when it wants to. I actually think next year would be the year where it "clicks," but I totally understand the "fun" factor. Those inside moves by Jakarr? Rysheed's penetration? OBLOCKpa? D'Angelo's cool at the line and snarl on the court? word, this team IS fun to watch!

Understandable. Especially as so often the past twenty years, we appeared to be on that road back to sustainability. I remember things seemed fine when Felipe was on a cover of SI and had two all americans joining him. I remember the Artest/Postell etc. teams that were just damn good. And how it seemed Jarvis would be fine. And then three years ago, we saw a coach deliver, and then three years later, we wondered if that was a fluke. For all we know, it may be.

But all in with chips. If some of those names you mention do go pro too, and Jakarr is starting to gain small buzz in this regard again, as much through his defense, and Rysheed definitely, I think Lavin creates the pipeline where it's just another college losing players as they all do.

Hope it gets to that point. I would love De La Rosa. Be a nice NYC get for starters, get those catholic schools noticing again. Plus, that interview someone linked when he was offered by Lavin, he has a great NYC vibe about him. Maybe a bit too friendly, but if he has game? Loved how he mentioned how he could see himself learning and gaining from Jakarr and Obepka, and recognizing he can fill a scoring void down low. Could be a high court IQ kid in the making?

Lastly, if indeed Lav can help develop a player (to me, jury is still out, but Rysheed learning pick and rolls, Obepka showing more offense, maybe he can??), maybe players like hooper, balamou, and christian jones can become the complimentary players that the ones you mentioned are to go with some of the high level recruits that Lav still seems to have some influence with? Then we could have a sustained program.

But my dude, your fear...

it lurks in us all!

"because the games have been fun to watch"

That's because winning is fun, and losing sucks. Let's be honest - except for the blowout wins and loss, if you shut the scoreboard off, very few fans could tell who won or lost. When we lost a bunch in a row, everyone bashed one player or another, and most of all the coach. Then we started winning, and the Lavin supporters came out of the woodworks, and everyone is showing love for the kids. It's human nature I guess.
