Bracketology

Same here Boo, I`m not buying into the hype BS, let them go on the court and prove that they are a tournament team. Tonight I want to see if we get a nice 12pnts lead in the 2nd half, if we close them out (like a true tournament does would), or ease up and let RU back in the game like Asheville. Now that would be a step toward being a legit tournament team.

Only my wife can call me boo. It's a Happy Endings thing so stop it. I'm only assuming it's me because I'm the charming one posting on this thread and you didn't quote anybody.

Anyway, I agree that right now the dance looks unlikely at best but FWIW remember that there's always teams getting in who aren't really that good. Last year's UConn team for example. Those at larges at 11-13 are usually not really tourney worthy either.

IN THE MIX

St. John's (11-7, 3-3; RPI: 63, SOS: 33)

The Red Storm took out Notre Dame for a much-needed second quality win and then handled DePaul to get back to even in the league. Wednesday night at Rutgers suddenly is an important game for both clubs. The Red Storm host Seton Hall and DePaul after that, so things could look pretty different in the league standings come the end of the month.
GW: at Cincinnati, Notre Dame?
BL: at San Francisco, UNC Asheville

As much as people dislike ESPN, Joe Lunardi is the only Bracketologist worth trusting. Unless maybe if Nate Silver gets in to bracket predicting, but no other guy takes his personal feelings out of it and just tries to replicate the committees process and criteria.

If you look at his Twitter profile he is a fan of a lot of locals. I think he's showing a little bias here.

Postell, would normally agree but Andy Glockner for SI, who I follow on Twitter and is a great CBB follow is not bias. In fact, I was shocked he has us so high considering he is from LI and never talks about us. He is also really good with his bracket projections and takes it very seriously and pride in his accuracy, in fact, on numerous occasions he has pointed out problems with Lunardi's brackets that Lunardi has corrected.

FYI, Lunardi has us #66 on his S-Curve and right now 48 is the last team in. Rutgers is 60, and he is tracking us tonight per his twitter. Makes me believe if we beat Rutgers Lunardi will probably have us in the 50s which means bubble. All this means nothing if we do not win tonight, tonight is MUST win. I know its only January, but imo, we NEED to split with Rutgers, cannot lose to them twice, and we need the Ws to rack up, especially if us and Rutgers end up on the bubble.

We need to win the next three to make "being the last four out" even a dream. No moral victories, actual W's. I think that any team this young should get a bit of grace for the beginning of the season. There were numerous factors on top of just bad play that have played into this season.
1. Lavin is back at the helm. This isn't a bad thing obviously but the game decisions, the play calling etc...can't possibly be the same with Dunlap. The experienced players have had to adjust to this change.
2. Age/xp - enough said
3. Branch coming in in the middle of December changes the dynamics of the team

We have reached far enough into the season and Branch has been here long enough now that they should be able to find enough consistency to ground out RU/SHU/DePaul. If they cannot bring in these three games we are definitely not ready for "being close" to the dance. I personally see some positives in the past couple of games. I think showing that we are versatile and can change up defenses to accomodate situations was nice. The ND switch up was well thought out and if we can adjust in game, not just with pregame thinking, we will become tougher. Branch seems to be a legitimate threat to score and if teams continue to over guard DJ then I can see Branch really burning them. He is a good PG and I think as the team gels with him handling the ball we will see more consistency.

The dance??? out of the question this year unless we really turn the corner on offense (still seems to be a lack of movement IMHO) and CO learns to defend have more situational awareness. Even in our victories over ND and DePaul we were getting burned by people letting themselves get out of place on D. It will be hard enough to properly defend a SU or Duke team but if you are going to give up that many backdoor plays you are never going to win a big game.

I have seen a lot of negative on the boards and understand frustrations but in general I am really enjoying this team (of course I didn't watch the UNC Ashville collapse so I don't have those visions plaguing me either.)

It may be fun, but all of our wins had to be ground out, and we do have a favorable Big East schedule. To actually do these lists correctly, you would essentially have to be watching every single Big East game, and see each Big East team at least a few times live in person.

I would rahter be content to watch them grind through the schedule, and get the most out of these guys possible. Whether that's 7,8,9,10 or more wins, whatever will be will be. They are winning close games and that's all that counts right now, but they are not an upper Big East team until they show a little more against the big boys of the conference.

That's who we are right now. We can hang with most teams and we're prone to let lesser teams hang with us. It is both promising and frustrating at the same time. As a fan, i'm optimistic with our talent level. It'll come together. Getting recognition in these bracketology projections is somewhat re-assuring but shows we have more work to do. I'm trying to have as much fun with it as i can before i pull my hair out with the next inexplicable loss...

Actually, I fear that with the better teams, it will be all about matchups, and if we match up badly will probably take it on the chin.

Obepka may be a great skyjacker, but SHU's big gave him all he could handle, A telanted big front line will give us fits.

Statistically we are also very prone to the three, with opponents making twice as many (about 6.5 per game vs. 3) than us.

My fear is that when we play a very good big team that can shoot from the outside, we won't be able to contain the three or play well down low.

We are getting outrebounded this year by more than 3 per game also.

So, we've played well but really still have to prove ourselves when the schedules gets rough.

I agree. We'll see if we're fool's gold starting this weekend.

No. No. No. We aren't fool's gold now, and won't be that next week. We have a lot of talent, but are incomplete - short of some talented big men, and a 4th guard (unless someone emerges like Marco) or a true backup point. these guys will carry us as far as they can, and any shortfalls will be because we don't have all the pieces yet. We are only a couple of top recruits away from doing serious damage.

Beast
one brother and two dear Brooklyn school yard friends sat courtside for Seton Hall. I observed that probably NO current SJU player would have been successfully recruited by Roberts!
We've come a loooong way and I'm enjoying this thouroughly
what good problems to have:
are we on the bubble?
will our better players remain at school?
when will our worthy bench players (e.g. Jones) get PT? etc.

good times ahead and at hand etc.
all the best

Actually we had atleast a 12pnt lead in every game during this streak. To bad we can`t close these games out. It`s the only reason the games are closer then they should be.
We should get the win tonight then we`ll see where we`re at when we go to G-Town then play @ MSG, before Syracuse and L`Ville.

Full steam ahead fellas, no taking a step back now.

10 games left, and we need to win 6 and I think we will be NCAA bound. It is why every game and win is so important. Gotta win tomorrow. No looking back.
