Big East Expansion

For the record guys, I'd love to be wrong about this. I'd love to hear that adding a team like Dayton or St. Louis would be similar in value to a team like UConn. I just highly doubt that's the case, and haven't seen anything to the contrary.

Which seems more likely:
*Fox adds UConn men's and women's basketball, agrees to renegotiate contract to $7 million per team per year
OR
*Fox adds Dayton basketball, agrees to renegotiate contract to $7 million per team per year

One seems realistic while the other is laughable. If Fox wanted Dayton or St. Louis we would've added them 6 years ago.
The present deal runs through 2025. There is a stipulation that says that if the BE expands for up to 2 teams the $$$ per team per year from Fox will stay the same with Fox increasing the fees proportionately. The present deal is for about $4.2 million per year per team. So based on all that I don't think either of your scenarios is going to happen. Yes UConn is of higher value than Dayton, but is it worth so much to Fox to increase the fees 85%? Probably not., given that there are 6 years left on the deal after this season.
Deals are renegotiated all the time, such as our MSG agreement a few days ago. That deal ran through 2026. The new deal:
1. Added two years
2. Eliminated the 2022 opt out
3. Big East paid more

No difference here. If the Big East asked Fox to add Dayton then they'd do it, since it's in the contract. But the Big East and Fox I think both are trying to get a lot more than just Dayton. They want added value and not just another team.

Also, the secondary package (held by CBS) expires after this season. So, the contract needs to be revisited regardless. I could certainly see Fox giving it to ESPN. That way, ESPN would still keep some UConn basketball and also gain a lot of BE inventory. Would make all parties feel more secure IMO.

The league should make them agree to an iron-clad $500 million or $1 billion exit penalty. Then we'll see how serious Uconn is about wanting to be in the Big East.
If advertisers are interested in UCONN they don't understand demographics. When you sit near a UCONN fan it's obvious they do not have much discretionary income, or indoor plumbing.
Guess you're not sitting near the non-Yalie alums from Greenwich, New Canaan, Darien & Westport ... and there are lots of them ... including Yale alums.

the suggestion by the AAC Commissioner to have member schools sign GORs is interpreted differently than those that believed the suggestion was aimed at preventing Yukon from bolting to a P5 Conference.

The below article that appeared in the Miami Herald suggests that the proposal is intended from having football schools UCF, USF, Memphis, Cincinnati and Houston from bolting. Apparently Yukon does not have the high value which the Yukon posters on The Boneyard believe.

“What that means is preventing schools like the conference’s premier program the past two seasons, UCF, as well as other top football teams in the conference like USF, Memphis, Cincinnati and Houston from bolting for a Power 5 conference once the current media deal runs out, the outlet reported”.

I can't believe the Boneyard posters believe their football program has high value. They are probably referring to their basketball programs which are. If they truly believe that the football team is of high value, then the site's name should be changed to Boneheads!

Why do we need to expand? We have a great league as is - the original Big East was great as well until it started expanding and adding football. Why would we go down this road again.

No to UCONN. They alter the makeup (not a private school, football, not a major media market) and thereby make the league worse and I can't see why SJU SHU or PC would want this. If we expand St. Louis would be adding another major media market to the league.

I've always wanted UCONN back in. They are one of the original nine teams (yes I know Villanova didn't join until 1980 and Pittsburgh until 1982). I'm a traditionalist in that sense.

Boston College, Syracuse and Pitt can continue to rot in the ACC.

So, original 7 schools like cuse and bc can "continue to rot,", while pukon can come back? What's traditionalist about that? Seems like you've set your own guide lines to suit your biased view.

Chill out.

I'd love to have all of the original schools back in the mix, but UCONN is the only possibility while Syracuse, BC and Pitt are not leaving the ACC. That's why I'm in favor of UCONN - because there's actually a chance it can happen. The other schools can rot like I said because there's not chance they're going anywhere.

Personally I root against all the teams that abandoned the BE & do not want any of them back! CT would have left in a heart beat if the ACC wanted them.

You're right. And screw Butler, Xavier, DePaul, Marquette and Creighton. Those scoundrels left their original conferences in a heart beat the first chance they got once the Big Easy came calling. Bunch of sleezy scumbags.

Hopefully you just jest at any similarities. There is a big difference between being part of a conspiracy to destroy your conference and just leaving independently for the betterment of your program. The Big East made Uconn what it became in the basketball world. The Big East, post Gavitt, tried to become something it could never be. ..... a football conference.
Uconn never was and never will be a football school. Prior to inviting Butler, Xavier and Creighton, the Uconn traitors plotted their departure in search of football money. Syracuse and Louisville were great basketball schools before leaving so they owed nothing to the Big East. All the others that left shouldn't have been in the conference from the get go because they were mainly football driven programs.

Inviting UConn would be a big mistake. The reason the Too Big East exploded in the first place is because there were too many schools with differing agendas, as well as a mismatch of resources. For example: there were too many public schools (with taxpayers footing the bill), as well as private schools that had the resources of FBS football. UConn has both - taxpayer resources and football revenue (even though their football sucks).

Now we have nothing but private, basketball-first schools - with similar missions and resources. If we expand, we should expand only within that profile.

And one other thing... I hate UConn. May they enjoy nothing but failure in that second-rate conference...

Chill out? I questioned why you wanted certain schools to "rot". Now you've waffled by saying that they would never leave the acc. You didn't say that in your original post, which sounded like you were in favor of pukon and not other core 7 schools. It would be nice if you were clearer in your first post.B) And by the way, screw pukon.

I agree Mike, It's funny to me how some on here are bending over for uconn.
UConn fans would be laughing so hard. Then if they get back to elite status, like how they were under Calhoun.
You know another conference will want them, and they'll say "adios suckers"
The B.E. would the biggest jokes in college basketball, and they'd deserve it.

I said chill out because of the way you came at me and for some reason felt the need to call my viewpoint "biased".

Let me write this as clearly as I can, so even you can understand the point I am trying to make.

In a perfect world, all of the original Big East schools would be reunited in the conference. As a traditionalist, that would make me very happy. I view UCONN, Pitt, Syracuse and B.C as equals. BUT, the possibility only exists for one of them to re-enter the conference - UCONN. The other three are never leaving the ACC. Since that is the case, I would welcome UCONN with open arms if all parties involved can make it happen. Since the other three schools cannot under any circumstances get back into the Big East, they can, as I said in my original post, rot in the ACC.

I hope this explanation is sufficient.

I am not sure that anyone believes that Yukon should be readmitted to the BE without conditions, one being that it move its FBS football to FCS level being is the level which Nova and G’town compete and with stipulation that if Yukon thereafter moves its football to the FBS level that it shalll face a very stiff fine.

With the aforementioned conditions I would favor admitting Yukon. Without those, or like conditions then I do not favor admitting Yukon.

The reality is that most nationally reported stories indicate that the AAC Commissioner is more concerned with UCF, USF, Cindy, and Memphis bolting than he is with Yukon leaving. Yukon is again becoming the odd duck out.

The reality is also that the decision whether to expand the BE, and which school(s) to take will be made by a network executive or consultant.
