BET Talk

I think it’s total BS that they count these games as home games for us totally unfair. They act like it is such an advantage for us that the tourney is played in MSG meanwhile we haven’t won the BET in 24 years.
The problem is we are not the only school that has the conference tournament on their "home court". It is an NCAA rule that effects us more adversely than other schools who do the same. As usual we get the short end of a NCAA ruling LOL

“Oh, I definitely want to see [Marquette],” Jenkins told Steve Serby of the New York Post. “I have to. I have to. I have to. I have to see them. [Tyler Kolek] made a comment about us after [an 86-75 St. John’s loss Feb. 10]. He said once we went man, we were barbecue chicken. He’s trying to say like we were food, like it was easy for him.”

“I want to beat ‘em,” Jenkins said of No. 3 UConn. “I want to beat ‘em. I want to beat ‘em. They are viewed as the best in college basketball. I’m a very competitive type of guy, and I know I’ve lost … three times now to ‘em. So yeah, I want to beat ‘em. I hope we get to play ‘em again, I want to beat ‘em.”

I think Jenkins wants to beat 'em
I’m glad he’s got that fire, but I got to be honest if an adult called me bbq chicken, I’d be more confused than insulted.

I’m sure Shaka had to have a weird talk to his team because of that. ‘Team I can’t stress this enough, you can’t be calling your opponents food. Just say they were cooked. Wisconsin already gets a bad rap for education we don’t need to add to it. And please if you’re going to call you opponents any kind of consumable please to chose something that could be misconstrued as a slur.’

Also, every school gets an equal allocation of tickets I believe.
Correct, plus the Garden keeps a %, the Conference keeps a %, press and VIPs a %, and so on, so by the time it whittles down to each school it's not that many that each school gets.

It's better than when we were a mega conference, back then, I heard it came down to less than 1,000 for each school.

It wasn't misconstrued as a slur. It was intended as a slur, mimicking something Shaq said a long time ago. Big difference - Shaq was known for saying ridiculous things to begin with, and he had 320 lbs to back it up.

Seriously doubt Kolek can back it up like that, and even as the player he is, will put a target on his back. He's not even a sure fire NBA player no less mouth off like he is a superstar.

Do I have a different definition of what a "slur" is...

It was just trash talk... our defense was sh*t... Kolek called it out... don't think it was anything more than that... Our team SHOULD be embarrassed by that 2nd half effort (in both games lol) - pay him back in the BET

The NBA isn’t really about BB in the sense the game was created . They have a profile of what type of Player they want and they try and duplicate that.

Half the players in the NBA today , I never heard of in College . Now , some of them are European or African who didn’t play College Ball here .
But , a lot of guys who excelled in the BE never even get drafted or , make the rosters .

Kolek has skills that translate to making his teammates better . I’m not sure that’s what the NBA wants these days . Being a lefty helps his play . Regardless of whether he goes left all the time . Lefties can be harder to defend . Not that Defense is practiced in the NBA .

He’s a very good player . Any team having him in their roster would benefit from his play .

Attitude ? Surly . But , if he’s on your team , you overlook it .

No one doubts the skills of NBA players but , it’s a different game than College BB.

I find it , unwatchable . Prefer NHL Hockey .

I stand by slur. Don't confuse with racial or religious slur, and in no way does it rise to that level. All our guys should get fired up by that as much as Pitino’s comments.

Oxford definition:

an insinuation or allegation about someone that is likely to insult them or damage their reputation.
"the comments were a slur on the staff"

It's a slur just the same:

Just punish Marquette when we get the chance after beating UConn in the semis.

He called them soft, the first layup attempt he goes for, they need to foul him real hard and put him on his ass, let him know, not today.

If they even play.

Starting to think SJU getting 6 seed, picking up 20th win vs DePaul, and then playing Marquette with either no Kolek/not 100% Kolek is a good path

Especially cause SJU getting 6 seed would mean Nova won out, which means our sweep looks even better

Honestly, I like the path for SJU whether they are 5 or 6. Just have to win our last two to stay on track

Also possible we draw Marquette in the 4/5 if they lose their last 2 regular season games and SHU beats Villanova

this is so true. I follow College BB pretty closely. I know a lot of college players.

If I turn on a typical NBA game and watch teams not the Knicks or Nets, I am constantly thinking" "I have no idea where most of these guys played in college, or if they even did play college".

Max Struss, okay at DeP very good in NBA, go figure.

I’m sorry, if guys need that kind of nonsense to get fired up, especially at this time of year, they are nowhere. We just disagree again, but Kolek’s comment should hurt because it was true, not because it was a slur. The guy may be a jerk but that doesn’t make him wrong.

We're in a new era where college basketball is becoming a lot less of a feeder to the NBA as it was. Overseas players and G-League Ignite have made a difference. The NBA also prioritizes upside (athleticism and age) over accomplishments in college. Four of the top five picks didn't go to college. It's kind of amazing to see how half of our starting lineup is older than some of the good-to-great young players in the NBA now.

Things have to get fixed but I actually think this is the best of both worlds -- tweener NBA prospects can play four years in college, while the NBA athletic guys (e.g. Scottie Barnes a couple years ago) can be one and done.
