It really depends on what you employ to stop him; if it gives the other players opportunities they would not normally get, making them “better”, what have you accomplished?
Obviously, that is what Pitino and other coaches are paid to figure out and implement but pretty much a good percentage of players at this level are very capable of shining on a given day. For example, Epps averages 18 a game and scored 23, really none down the stretch, yet from a couple of the posts you would think he had an MJ type game. How Pitino chose Luis for that is beyond me, but that is why he is Pitino. But the fact is you have to give up something going in, and adjust as the game unfolds, you can’t game plan thinking you can pitch a shutout.
I watched the GTown game live and then rewatched and without going into specifics, thought Gtown played pretty well, much better than many on the board acknowledged. They have played some good BE teams tough in given games and I thought that the case yesterday. Some talent on the team and motivated on national TV with nothing to lose made it a dangerous game.

Totally agree with all points and would add pressing part of the time vs most of the time. The reason being the press might be more effective if it comes in bunches then backs off. Also by not pressing most of the time it will save lots of dumb ticky tacky fouls that we are prone to. I actually liked the aggressive pressing with our fresh second team.
Not a coach, but seems this team is not a skilled press group. Strategically doing it seems ok, but not on sustained basis. Rick noting they were getting nothing from it & calling it off yesterday was wise.

I think we're in the NCAAs almost regardless of the outcome here, save for a blowout in SH's favor here. May be naive and wishful thinking, I know. But this is a great opportunity to get a resume padding win, get out of the Dayton pod, and get into the main draw of the tourney.

Also, can't help but look ahead to the potential of a raucous crowd at MSG on Friday evening if we can pull this out (also assuming an expected result by that team up north in the noon game, of course).

All it takes for us to not be in, even after being the top of the last four in, is something like:
-- A non-Dayton team winning the Atlantic 10.
-- A non-FAU team winning the AAC
-- A bubble Mountain West team winning
-- Two teams in high-major conferences like Pittsburgh/Kansas State/Wake Forest/Colorado/Texas A&M/Iowa getting hot and picking up multiple Quad 1 wins & making their conference finals.

I think this is the game of the year for us.

A rollercoaster regular season full of highs and lows brought us to where I think most of us thought we'd end up; 5th seed in the BET. Let's take it home on Thursday against the Hall and punch our ticket into a single digit seed in the big tournament!!!!!!! Even better, let's win it all and crack the top 25!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday was a rough one, but RJ saved our butts. What I LOVE most about this team is that the talent is there, and we've got five or six guys that can take over a game and step up to carry the team. It was Joel and DJ in the beginning, GT showed up big during this streak, Dingle has found it in March, and yesterday RJ looked like the guy a lot of us thought he would be when he committed.

I hate going against SHU; party because they seem to be the team this year having the magical season and those teams scare me. But more because I hate losing to them more than any team in this league. I have faith in our guys, but I will lose sleep over this game right up to the final buzzer. This team has the talent to beat anyone in the Big East so let's start by exorcizing the demon that is SHU.

The Hall is a tough opponent for us . They can beat us off the dribble and have repeatedly . Which is why we fouled like there was a bonus for us doing so .
Richmond , Davis , Dawes are tough match ups .

Last night Vs DePaul , they were 12-24 on 3’s . We can’t allow them to score 36 points that way .

And , if we get them down with a lead , can’t let them back into the game . They exposed and embarrassed us last time which prompted the RP press conference .

Pitino will need to devise a defensive strategy to contain them . He had to take the Press off against G’Town as it was ineffective and gave them way too many 3’s.
And , Soriano can’t loaf back on D as he usually does on too many trips.
Dingle and Jenkins can’t get into that ticky tack foul trouble , which they often do when pressing . We need Dingle nailing that mid range jumper and not resting on the bench like against the Hoyas .

It will be a tough game .Holloway never panics and neither does his team .
Maybe RP should use more Zone against them . Cut down on our fouling .

The Pirates have beaten us twice and no lead is safe against them . They will be very confident they can make it 3 in a row .

I agree with those who think Pitino must match or out coach Shaheen this time .
Great analysis!

Glenn Taylor’s butt should only touch the bench if it’s a timeout lol
I'd put Taylor on Richmond and Luis on Davis. Richmond is the facilitator and makes the engine run.

I'd also utilize some zone defense being the Hall are considered a weak 3-point shooting team.

Remember y'all, we were also up 19 on them a couple weeks or so ago. I'm far from fearing this game. I think if we jump out to a big lead again then we'll hold steady.

I think you should give Rick a call lol

He was wide open all night last night. I mean WIDE OPEN.

I am far more concerned with their guards. There is no chance we can stay in front of Dawes and Richmond so we need to forget about pressing and utilize a true zone as much as possible to take away that driving dimension…and we need them to be off from 3. Dawes is twice as fast as our starting backcourt but he can get sloppy.

We have a decisive frontcourt advantage and will need to bury them on the offensive glass.

I don’t like the matchup but it’s super tough to beat a team 3x in a season.

I think we are in the tourney already but need to win this game to get out of that last 4 in play in game crap. I was at the UBS game they should not press seton hall at all every time they did at UBS seton hall got countless uncontested lay ups just play man to man and zone no press. Need to make seton hall a jump shooting team make them earn their points and limit fouling. This is gonna be a war but I think In the end we take this game by 6-8 points.

Have Luis cover Richmond. Taylor cover Davis. If Soriano is not getting back play more of Zuby. That is the formula.

One of the keys to this game will be fouls.

Game 1:
Fouls
23 STJ - 14 SH

Free throws
8-14 STJ
26-32 SH

Game 2:
Fouls
28 STJ - 15 SH

Free throws
10-13 STJ
25-37 SH

WAY TOO MANY FREE POINTS

We're going to have to be able to play defense without fouling them. We need a productive game from Dingle and not have him limited to 15 minutes. We need Taylor to bring the energy he did against Creighton & Butler. We need Luis to play with the focus he did the 2nd half against Georgetown. Jenkins needs to be under control, and he needs to stay in front of his man.

I don't think we've shown anything during this streak to say we've corrected this stuff. But we were ahead by 19 points against SHU for a reason. They are not that better than us. It's a winnable game.

Dawes is Jeklyl and Hyde. A few friends of mine who like the Hall have ranted about him for years, very much a love/hate thing, with more hate. When he's hot, he can make really difficult shots. But he's also prone to sloppiness and playing out of control, as you pointed out, and outright disappearing acts.

Need Ledlum to come up big. He hasn't done much versus Hall, including fouling out of one of the games but that could be due to the ankle injury that looks much better in the last few games as his hops have gotten better.

He makes some really bad decisions and makes things way more difficult than he has to at times. He’s so fast and skilled though.

There’s no way we can stay with him or Richmond so let’s just zone them and make them beat us without their biggest strength. Even Wusu is too strong to contain. You just have to hope he misses or gets called for a charge because he’s going to get there.
