(Baha Mar Hoops) #13 Baylor, Thu., Nov. 21, 7p, CBSSN

I think everyone is overthinking this. I'm looking to throw it at other teams for a few possessions to break up their rhythm. Don't want to run it as a staple defense, but more of a change of pace. Two or three possessions at a time to see if I can steal a possession by them being completely lost. I'd also do the same with a 1-22 or 2-1-2 and a full court 1-2-2 zone press. It's more about keeping the other team off balance.
I agree with the concept of changing up defenses to throw the other team off and a 1-3-1 surprise may catch a team off guard but a well coach, good shooting team will violate that particular D due to its deficiencies almost immediately. In a closely contested game against a quality team can they afford to give up a few open threes?

Matchup predictor gives us a 32.8% chance of winning. About what I thought, maybe a bit better.

On the other side, they like Tennessee, 88.6% over Virginia.

NASSAU, Bahamas (Nov. 20, 2024) –
Ranking inside the Associated Press Top 25 for the second consecutive week, the No. 22/20 St. John’s men’s basketball team (4-0) will embark on its first road trip of the season when it takes on No. 13/14 Baylor (3-1) at the Baha Mar Hoops Championship in Nassau, Bahamas on Thursday.

Tip-off from Baha Mar Convention, Arts & Entertainment Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. CBS Sports Network will carry Thursday’s live telecast from the Bahamas with Chris Sylvester and Kyle Macy on the call and Sam Hyman reporting from the sidelines.

An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brian Mahoney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriuxXM radio channel 380 and via the SiriusXM App.

St. John’s enters Thursday’s matchup fresh off an 85-71 victory over New Mexico on Sunday in its 2024-25 Madison Square Garden debut. Red Storm junior wing RJ Luis Jr. produced a game-high 21 points, 11 boards and seven assists, leading five Johnnies in double figures.

Through four games, Luis leads the team with 17.5 points (7th in BIG EAST) and 7.8 rebounds (6th in the BIG EAST) per game. The two-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection is also third in the conference with 21 made free throws.

The Red Storm earned the No. 22 ranking in the latest Associated Press Poll as released on Monday. St. John’s also received a top 25 ranking for the second straight week for the first time since the 2014-15 season. The Johnnies previously remained inside the nation's top 25 for five consecutive weeks from Dec. 8, 2014 to Jan. 12, 2015. St. John’s also jumped to No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll after checking in at No. 25 last week.

On Thursday versus No. 13/14 Baylor, St. John’s will look to secure its first win in a battle between ranked opponents since taking down then-No. 15 Villanova, 81-68, as the No. 23 team in the country on Feb. 26, 2011. In addition, the Johnnies will try to do the same against a non-conference opponent for the first time since the No. 17 Johnnies took down No. 3 Georgia Tech, 73-72, in overtime on Dec. 5, 1990. Malik Sealy rattled off 28 points on 13-of-18 shooting from the floor to go with 12 rebounds in the winning effort.

The Red Storm makes its first trip to the Bahamas for an in-season tournament since the 2016 Battle 4 Atlantis. The Johnnies will look to avenge its 0-3 showing during that competition after falling to Michigan State, VCU and Old Dominion.

The Johnnies are among the nation’s top 15 with 22.3 fastbreak points (10th) and 6.5 blocks per game (13th). Co-captain Zuby Ejiofor paces the team with 2.5 swats per contest, good for 20th in NCAA Division I.

No. 13/14 Baylor enters the matchup riding a three-game winning streak following a 104-41 blowout victory over Tarleton State on Sunday. The Bears shot 51.3 percent from the floor with Jalen Celestine (20 points) and VJ Edgecombe (17 points) leading the way.

Norchad Omier paces five Bears who are averaging double figures through four contests, with 13.3 points to go with 10.0 rebounds per game. Jayden Nunn (13.0 ppg), Jeremy Roach (12.0 ppg), Edgecombe (11.3 ppg) and Robert O. Wright III (11.0 ppg) round out those posting double-digit scoring averages.

The Red Storm will remain in Nassau, Bahamas for the Continental Baha Mar Hoops Championship to face either No. 11/9 Tennessee or Virginia on Friday.
