There’s a reason so few teams play it
Yes there is….. very vulnerable along the baseline to good athletic bigs which most teams seem to have. Also uses weak side help from a guard out on the wing which usually causes a size mismatch.

Also, forces your big (5) to shoot out to the corner to guard a three point shot which requires a very mobile big. And then after that shot, your big is not around the basket to rebound. I never liked that
1-3-1.

Lots of wrinkles to the traditional 1-3-1. We can have matchup zone principles out of it. We have the length to make it really tough…Luis at the top is no picnic. Scott could get a hand up on his side.

It’s not something you want to sit in for 5 minutes, but it’s tougher to deal with the first few possessions than a 2-3.

Anything where Luis gets to sit up top and disrupt is a weapon.
Sounds good in theory, but RJ would have a minimum of two fouls 43 feet from the basket and I'm not sure ol' tnice's blood pressure can handle that kind of rage at this point.

I think everyone is overthinking this. I'm looking to throw it at other teams for a few possessions to break up their rhythm. Don't want to run it as a staple defense, but more of a change of pace. Two or three possessions at a time to see if I can steal a possession by them being completely lost. I'd also do the same with a 1-22 or 2-1-2 and a full court 1-2-2 zone press. It's more about keeping the other team off balance.

an early achilles in an otherwise strong start defensively is being spread too thin when playing man with our 4 or 5 being burned backdoor compounded by lack of proper or quick enough help rotation. This has led to several easy hoops with long entry passes from top of key into deep paint where opposing big has the step on our guy. Certainly elite teams like Baylor will recognize this on film and look to exploit and while I think 1-3-1 can be effective change of pace occasionally if done correctly I'd also like to see stretches with a more conservative packed in zone when defending in halfcourt, assuming opponent does not have Steph Curry or Chris Mullin on perimeter. Not sure best all around player RJ is top of 1-3-1 as can't afford the ticky tack fouls he will inevitably pick up forcing to bench; I see him gambling on attempts and losing balance and trying to restrain himself falling over back of smaller player with ball and cheap incidental contact being called. Deivon up there seems better fit.

I didn’t realize Baylor got smoked by Gonzaga. 38 point loss.

Watched some Gonzaga last night beat San Diego State. They look really good early. Thank God we are not playing them. 🙃

Players get confused on assignments with a basic two player switch but no chance they would while applying one of 4 or 5 different zones for 10-12 possessions outside of your at least 2 base defenses during the heat of a game. Defenses you very well may not have had time to properly teach,
Personally I am not overthinking at all, just recognizing the potential downside. Coaches have to examine both sides of the coin, the risk vs. reward, you are assuming that approach only bears success. If it is worth it to steal a possession or two, one must also examine the harm in giving away the same.
The reduction in practice time has had an effect on the game, that is just a fact.

Zach:
"Just spoke to Rick Pitino. A few notes.

-- Never thought they were close to getting VJ Edgecombe. Said he's one of the best athletes in the country.

-- Believes this is a game that Jaiden Glover can have a role. "It will be a game for athletes."

-- Everyone is healthy. Expects Vince Iwuchukwu to play after not appearing against New Mexico.

-- Ptiino said Baylor is one of 10-12 teams can make the Final Four.

-- Defending the 3 will be critical. Didn't like their 3-point defense in the win over New Mexico.

-- Pitino and staff graded out win over New Mexico as a B-. Said there was more good than bad for 1st time this year."

was Vince hurt?

Regardless of what Pitino says, I dont see Glover playing one minute in any of the next 3 games unless a blowout happens. That kid isnt ready to play minutes in a big game. Keep the rotation short and lets go 3-0 in the bahamas baby!!!!
Considering Wilcher only played 14 minutes against New Mexico.......

VJ Edgecombe's cousins are here at Baha Mar and were already talking a bit of smack to my buddy who was wearing SJU gear. I imagine there will be a very large Edgecombe contingency given he's from here. Must be great for them.

That being said, I can't wait to see RJ Luis match up with him and lock him down

Dave, any idea what Edgecombe cost Baylor in NIL?
