(Baha Mar Hoops) #13 Baylor, Thu., Nov. 21, 7p, CBSSN

Are we happy if st johns comes out of the Bahama trip 2-1 w/ wins vs VA and GA?

Id be a little disappointed. I want us getting a win against a ranked team on this trip.
Going against the caliber of teams we are playing, I wouldn’t be devastated if we went 2-1. If Baylor was our only loss, it would be understandable. However, beating Baylor and turning around and probably playing and beating Tennessee the next day (a tall task) and making some loud noise early would be awesome.

But Tennessee and Georgia are in the SEC with loads of talent and UVA has always been a top ACC program. There are no gimmies here and all three are probably stronger than New Mexico.

College players shoot too well and difficult to rebound out of. But as a Change of pace it’s still been successful. Mack at Xavier did it well.

Lots of wrinkles to the traditional 1-3-1. We can have matchup zone principles out of it. We have the length to make it really tough…Luis at the top is no picnic. Scott could get a hand up on his side.

It’s not something you want to sit in for 5 minutes, but it’s tougher to deal with the first few possessions than a 2-3.

Anything where Luis gets to sit up top and disrupt is a weapon.

It became very difficult to play an effective 1-3-1 with the advent of the 3 point shot because of the vulnerability to the corner jumper, the highest % of 3 pointers

I am a fan of constantly changing defenses. College kids and especially teams without years of continuity take a couple of possessions to figure things out. Switching defenses allows you to steal a few possessions per game while the other team is lost.

We can win this tournament. Baylor has shown they're not as invincible as projected (not at this point anyway) and we are jelling a lot earlier than last year. As always, I guess it depends on which group of guys shows up.

Conversely, college kids and teams without years of continuity have difficulty mastering multiple defenses and the time spent trying to incorporate teams to play multiple defenses well can be an issue. One of the recent changes that is rarely discussed is the restrictions on formal practice time players and coaches can spend together. So switching defenses can also confuse your own team and give away easy baskets. Things work both ways. But I certainly agree with switching defenses as an effective strategic approach but it is not as realistic to incorporate as it once was.
But that strategy has nothing to do with my post and I stand on what I said about using the 1-3-1, which is why you rarely see it anymore, rarely, not never.

Sorry if this has been posted above or anywhere on the board, but can someone please post a link to tkt info for both the games against Baylor and & Tennessee/Virginia and the game against Georgia on Sunday. I'm thinking of jumping on a plane on Thursday to catch the games. Thank you.
