Bad news- Obekpa leaving SJU

Getting players like LoVett, Williams, & Sima consistent playing time (Mussini & Papa too if they choose SJU). Due to their inexperience, I doubt they win much more than 15 games. .

I don't see how LoVett doesn't get a ton of PT short of being a complete bust.

Or he doesn't qualify.

Could be a lot of different reasons, maybe he saw his role and PT dwindling (perhaps Papa is coming?), maybe RJ leaving was a factor, maybe he just didn't fit into coach Mullin's system. If he in fact is leaving, I don't think it takes anything away from our win column next season. CO has a lot of growing up to do, he could have used another year in college for many reasons.

We are going to see a different brand a caliber of basketball next season. No matter what our W-L is, I'm looking forward to it.

Sorry, but saying that it won't affect our win column is a pipe dream. Optimism is great, but I don't understand those posters who say "addition by subtraction" every time we lose an impact player.
I agree that losing Obekpa & Jordan clearly hurts our chances for a decent next season. Mussini (if he comes) is not in Jordan's class & "weeding" Chris out leaves gaping hole on the interior. That said, I think effecting positive cultural change has its initial bumps, but am extremely confident this hard working, goal directed staff will get us on track for sustainable, high quality success.

Paultzman, I agree with you 100% on the cultural change and the track that Mullin and his staff will put us on etc. But, If we are able to get Mussini and Papagiannis, you still don't think that we can be NCAA bubble team?
Don't think we will get Papagiannis & won't be a bubble team IMO. We'll see. Btw, I will feel a little better when I see Sima & LoVett eligible. Not suggesting they won't make it, but anxiously awaiting confirmation. With them in hand & no big surprises to help address interior void, I still am prepared for a challenging year. To me that is obviously not preferable, but if it is a price to pay to change the culture here I am ok. Just me.
The thought of those 2 not qualifying send shivers down my back. If Sima doesn't qualify who will be next years Center? And if he does he's young and who will back him up? And if you really want to play Devils advocate, Lovett doesn't qualify and Missini doesn't pop for us. Despite this short term drama, agree w Paultz, thinking the long term will be good. But, I think it's going to be harder for Mullin to recruit if we are the doormat of the BE.
Being door mat is certainly not a positive. Let's see what next few months bring however.

NCAA bubble team??? I am hoping we win 10 games to save face.

I would have to agree with Mr Google, that we are not even close to being a bubble team next year. Just this past season, with a veteran team, we were a bubble team with three games remaining, until we beat the Hoyas.

With the departure of Jordan and Obekpa, Coach Mullin has a clean slate to work with and with this in mind, we should give him a couple of years to bring along his type of guys that fits his DNA in order to build a sustainable program. It’s going to get ugly, before it’s pretty for sure. The facts are, Coach hasn’t coached a single game ever, this year’s core group of players will be playing together for the first time ever, and to boot our returning players (Amar, Felix, and Christian) collectively were responsible for the following 2014/2015 key stats, mostly from early season weak competition and/or the seldom blowout: Points – 6%, Assists – 2%, Rebounds – 12%, and Blocks – 3%.

Although wins are important, I see this season as the return of a legend trying to right the ship of a once top basketball program.

I reject your reality and substitute it with my own.

The sad reality is ,if CO doesn't return, we have no returning BE calibre players.Amar may have potential, but watching him last year doesn't make me confident he could step in as a BE starter this year. Talk about rebuilding, Mullin had his work cut out for him.

I look forward to this team "overachieving" based on expectations expressed here. Coach is on the right track. Teach/Coach-Learn-Achieve.

I don't agree with addition by subtraction. Losing Jordan affected our win column. Losing CO is different. SDSU was the the only time all season that I felt his absence made us far less competitive. In so many aspects of the game he is still a liability on the court.

nobody knows what kind of team we will have next year...with or without obekpa......doormat....middle of the road...bubble team.......you can all offer your opinions...doesnt mean it is correct.........lets let them practice....learn a system......and then show us what they can do............jordan is the bigger loss here.....obekpa provided so little offensively hopefully we can get mussini.....hopefully papa is still in play.....that sure would ease the loss of his height......but in all reality aside from some blocks obekpa really was a liability on this team .....and thats when he played....forget how much time he missed the thing i thought last year obekpa provided the most was while he was on the floor he allowed pointer to wreak havoc....thats where he was missed the most last year when he didnt play...but we dont have pointer anymore so thats a mute point anyway

If he is gone, for whatever reason, his or the staff, it stinks coming at this particular time. We now have no Centers on next year's roster (Sima doesn't count as he didn't sign an LOI nor has it been officially announced that he is indeed coming). Papagiannis is not coming and though not a big man, I will include that I doubt Mussini is coming either.

Just an overall bad turn of events as far as next year goes. I knew next year would be tough, just didn't think it would wind up being this tough.

The future is a different story as I believe the foundation is strong with the staff. But next year, its going to be downright ugly.

For short term, however, it is appropriate to ask; who will replace him?

Any 6-8/6-9 immediately eligible transfers out there who can play some defense and rebound?

Refusal to enter a Big East tournament game after it was his own stupid fouls that landed him on the bench to begin with?

Head hunting with a cowardly elbow to the head for an opponent who was simply playing physical (resulting in an ejection and suspension)?

Testing positive for drugs in the advent of an NCAA tournament game? (costing us a shot at a tourney win)

(And those are just the highlights)

Leaving our program one year early? PRICELESS

There have been few if any worse representatives of our school and program. No goodbyes for CO - just get your bags and get out.

I would add the incident very early on--I believe it was Humboldt State--where Obekpa took a shot on our OWN basket to get the rebounding stat--I believe it was so he coujld record a triple double. Even Tarik Turner expressed his dismay about it on TV. It showed an utter lack of sportsmanship.

That said.....I find this development very puzzling. Mullin is already on the record saying that Obekpa was "a joy" in workouts and that the past was the past. And I think his departure will hurt enormously at this juncture.

I'd really like to know the real story here. What possible "demands" could Mullin be putting on him that Obekpa so objected to? Attend class? Attend practices and make an effort? Don't smoke weed during the season?? Something doesn't add up here.

Beast , Sirvoo et sl.
It's the proverbial addition by subtraction! Chris Mullin and staff have experience, moxie, a plan - CO apparently could not handle the "unreasonable" demands:
1.have a good attitude
2.make a good effort
3.allow yourself to grow up

all the best
It's not bad news

Everything at this point is a guess. Why is he leaving? We dion't know. Where is he going? We don't know. IS HE LEAVING? we don't know. Although a poster who has had good info in the past is insisting it is true.
Good or bad for the long term; it is a loss for next season.
We all see "good things ahead". What would a disaster of a season do to future recruiting?
I hope this is untrue and he stays. All the past BS is in the past. The only way this would be acceptable to me is if Mullin determined he was not a fit for the team or his plans going forward, and the fact is we will never hear that put out there as a reason for the departure.

You forgot the ejection in the Fordham game where he pushed a player into their bench.

I hate to be the guy who kicks someone in the rear on their way out but...screw it. In 3 years this kid did not develop a single move offensively other than shooting a baseline fadeaway jumper while uncontested. He has 0 post moves. He tries to block everything and leaves his team exposed on the boards. He's a jerk who has a smug asshole smile on his face EVERYTIME he is called for a foul. Seriously has never fouled anyone in his life in his eyes. The weed thing was not a big deal to me, just about everything else pisses me off about him.

Yet you were more protective of a kid who you never saw play???? All your best wishes to Sampson yet good riddance to CO. At least be consistent

Give it a rest, please. Why would I give Brandon Sampson a hard time? he committed to one coach and had second thoughts...please one more time, give it a rest these two kids are nothing alike
