Bad news- Obekpa leaving SJU

I hate to be the guy who kicks someone in the rear on their way out but...screw it. In 3 years this kid did not develop a single move offensively other than shooting a baseline fadeaway jumper while uncontested. He has 0 post moves. He tries to block everything and leaves his team exposed on the boards. He's a jerk who has a smug asshole smile on his face EVERYTIME he is called for a foul. Seriously has never fouled anyone in his life in his eyes. The weed thing was not a big deal to me, just about everything else pisses me off about him.

Disappointed to lose another contributor who might have helped us be competitive next season, but we all know the real rewards with our new staff are going to be more evident over the longer term.

It might have been nice to get this news before the Delarosas bolted, but whatever. I still think this program will be unrecognizable in three years from the one we've known for the last 15.

Maybe he heard that Big Papa was coming and he didn't want to sit behind him? At least I hope that's what happened. If we get Mussini and Papa this is not that big of a deal in my opinion. If we don't get those guys then losing Obepka and Jordan is not good with regard to next year. I know that we are rebuilding and I have complete faith in this staff but I was still hopping to be competitive next season and even possibly being an NCAA bubble team. Now that only happens if we get Mussini and Papagiannis. Otherwise, it's another lost season of which we have had way too many.

kind of unfair even to the point of ridiculous to put this in the light of the "new coach" don't you think?

You are misunderstanding me. I have nothing against the new coach but wished that drama would end. Always something with our program.

There will always be drama in college hoops. Some kids will struggle to qualify. Some will transfer. Some will get hurt. Some will leave early for the NBA. Many think they belong in the league. Many will make mistakes as we all do.

I agree that our program seems to have more than others but it's probably because we care so much. Stability is not possible 3 months after a coaching change but I'm confident we are heading in the right direction. A big part of it is having a guy at the helm who is one of our own and loves the program as much as we do. Chris will move us in the right direction and limit drama as much as possible. It will take some time though.

From Zach:

Source on Chris Obekpa rumors: He's still in program, in midst of internship at moment. Could that change? Possibly. #sjubbsjubb

The St. John's program is different now. Real accountability and demands. Tough adjustment for some. #sjubbsjubb

For Chris Obekpa to be gone, there would have to meeting or decision between both sides. That hasn't happened. But there are issues. #sjubb

I guess the old saying about not believing the first reports may prove true in this case.

Ask Zach if he knows that Chris received his release letter today. That's a fact.

That's what I was thinking. If it's true it's a welcome change, IMO.

Zach should man up and quote or at least give credit to Redmen.com for the info he gets.
When info hits the wire he will say that the meeting took place. Smart guy. He wrote it well.

regime changes are very tough..Success or failure as you sign suggests may take a lot longer than administration imagined.

How can you have more accountability, when Lavin was dismissing and suspending guys right and left.
Maybe it's the players or the administration which is the only constant.

BTW Obekpa's stiches from getting jumped by De La Rosa brothers has nothing to do with him leaving.

Can you give us a little more on the circumstances?

Transferring? Going Pro? Ineligible? Discipline issue?

Some of you are minimizing what his loss to the team will mean. However will we replace the 3 points a game he scored. Hey, I realize the kid has some talent but like the old saying goes-million dollar body 10 cent head. (For the sensitive types a disclaimer-I am not questioning Mr. O's intelligence).

Even though this goes against what fans want to hear, next year will be a wash regardless of whether Obekpa is here or not. Yes, he was a very good defensive presence for St. John's. But he brought very little to the offensive end of the floor and I doubt that was going to change in one offseason. Plus, I gave up on any hope next season the minute Jordan left the building. He was a much bigger hit from a talent perspective.

Next year is all about laying a foundation for this program. Seeing if Alibegovic can improve on last season. Getting players like LoVett, Williams, & Sima consistent playing time (Mussini & Papa too if they choose SJU). Due to their inexperience, I doubt they win much more than 15 games. But the experience will be invaluable. Meanwhile, let Slice and Matt A. work their magic and build recruiting pipelines around the tristate area.
