Back to the Drawing Board.......

Vaccaro piece. Again the point needs to be made, any coach whose last name was NOT Mullin and had a 4 year mediocre/bad run like he has had at SJU would be firmly on the hot seat. He is being saved by his last name make no mistake about it.

https://nypost.com/2019/03/21/the-doubters-were-right-st-johns-didnt-belong/

And what of Mullin himself? It is all but impossible to imagine St. John’s even considering turning up the griddle under his coaching seat, even if this team didn’t meet anyone’s expectations. Still, any other coach with any other name would absolutely see the pressure on him ratcheted up after this team flamed out as it did, with a new athletic director on board. And you also wonder how many years of fight Mullin has left in him.

Perhaps Mack and Steere will be our Rogane. I know, I’m dreaming...
Seriously, I’m as emotionally invested as anyone. I’m an 85 grad...so I go back to the “glory days”. Just a hunch, but I think all 3 are coming back. (Simon, Figgy and Heron). Add Williams to the mix, a more seasoned (and slightly bigger) Roberts...and you have something. This is definitely not like the year one of the Mullin regime team from a talent standpoint.
One thing...we need a year or two without player defections. It’s very difficult to establish a winning culture when the cast of characters is constantly in flux.

One thing I can guarantee you is that if Dr. Gempeshaw did not like the direction of this program, Mullin would not be here. On that subject, Dr. Gempeshaw, who was present last night at the game with his wife, knows and loves basketball unlike his predecessor at SJU, and he also knows the big picture of the importance of a successful program and branding. He goes to far more games than those on here who are local and boast of their interest in the team, was a bsketball ref, and probably more than anyone I know can cite statistics about our team and discuss areas of improvement.

Those of you who think somehow their intellect about the game and desire for wins trumps those who remember Mullin as a player are wildly narcicisstic and have falsely inflated egos that it's silly to rebut. Everyone wants to win. Everyone is aware that Mullin Mullin is not the greatest in game strategist to prowl the sidelines, but smart money points to this year's late collapse as more roster based than strategy.

So let's make a few things clear:

Rice isn't coming here any time soon, and it never was happening.

Naclerio advocating for Hurley is likely Naclerio advocating for Naclerio (on Hurley's staff should that happen).

Our biggest need is better recruiting and more of it.

Reminder that every other Big East NCAA tourney entrant would likely have jump on the opportunity to get Ponds, Clark, Heron, Simon, and Figueroa insofar as their talent. The rest? I don't see any of those programs salivating at any of them.

How's this for a novel idea. Replace Mitch Richmond with Tom Pecora, who absolutely loves this program, knows every hs coach in the area, and would be a very nice addition as a bench coach without ruffling feathers. Forget about his record as a head coach - he knows the college game, and so highly regarded that when Baker Dunleavy took the Quinnipiac job, Jay Wright advocated to Baker to hire Pecora, and asked PEcora to go there to help out Dunleavy in his first HC job. Then you go out and get a second recruiter.

Going back to the drawing board is wishful thinking for those who think that firing Mullin would be a step forward.

I agree I think Gempshaw does want a big time program, I think he maybe jumped the gun 4 years ago with his focus on Mullin instead of a wider search. I think he loved the storyline and should have thought long and hard about the long term.

Personally don't want Bobby Hurley and don't care that Mike Rice isn't coming.

But I stand by what Vaccaro said and believe Mullin's name is saving him to a certain degree.

As you know I have been harping on the recruiting being poor for so long now I have the grey hairs to prove it. I absolutely ridicule the people who defended the "Transfer U." As for those 5 players I would say Simon and Clark would be good bench players on a top BE team. Heron, Ponds and LJ are legit starters, everyone else is...well you said it.

As for Tommy not sure he is the answer but there will be options if Chris comes back. My fear is outside of Matt he will bring everyone back and recruiting will be worse.

And I disagree with the idea that blowing it up would automatically be a step back. You don't keep a bad coach because you are worried you may have to rebuild. Shit happens. The key is finding the right coach.

But other things have changed since then
Nova has become a national power
And so has Marquette
SH has shown they can produce a competitive team every year
G'Town has already surpassed us in their comeback.
In down years Xavier, Butler, and Creighton have shown they can compete.

And so this team looks like it will take a step back while everyone else is moving ahead.
Providence has shown they can recruit well enough to clean our clock

Stating the obvious, but next year could get really ugly. Since it appears Mullin won't be stepping down, hopefully he realizes that we need some new assistants.

Yesterday's game was a complete embarrassment. I'm not saying that's 100% on Mullin, but we should have never been in the play in game to begin with. Fact is we finished 1-5, and now it's looking like Matt is leaving and our top 2020 recruit won't be coming.

Changes are absolutely necessary and I hope Cragg mandates them.

Does Vaccaro mention that any other coach would not be exposed to pro-team pressure like Mullin? And Mullin has improved every year. 21 wins. An NCAA berth.

Vaccaro, Brazziller and Rubin are simply taking advantage of a chronically suicidal fanbase and saying what you all want to hear.

ALL big city college teams have fallen to mediocrity since the 90's. UCLA, Temple, DePaul, Saint Joe's - big city teams with track records that can't compete for recruits with "small town" teams.

That's a story which would take effort in writing, so we don't see it. There are reasons for that, only a few of which are visible. College recruiting is a cesspool and SJU is not a pay-for-play type of establishment. I doubt Zion has ever transferred from the E/F at 169th street and hopped on the Q31 to get to class. Our players often do, and it's just a matter of time before they will wonder "when do I get paid". Jamaica is not the splendor of Chapel Hill.

The reasons why small town teams have beat us since the 90's:

1. Beautiful campus
2. Insulation from aggressive, "professional-team", corporate media, (like Vaccaro)
3. Low population density
4. Fan base that is youthful and travels well
5. still get to travel to MSG and Barclays for OOC exposure games
6. Protection from outside influencers
7. Housing

I wish people like Vaccaro and Braziller would hold the entire College BBall plantation accountable, rather than just a small segment of non-corporate Catholic schools in Queens. The St. Johns failures are shared by all other big city college teams. Report that, Mike.

I expect CM to return and I support that but the Staff must be re-aligned.
'That' is an absolutely essential element for any legitimate hopes for a competitive season in 2019-20 imo.
The Staff's current structure is untenable and Chris's 'pro'-system does not work with the talent level of players that we have and would not be effective with the talent level that most college teams have.
Let's hope for prudent and wise internal changes be implemented after the college season is over with Chris at the helm.
On to next year.

Come one with this nonsense. Improved every year?

Stop. Improved on himself, unfortunately that is a low standard.

He is 20-52 in League play. That is beyond horrible. He is 19-35 even if you remove the 1st year. That is terrible. 12 of his 21 wins this year were in a very soft non-conference. They played 2 non-conference teams that ended up in the NCAA/NIT. Duke and VCU. They lost by 30 to Duke and beat VCU by 1 in OT in Brooklyn. Everything else was a better shade of garbage.

And going from 7 league wins in year 2 to 4 league wins in year 3 is not improvement even by your standard. So how do you explain that.

4 years and had to play on the Wednesday of BE Tourney week all 4 times. Last 3 BE Tourney losses by a combined 101 points. Say that with me, lost 3 combined league games by 101 points....

You call that improving,,,sorry that is a crock.

All your doing is avoiding the larger point I was trying to make. Anyone can cherry pick stats from wiki or espn.

Heres a few: 21 wins, ncaa berth, all big east first team player, big east defensive player of the year...

What giant leap backwards.

Whatever. All you guys want to do is depose a coach every 4 years. That's your goal now. It isn't even really to win, it's all about deposing a coach. As if we aren't up against a corporate juggernaut of ESPN-ACC-Disney and trying to eek out a presence on a drastically changed landscape.

You all need to realize that what we have achieved is remarkable under the current altered conditions in College BB.

Here's my question. Let's say SJU decides to keep Mullin and the following things occur (all likely):
1. Ponds leaves
2. Heron leaves
3. Tabor decommits
4. Matt A takes ass't job with Nebraska

Let's be perfectly honest with ourselves. SJU will be a bottom feeder in the Big East next year if that were to occur. Now, Mullin is entering the last year of his 6 year contract. They have to either extend him or fire him. My point is, if we are fully expecting them to take another step back next year, then why even keep him for 2019-'20. You are just delaying the inevitable for a year.

If you don’t think his 2 year 2 million dollar contract isn’t the the elephant in the room you’re kidding yourself. My 35 years of being a SJU fan and 19 years of mismanagement and mediocrity tell me it will be status quo next year. It’s always comes down to the money at St. John’s .

I don't want ever 4-5 years. But I also want to dance more than once or twice every 4-5 years. If Lavin made the tournament Harrison's JR year they never would have parted ways. 3 out of 5 is a lot better sounding than 2 out of 5.

Maybe if I'm bored later tonight I'll dig and see but coaches move so frequently now on their own especially that they don't last long if they don't perform.

My standard is not improving on yourself but improving on the previous coach. Lavin did all that and much more and he was mediocre.

Your standard is the fact that Mullin improved on himself. That is not my standard. You don't hire a coach that way.

If you know anything, you'd know that Repole is not a major benefactor. Your impressions of the school are pretty outdated. The campus has been beautified with many new buildings, student fieldhouse, chapel, fountains, and a beautiful remake of the Business school. The school went deep for Lavin and Mullin in terms of money, and the ROI has not been what's expected. There are upgrades in a ton of areas, and if you think this is the same old St. John's you are mistaken. Money is still carefully spent, mostly due to the fact that alumni mostly think giving is someone else's job while still having plenty to say about the school being backwards. Our BOT are among the most successful people in NYC metro and give their time and treasure to the school. As you probably are aware, throwing money at anything, including a basketball program isn't a sure fire way to make it successful.
