Vaccaro piece. Again the point needs to be made, any coach whose last name was NOT Mullin and had a 4 year mediocre/bad run like he has had at SJU would be firmly on the hot seat. He is being saved by his last name make no mistake about it.

And what of Mullin himself? It is all but impossible to imagine St. John’s even considering turning up the griddle under his coaching seat, even if this team didn’t meet anyone’s expectations. Still, any other coach with any other name would absolutely see the pressure on him ratcheted up after this team flamed out as it did, with a new athletic director on board. And you also wonder how many years of fight Mullin has left in him.
One thing I can guarantee you is that if Dr. Gempeshaw did not like the direction of this program, Mullin would not be here. On that subject, Dr. Gempeshaw, who was present last night at the game with his wife, knows and loves basketball unlike his predecessor at SJU, and he also knows the big picture of the importance of a successful program and branding. He goes to far more games than those on here who are local and boast of their interest in the team, was a bsketball ref, and probably more than anyone I know can cite statistics about our team and discuss areas of improvement.
Those of you who think somehow their intellect about the game and desire for wins trumps those who remember Mullin as a player are wildly narcicisstic and have falsely inflated egos that it's silly to rebut. Everyone wants to win. Everyone is aware that Mullin Mullin is not the greatest in game strategist to prowl the sidelines, but smart money points to this year's late collapse as more roster based than strategy.
So let's make a few things clear:
Rice isn't coming here any time soon, and it never was happening.
Naclerio advocating for Hurley is likely Naclerio advocating for Naclerio (on Hurley's staff should that happen).
Our biggest need is better recruiting and more of it.
Reminder that every other Big East NCAA tourney entrant would likely have jump on the opportunity to get Ponds, Clark, Heron, Simon, and Figueroa insofar as their talent. The rest? I don't see any of those programs salivating at any of them.
How's this for a novel idea. Replace Mitch Richmond with Tom Pecora, who absolutely loves this program, knows every hs coach in the area, and would be a very nice addition as a bench coach without ruffling feathers. Forget about his record as a head coach - he knows the college game, and so highly regarded that when Baker Dunleavy took the Quinnipiac job, Jay Wright advocated to Baker to hire Pecora, and asked PEcora to go there to help out Dunleavy in his first HC job. Then you go out and get a second recruiter.
Going back to the drawing board is wishful thinking for those who think that firing Mullin would be a step forward.
I agree I think Gempshaw does want a big time program, I think he maybe jumped the gun 4 years ago with his focus on Mullin instead of a wider search. I think he loved the storyline and should have thought long and hard about the long term.
Personally don't want Bobby Hurley and don't care that Mike Rice isn't coming.
But I stand by what Vaccaro said and believe Mullin's name is saving him to a certain degree.
As you know I have been harping on the recruiting being poor for so long now I have the grey hairs to prove it. I absolutely ridicule the people who defended the "Transfer U." As for those 5 players I would say Simon and Clark would be good bench players on a top BE team. Heron, Ponds and LJ are legit starters, everyone else is...well you said it.
As for Tommy not sure he is the answer but there will be options if Chris comes back. My fear is outside of Matt he will bring everyone back and recruiting will be worse.
And I disagree with the idea that blowing it up would automatically be a step back. You don't keep a bad coach because you are worried you may have to rebuild. Shit happens. The key is finding the right coach.
