Attendance

how many more wins? why do we have to keep moving the goal posts? when is it enough? it's always excuses with this awful fan base - the fact that there will be less in the building on Weds night at this point in the season than on a Monday night for game 2 against Michigan is incredibly disappointing and the fan base should be mocked endlessly
I don't think beating an unranked Villanova team on the road is the game that will get people who stopped paying close attention to the program to pay $75 for a Wednesday night game against an unranked Providence.

This is what I'm talking about with moving the goal posts - so 6:30 is a tough ask for everyone not in the city...8:30 is a tough ask on a week day? Sooo then what isn't a tough ask? Every game can't be at noon on a Saturday. Why do other fan bases show up at 6:30 or 8:30? Why is it such an issue with St. John's? Again - the fact is nothing is ever good enough. Timing, pricing, location, seat size, temperature, on and on and on...when is enough enough? How do you expect to build a winning culture - which the fans have to be a part of - if this is how things are gonna always be?
7PM isn't a tough ask.

That wasn't a personal attack on you, clearly I was talking in general about your points pertaining to the fan base. You can keep your personal insults to yourself and save it for people that deserve it.

Go back and reread your post, not sure how you can say that couldn't be interpreted as directed at me given I gave an "excuse". These aren't "excuses" for everyone, they're reality for many people.

Again this stuff is grinding my gears with the excuses and reasons not to show up. For the casual fan that watches on the surface, and sees it on the bottom ticker or sportscenter and isn't a die hard like many on here - how is 11-4, first place in the big east, Rick Pitino and MSG not good enough to get your ass up and go to a game?

I'm so sick and tired of this crap. Everyone begged for Rick Pitino you got it. Everyone begged for the team to start winning. 3 game winning streak and 5-1 in the last 6. Winnable game. SHOW THE F UP
Please take this with a grain of salt but you know what grinds my gear? People with the arrogance to tell other people how to live their lives. I have a particular poster on “ignore”, not because I don’t find many of his posts informative and entertaining, I do; but because he has the same belief that he can “bully” or “shame” or “ridicule” people into how to spend their time or their money.
I am a diehard Johnnies fan who DOES NOT attend games, which is my prerogative, just like it is yours to attend. My last word on the subject, but enjoy SJU in your way but respect other people who choose to do it differently than you.

Pitino's first game at MSG as our coach was a major event. It was all over the media, there was huge anticipation, there were pyrotechnics at the game itself, etc. You cannot compare that to playing unranked Providence at this point in the season.

You have to look at the context and history of this program. Lavin's first year, an exciting time, we played #11 ranked Georgetown at MSG on a Monday night at 7pm. 8,900 people showed up.

I love Pitino, but he is not going to change this overnight.

If our OOC season unfolded with beating Michigan, beating Dayton but losing to Houston, beating Boston College, and the BE the way it was, I think we'd see a lot more hype this year.

I'm not saying this is how it should be. But the brand of St. John's basketball is of a program that consistently underachieves and disappoints, and unfortunately, played right into that narrative in November (which if you're a diehard fan like us, was absolutely understandable).

Sure, but they aren't Jay Wright's Villanova team anymore. We've talked ourselves on this board how they aren't. I'd be curious to know what the TV ratings were for last week.
I totally agree Villanova isn't Wright's group, but their name is still well-known and respected nationally. I know they've hit a rough patch at this juncture of the season, but it wouldn't surprise me to see 'em get their crap in order.

Oh please, if you're offended by die hard fans (along with your hall-of-fame coach) being pissed off that their fellow fans aren't coming to games you need a reality check. RIck Pitino has called out the awful attendance by the fans for the Boston College game at Barclays and UBS arena for Hofstra. The coach knows the kids need the crowd - so yes it is your choice to do whatever you please - but don't act like it is cool for the garden to be empty for this group.

No one is telling you how to live your life, being a fan means supporting the team, part of that is showing up and helping be the difference.

Sure there are many different ways to be a fan, but the point of this all is - this team has been GARBAGE for 20 years. Fans have been patient, now you finally are developing a winner, with a hall of fame coach, and it's still not enough to get 15k at MSG?

How are you or anyone interpreting anything I'm saying as not ultimately that is someone that is intentionally looking to be offended.

Hey, I'm one of Kyle Neptune's defenders on this board. They also didn't have Moore, who is key for them. I just don't think that win resonated with the casuals we want to show up on Wednesday. It definitely resonated with national writers.

Actually, it did resonated with casuals as a couple of casual fans (non-Johnnies fans) "congratulated" me on the Johnnies' win versus Villanova.

"Name" wins usually resonate with the casuals. Well-versed, die hards, and fans who keep up with the game know better so to speak.

So the team winning 3 in a row, 5-1 in their last 6, just doing something they haven't since 1993 on Saturday none of that is good enough?

Hey man. I understand being frustrated about attendance and stuff, but this fan base is not awful

Also the reality of the situation is we play in NYC. It’s not the easiest place to get around. When I was a student at St. John’s I went to pretty much every home game, after college I lived in Brooklyn for awhile and i went to significantly less games. Life gets in the way a lot post college (at least that’s my experience)

I wanted to play Providence game on campus until I realized students aren’t back from break yet. Cause my experience as a student is that the on campus housing community did a great job supporting the team at games.

But when the games at MSG, those students then have to get on a bus, get to the F train, go to MSG, and then come back late (the 169th street station isn’t very fun late at night I’m sorry, they wouldn’t get back too late from a 6:30 game but I’m just saying)

It’s suddenly a much different ask.

I get the frustration and where you’re coming from but its also one of those things where even if excuses bother you, they are valid excuses a lot of the time and it makes sense why the numbers aren’t where we’d like them to be

re: Attendance... think we are speaking in a vacuum here. At of those of us on here that could* attend a game- i would say the overwhelming majority will go in person. It's the 12-15,000 people Not* on here that We need to Go lol...

With Rick's hire, we saw the immediate results in Season ticket sales. At CA- the third tier has been pretty packed each game- which is a vast improvement there.

To Pack MSG however... going to need more Headlines / Consistent Wins / a number by our name probably... That will take time.

I still think all this talk about complaining about what the attendance will be is a bit premature just like it was vs michigan.
I agree. We just gotta settle down and let this team continue to turn heads. The social media era we live in is crazy, all it takes is one moment, one highlight, one win that catches on online, and suddenly we’re a hot ticket.

With pitino this thing could pop off at any moment. Honestly I’m not worried about the attendance aspect of it, I know how badly we all want to continue to see this program rise.

But my mentality right now is keep winning and keep inching closer to solidifying ourselves as a tournament team. We have Pitino now… if we get into the bracket who knows what could happen

We’re gonna have the better coach and better big man in any March Madness game we find ourselves in. Sign me up!
