Attendance

I don’t buy tix in advance. Wait until 15 min before game time. Prices are slashed. No seller wants to get stuck with unsold tix. You can download purchased tix in MSG lobby. Just be patient.
have you tried that for Knicks or rangers and if so how low have you gotten ?

Better people to answer marketing question would be redmen4life and moose who understand sports marketing.

We outsource most marketing to a big name in sports marketing. There appears to be a ton on ads and ton of social media posts, etc, pitino is all over the pace on wfan and other outlets. He even sits in on marketing meetings. Gigantic effort on his part and its technically not his job.

There have been a number of great promotions but again im not qualified to know what is being spent and how. It does appear to be considerable.
I can tell you that during Mullin (coaching) era, I spoke to student section leaders at Michigan St, Florida, etc. and one huge thing I came away with was how much $ they spend just to get students to games. Forget amount but it was a big budget. We were nowhere near their investment.

Teams win & teams lose. What doesn’t change is human nature. This stuff isn’t that difficult, it just takes major effort & $. I have sat down with some higher ups with power points, stats, other student section budgets, etc. I recommended having 4-5 student ambassadors walk around CA or maybe 8-10 at MSG and give them free chikfila coupons, $50+ off at campus store, personalized jerseys, $50+ off Acquistas, etc. You give these rewards out to the loudest students with the most energy & creativity each game. They go back & tell their friends. They said thnx but didn’t use any recommendations.

Now as for attendance for casuals, yes we’re going to have to be ranked or regularly beat ranked teams to get them. And at least make NCAAT most yrs. Remember, we lost an entire generation. I’m 34 & when I bring up SJ all I hear is “Oh yeah the 80’s! Mullin!”.

Last year, after we won @Uconn - felt like the school did a lot of Marketing for the Nova home game that followed. Take over Penn Station or something like that... Think we'd see the same today and tomorrow for the game Wed.

I was there in the 200s and the place felt packed. ...was such a let down performance

During the late 80's & 90's into the 00's as a way to market my newly formed firm and a a way to network, I once had 10, then 8, then 6, then 4 season ticket packages just for the MSG games. A lot of the group I was aiming at was from NJ so the campus games were out.

10 TICKETS! Ouch, it cost a lot of money (back then) and we would do dinner out beforehand, so even more $$$. Did it help business?, not so much but when we were good, I had so many guys rooting for the Johnnies I didn't really care. We had a blast. When the Garden was pulsing and the Johnnies were winning it was a great time.

When we sucked and I was down to 6 then 4 tickets and I could beg and couldn't get people to come. I surrendered the package in 2010 at the end of the Norm era. I should have gotten rid of them at the beginning of the Norm era. Funny thing is I began by buying my season tickets in the late 80's direct from the Garden and was treated very nicely by them. Eventually, I decided to switch to buying the package through the school and even joined the Red White Club but wasn't treated as well as the Garden treated me. 10 Season tickets (even the half package) brings in a lot of money.

The Highs were high, but the LOWS WERE VERY LOW. Sometimes I felt like it was just a crowd of me and Norm's friends and family. It was as quiet as a morgue.

Moral of the story: When we get to sustained excellence, we will get the casual college BB fan.

NYC is hungry for really good college BB but they haven't had that for a long time.

I'm banking on the same size crowd as the Michigan game, at that game we had a good crowd, but the team wasn't, this time it will be different.

114 will lead us on to victory. MJMJr will pull his shirt off, circle it over his head and whoop up the crowd off like in the 80's when we had Fanboy ( up in the stands) and Flag Boy (circling the Court) to get the crowd into it!!! {Those were days, my friend, I thought they'd never end}.

Just a note on the sparse attendance during those very down Norm years. I joke around with friends that, back then, it felt like that scene in the movie "Major League," when those 4 diehard Indians fans are sitting in the sparsely seated outfield seats and one prematurely reacts to a fly ball hit by the Yankees by saying it was "too high" (only to then see it land high in the centerfield seats). At the end of the game, when the Indians play the Yankees for the pennant, the "Jake" is sold out, with a loud and raucous crowd!

After so many lean years, I've wondered whether I'll be resentful when the bandwagon climbs aboard (and it drives up ticket prices), but I think it will be the opposite. I will be so happy and excited about all of NYC (and LI, NJ and even southern Ct) supporting the Johnnies, that I will embrace that electricity -- and even a (hopefully slight) surge in ticket prices.

6:30 starts are great for anyone who works in Manhattan, for students or for retirees who don't want to get home too late. Probably not good for those who don't fall in any of those categories but agree that anything less than 10K would be a really big disappointment.
what's the excuse for not showing up to 7pm or 8:30pm games? It's always something with this fan base - always an excuse

Most of the best attended college basketball venues are in places like Omaha, Syracuse, Lexington, Louisville, Lawrence, Arkansas, Dayton, Lincoln, etc. Not big cities like New York or Washington DC (Georgetown attendance has been horrendous for years- including this year). That's because cities like Lexington and Syracuse don't have a fraction of the competition that NYC has, especially within the sports world where the college programs are basically the only option. Plus most of those programs have made deep Tournament runs recently, not zero wins in decades.

I fully agree attendance for Wednesday should be above 10K (as I said- 13-14K would be solid), and hopefully we at least approach those numbers once the tickets are counted, but the vast majority of New Yorkers and even St. John's fans don't follow this stuff like we do. Yes, beating Nova and soaring in the NET rankings will be huge come March, but Nova isn't ranked and the casual fan doesn't know what NET is.

Just a couple weeks ago our resume was pretty mediocre, and it's only the past day where it started becoming solid. Let's wait until the team becomes relevant nationally first and see how much attendance picks up. I have a feeling it'll keep going up and up if we continue winning.
Again this stuff is grinding my gears with the excuses and reasons not to show up. For the casual fan that watches on the surface, and sees it on the bottom ticker or sportscenter and isn't a die hard like many on here - how is 11-4, first place in the big east, Rick Pitino and MSG not good enough to get your ass up and go to a game?

I'm so sick and tired of this crap. Everyone begged for Rick Pitino you got it. Everyone begged for the team to start winning. 3 game winning streak and 5-1 in the last 6. Winnable game. SHOW THE F UP

Lol, sorry Dave but unless you also have a newborn at home then you wouldn't understand. Not everyone's life revolves around St. John's like yours.

Just bought 5 tickets to the UConn game this morning- bringing my parents, uncle, wife and baby (gets in free). Sorry if that's not good enough for you.

if you're talking in general and not directed at me, then yes I stated that more than 10K should show up- would like to see around 13-14K. Weekends being better than weekdays for a lot of people is just reality.

I'll also just say, 8:30 PM on a week day is a tough ask. There's a reason no NBA/MLB game starts at that time locally (NFL is a totally different equation).

One benefit of getting a streamer in our next TV deal is that maybe we don't need to do that anymore for home games. My friend and I want to go to the Seton Hall away game, but 8:30 PM on a Tuesday isn't a simple calculation -- even if we're in our early 30s.

In sports there's often a lag btwn results and attendance. Keep winning and the people will come.
how many more wins? why do we have to keep moving the goal posts? when is it enough? it's always excuses with this awful fan base - the fact that there will be less in the building on Weds night at this point in the season than on a Monday night for game 2 against Michigan is incredibly disappointing and the fan base should be mocked endlessly

That wasn't a personal attack on you, clearly I was talking in general about your points pertaining to the fan base. You can keep your personal insults to yourself and save it for people that deserve it.

This is what I'm talking about with moving the goal posts - so 6:30 is a tough ask for everyone not in the city...8:30 is a tough ask on a week day? Sooo then what isn't a tough ask? Every game can't be at noon on a Saturday. Why do other fan bases show up at 6:30 or 8:30? Why is it such an issue with St. John's? Again - the fact is nothing is ever good enough. Timing, pricing, location, seat size, temperature, on and on and on...when is enough enough? How do you expect to build a winning culture - which the fans have to be a part of - if this is how things are gonna always be?
