Asst coach discussion

It’s looking like DeMeo has taken the last spot for assistant coach for the Johnnies and MA’s staff. Paul Pressey will come on in the special assistant to the head coach role. Solid, solid staff. MA has tried to cover all his bases, something he did not do with his staff at Arkansas. Hungry, seasoned staff with connections everywhere. Excited to see what these guys will get accomplished together!
I have to disagree here, his staff at Arkansas was just as qualified as the staff he is assembling here.

Melvin Watkins his associate head coach, was an extremely qualified coach and did a great job at Arkansas, despite what some Arkansas fans like to say about him now. The guy has connections all over the nation and brought us in some good out of state recruits. And let's not act like he wasn't the best big man coach in school history. Portis, Gafford, and Kingsley all gave credit to Watkins, all 3 of those guys were all SEC players, 2 of them SEC POY caliber, and 2 of them are/will be first round draft picks. You can't name another assistant coach that developed big men as well as he did that collected more accolades in such a short time. Watkins was also the lead recruiter on 4-star out of state prospects such as Jimmy Whitt, Moses Kingsley, Nick Babb, and Jaylen Barford.... And I know I'm forgetting some, but those are the name that come to my head right away.

And Scotty Thurman was an up and comer. He's arguably one of the most popular players in school history and had been working for the school for several years and developing before he was promoted to an assistant coach. He more than paid his dues, and in his short time he landed some good prospects, most notably Reggie Chaney, 4-star out of Nevada. And his biggest contribution was a shooting coach. Under his watch we had some of the best shooting years in school history, with the Macon/Hannahs team, and this year when Isiah Joe broke every single season 3-point shooting record and tied the SEC record.

But, again, to some Arkansas fans it's not cool to present those facts, since the coaches aren't employed by the university anymore, you listen to some people and they will tell you they were just scrub coaches and Anderson wasn't motivated Arkansas. It's amazing how someone so unmotivated managed to never have a losing season at a school before he took over was doing nothing but losing the previous 10 years.
I’m not saying that they did a bad job, or the staff was not competent.. they were a good staff. MW is 64 approaching 65 in November. Scotty Thurman, for as much as I love him, was a baby and largely not very effective on the recruiting trail just yet. The one guy who just absolutely got after it, assistant wise, who was constantly delivering was TJC, who is largely known as a hustler in recruiting circles. One of the reasons I was happy CMA decided to go in a different direction with Watkins. I think the influx of new energy and new ideas will be refreshing for CMA.

Could be. I actually tried looking it up and I have seen it as 39 (CBS site) 29 (some other site) and how 51. It is definitely one of his rules.

All of this, from both of you guys, is great stuff to hear to us long-suffering St. John's fans.
Even your 'toning-down' view is music to us Big Red!

So #51 now.
Okay, that works.

What does Watkins being 64 have to do with anything? The leading candidates running for President in 2020 are all in their mid 70's, I think if someone can run a country in their 70s, then someone can be an effective assistant college basketball coach at 64, Watkins is in perfect health and never any reports about his age slowing him down from doing anything. Watkins was the lead recruiter for most of the prospect that landed us back-back top 25 recruiting classes in 2017 and 2018, and as I said before he was the big man coach that turned 2 guys from not being on any draft boards to the best big men in the conference and first round draft picks.

As far as Thurman, how can you criticize someone that was a big part of creating some of the best shooting teams in school history. He's primarily a shooting coach and our guys have been shooting lights out under him. The main guy he was working with in Isiah Joe literally broke every school 3 point record his first year.

I'm sorry man, not trying to be a jerk to you, but sounds like you've been reading too much Hogville. Nothing you said is based on any facts and you contradicted yourself saying in your first post on how CMA didn't cover his bases on his Arkansas staff, then backtracking and saying it was good staff, and just criticizing MW for being too old and Scotty for being too young, makes no sense.

This place is 100x better than Hogville. I've been on various message boards throughout the years from following my Memphis Grizzlies, to various other boards like gaming etc. And no place I've ever come across has ever come close to the ignorance that is Hogville. Hogville is a place where facts and logic don't matter at all. You're very likely to get ran off and banned for presenting facts. It's about as anti-CMA as you can get over there. And been like that since the day he was hired. The owner of that board created threads all the time calling for CMA to be fired and all his mods just back him up. No lie here, I literally got a PM from one of the mods one time and he told me don't challenge what this one poster was saying because he was good friends with the owner. The guy was making up blatant lies and I provided links disproving him, and the thread got deleted and I got a PM warning me not to challenge what that guy says again. Real Arkansas fans knows Hogville is a joke and it's widely made fun of on the payboards. But, the thing about Hogville, they are really the only free board that has any type of population, so most casual fans and fans of other schools venture there and think it's a accurate representation of our fan base, when it's actually not, it's like a place for the worst of the worst fans to gather and say whatever they want.

If MA felt that way, MW would be in NYC with him about to go into his 14th year with MA. And when I said Scotty was a baby, I referring to in the collegiate coaching industry. Takes time and seasoning imto learn how to navigate throigh the crooked roads of D1 BB recruiting my friend. I absolutely don’t read Hogville, and you (MakingPlays) might know me as Razorback1829 over there.
I’m just saying that there was things that could’ve been better with the staff (or any staff for that matter). MA could’ve used another seasoned guy and a younger, hungrier, more relatable in 2019 coach. They recruited some good classes, but some of those fell apart, some of that is just bad luck, some is the fault of the staff.
Let’s not forget he moved Zimmerman and replaced him with Scotty which was pretty much an equal trade except Scotty had no experience.

I enjoy the banter from our new Arkansas fans here. Gives us new perspectives on our new head coach, staff, etc. welcome aboard! As far as our staff goes now, I think it made sense for Iron Mike to make Cleveland the AHC. He has put in his dues, and seems to be a talented coach and hard-nosed recruiter. From a SJU perspective, Van Macon was a very good addition. He’s been mentioned with several previous hires and is a respected recruiter who has great local connections and otherwise. Steve Demeo who seems to be the front runner for the third spot is another guy known for both recruiting and coaching ability and is well respected. The assistant staff is still plenty young but with a wealth of experience. Thus far as it projects out with Demeo joining the staff, it seems that it is being put together perfectly for our needs here. Very well rounded with good recruiters who have national reach. I’ve read some clamoring on johnny jungle that maybe we could do better but the staff seems well rounded to me.

If they can do better than. Demeo then go for it. I favor recruiters at this point and I don’t think Demeo is primarily that but he certainly is good and has lots of connections. Do we have any recruiters as good as Abdelmassih on staff? I’d say certainly not. I think Hsu was “supposed to” be that guy but CMA wasn’t keen on him. I think we will miss Matt in terms of being able to rapidly fill spots of need with very good players. What we WILL have is better high school recruiting and many more staff members in the recruiting trail, recruiting by committee. We will probably have better talent evaluators as well. Those things go a long way in building a cohesive team. I don’t see the criticism of this staff as all the hires have been solid. In addition, Anderson’s coaching record speaks for itself. Sentiment I’ve gotten from other boards are that nobody likes playing against Mike Anderson’s teams as he puts me through the paces to earn wins.

This staff will recruit far better than the previous one because:
1. Everyone on staff will be active recruiters instead of just one guy
2. The emphasis will be on HS kids with an occasional transfer/JUCO
3. We will have two guys on staff with strong local recruiting ties

With DeMeo joining the team, this will be the best overall staff that we have had in many years
I am very excited about the direction we are heading in
I had mixed feelings about CM leaving, but if I knew that was what we were going to get ..........

My
What does Watkins being 64 have to do with anything?

Appreciate your balanced perspective Red. There seems to be a short supply of balance around here lately.

From everything I've heard Watkins wasn't interested in moving to NYC and it never got to a CMA offering him a job or him turning down the job, if you have any credible sources saying the opposite that CMA just didn't want him here, it'd be interested in hearing about it, and who's saying that.

As far as Scotty, You do realize he'd been on staff for almost 10 years before being promoted to an assistant, he was on Pelphrey's staff 4 years, and on CMA's staff 5 years prior to his promotion, how that makes him a "baby" in the coaching industry, I don't understand that logic. Last year he landed our most coveted out of state recruit in Reggie Chaney, and he beat out Texas Tech, Texas A&M, TCU, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Wichita State, etc. I'd say beating out Chris Beard Beard, Jamie Dixon, and Greg Marshall ain't bad for a "baby." But even outside of recruiting, Scotty was primarily put on staff to be a shooting coach, and under him we've had some of the best shooters in school history, including the best shooter in school history, that's an indisputable fact, I don't see how anybody can criticize somebody for being great at the job they were primarily brought in to do, and then say CMA wasn't covering his bases with the hire.

Also, which classes are you talking about fell apart? There was only 1 class that had any issues, and that was 2015 when Ted Kapita was ruled ineligible by the NCAA then he committed to NC-State and magically got cleared. Is 1 player not making it to campus considered multiple classes falling apart in your book?

And Again, no disrespect to you and I truly mean that, I enjoy the discussion since nothing is really going on, but nothing you have said in this thread is supported by any facts or credible information, just sounds like the bad rumors you hear people say on Hogville. If you have something to add that's supported by actual facts I'm all ears, otherwise I'll let the Johnnie's get back to the Steve Demeo discussion and drop the Hog assistant discussion.

And sorry for the derailment to everyone else :). I couldn't let that misinformation just slid through the cracks.

Ok let’s debunk these one by one. And yes, my sources are credible as they come. Broke the news MA was being let go by UofA over there, blah blah blah, I’m the real deal so listen up:

Watkins wanted to go with CMA. 110%. And I mean why wouldn’t he? He’s been along every step of the way, and has plenty money to live in NYC. So your source is wrong. MA made a painful but wise decision and decided to go in another direction with his staff. TJ got us Reggie Chaney, not Scotty. Again your information is wrong. Gotta stop reading Hogville friend. And the “Hog 5/Hawk 5” deal turned into poo once Reggie Perry left. Sure you got Joe, and Desi Sills will be a good one, but you missed the jewel. And Watkins was responsible for it.
TJ should’ve been AHC at Ark as of 3 years ago when Zimm got demoted and Scotty got the nod. IMO big miss by MA who is an extremely loyal person.
Sorry guys, I really don’t want to turn this into and Arkansas discussion lol

"You got to give Scotty Thurman a lot of credit, recruiting him and staying in touch. Developed a great relationship. Once he got on campus he fell in love with the family atmosphere and just felt at home and was really big."

Interesting that you say TJ landed Chaney, considering not a single member of the Arkansas media gave him credit for it. Richard Davenport, Dudley Dawson, and Kevin McPherson have all reported that Scotty was the lead recruiter on Chaney. Again, this is just facts. I can provide a couple more articles that give Thurman credit as well if you need more verification.

Nothing that you've said about Watkins or Thurman has been true. I just provided article that debunked your Chaney theory, it's common knowledge that Thurman was the guy all over Chaney, there's even quotes of Chaney talking about his relationship with Thurman. You're "sources" are very bad, and I don't even think you have any, I think at this point you're making stuff up to save face cause you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. You're the same guy that said it's a chance Moody would follow CMA to St. John's and not a single person that covers recruiting thinks there's even a 1% chance that happens. I'm done responding until you provide any type of evidence to something you're saying, an article, a quote, heck I'll even take a text message screen shot from someone credible. I don't think you can provide any of that.

Love the fact he is a bringing in an ex-NBA point forward in Paul Pressey. Always liked his game and would never miss the Knicks playing Milwaukee on Ch. 9 or 11 I think. Pressey was tough as nails, played great D and scored his 12-15 pts, 6 rebs & 5-7 assists every game from the forward spot. Having a guy like that on staff can only help.
