Asst coach discussion

It’s looking like DeMeo has taken the last spot for assistant coach for the Johnnies and MA’s staff. Paul Pressey will come on in the special assistant to the head coach role. Solid, solid staff. MA has tried to cover all his bases, something he did not do with his staff at Arkansas. Hungry, seasoned staff with connections everywhere. Excited to see what these guys will get accomplished together!
Love the fact he is a bringing in an ex-NBA point forward in Paul Pressey. Always liked his game and would never miss the Knicks playing Milwaukee on Ch. 9 or 11 I think. Pressey was tough as nails, played great D and scored his 12-15 pts, 6 rebs & 5-7 assists every game from the forward spot. Having a guy like that on staff can only help.
Agree. I am also glad he is occupying the special assistant position and not an assistant spot. CMA has pressed all the right buttons so far. This staff is bound to result in solid recruits and greater player development.

We need to have a Bacon&Beer watch game night have have Making Plays and Big Red Bring the Bacon

I would not rule out the possibility Pressey will tutor Figueroa in the point forward role. I posted last year I thought Mullin should have considered it. Figueroa has BB smarts sndI think could be very productive in that role.

Bacon and Beer sounds good or even a pig roast. Time to put to bed the Arkansas differences. We have enough to work through as St. John’s fans.

I wholeheartedly agree! Pressey will be great at helping develop the bigs. I’m excited about what this team will look like once the other pieces are added.

I agree. My apologies.

Maybe, the full Staff is announced this week?
Nice timing with the 'campus visit' period (quiet time) in swing the next couple of weeks.

Excuse my ignorance, but the 29 different college coaching positions on one team have always baffled me. What’s the difference between a “special assistant” and “assistant” basketball coach?

A "special assistant" or "advisor" (like Gene Keady) cannot recruit off campus. It's also my understanding that they can't directly coach kids. I thought that Keady observed practices and games and gave his feedback and suggestions directly to the coaching staff for their consideration.

Assistant coaches are integrally involved in all phases of the operation, including recruiting and directly coaching the team, etc.

One can recruit, and be on the floor during practice. One can’t. Pretty much the main difference.

One coaches the team and the other coaches the coach

There are probably sneaky ways around it if you really want the special assistant involved. Having the whole team form an intramural team and have special assistant coach them, for instance. "Informal" summer get-togethers with the special assistant perhaps?

Well one can be assured that if they want Pressey on board he will be working with the kids skills on the court. That’s his forte’.

Not during the actual official practice hours. Afterwards and before he can. But once the official practice starts, he’ll be on the sideline watching pretty much. Can only have the 4 coaches plus GA’s and managers out there.
Please land DeMeo soon.
I, too, hope that DeMeo is the choice and that he is named to the position ASAP

I figured that they wouldn't make an announcement around the Memorial Day holiday but I am hopeful that we will hear something by the end of next week

Remember the delay with Dunlap
Revolved around the school fiscal year which starts in June.

Is St. John's FY June 1 to May 31, or July 1 to June 30? I don't want to wait another month . . .
