Any updates on possible assistant coaches?
Hearing Pinkney looks definite & they are working hard on Slice. Exciting times!
Would we be interested in a guy like Al Skinner (BC and Rhode Island) joining the staff ??
Al, 61, is now an assistant at Bryant College in Rhode Island
Just asking.
He would be a great addition. Could really help Chris understand how things work in College basketball. He was a winner at Rhode Island and Boston College.
Agree Slice is the big fish. Mullin did say in Francesa interview that he wants to add a person with HC experience in college game. Additionally, he wants to flesh out his staff quickly. Unless he has someone else in his hip pocket, I suspect Slice is his man. The impression I got from yesterday's Presser is that SJU is willing to inve$t in Mullin's desired staff. Tea leaves, I know, but feeling good about this.Slice is critical IMO. Not only to put the recruiting piece completely over the top, but to have a lead assistant with head coaching experience.
With his pedigree, experience, and connections at all levels of the game I think Mullin is going to overwhelm on the recruiting front. I'm glad he has Matt A. to immediately help him operationally with the current landscape and network, and again I hope he gets Slice so that this thing goes completely off the charts, but I think recruiting is going to come naturally to him. It's a lot of hard work and personality and he has both in spades.
Individual player development and macro team strategy needs no discussion. We're in as good a shape as we've maybe ever been.
But I'd prefer not to have a staff with no HC experience. Fully appreciate the diversity of Chris's basketball experience - and am not at all concerned - but reality is he's never been in a tie game at Nova with 30 second to play where putting the ball in his own hands is not an option. Would be helpful to have someone sitting next to him who has, at least for the first year, to ease that transition. This is not a criticism, just something I think could make Mullin's life easier early on.

Did any one else watch the MCD all American game last night. CD went for 18 points 10 rebounds 4 assists and a few blocks. Got MVP.
Matt A make it happen!!!

While I agree with you 100% about having someone on hs staff with HC experience, I have a slightly, just slightly different take on the final 30 seconds of a game. We do need a guy who knows how to manage the clock in the last 3 minutes of a close game (perennial SJU shortcoming), or in our minds there's a tactician with a clipboard drawing up a final play that's killer. But what I think we need and what Mullin will provide is teaching players to make big plays in big moments, and to be reactive to a situation. No one had to design a play for Mullin to break down a defense when he drew a second defender. Instinctively he knew how to react, where to go so that a teammate would be wide open for an easy deuce. (There should be a word like threece, no?)
I would have loved for Mullin to have gotten into Harrison, Greene, Jordan, Branch's head over the past few seasons, so that in these big moments, they'd relax and know what they had to do in an offensive set (not a set play), and that once open, simply execute. Of course, with Mullin's work ethic rubbing off, making the shot will be the easiest part, because that will come naturally without pressure.
I gotta bet Mullin is NOT going to live in NYC, and will live fairly close to campus, probably on LI. Forget about music blaring in the gym at odd hours into the night, which I'm sure will happen. The sweetest sounds will be the sounds basketballs on hardwood, sneakers squeaking, and the best sound of all, the ball swooshing through the nets late into the night. It's gonna happen.
@DickieV: If he forms a super staff the hiring of the best ever @ ST JOHN'S will be a SLAM DUNK! @StJohnsBBall @howieschwab http://t.co/ErIw15fQaA
Longer this goes with no more additions announced, I would think there is a very good chance you will see Pinckney and Slice on next year's bench.

Dickie V loves Mullin. So I can see the excitement for him.

Everybody doesn't like something, but nobody doesn't like Chris Mullin.
