Someone on there confirming that Matt is gone

Interesting how negative the tone is about Matt. He's a legend on this board, but ISU fans' thoughts on him range from useless to okay/solid.

"He has signed 2 HS recruits since he has been here. Sledge and Okoro. Sledge now plays DII ball and Okoro now averages 2 points in 7 minutes for the worst team in the Big 10. How in the hell does that equate to a top notch college recruiter? He hasn't beat out any schools for any recruit since he has been at ISU. Not one."

I think we are hyping him too much on our end, but I also think he's better than they give him credit for.
It is my impression that Matt played a big role in transfers at ISU, perhaps the best college in country playing that game. I think he will be a fine addition, but agree sometimes the truth is in the middle.

Agree here, but let's remember, he's still a very young recruiter. He's only a 2007 grad. His best signings and recruitments are likely ahead of him. The fact that he's got such a big role recruiting at his age says something, and he's had s significant role bringing talent to ISU. Couple that with his love for SJU and I think it's a very good combo because we are going to get the best out of him with his best days ahead. Just a good fit.

Wow..Impressive to have reached this level at such a young age...what is his connection w/Mullin?

It's amazing just how many people in college basketball have the ultimate respect for and are fans of Chris Mullin. Over the years, even the most successful guys - Coach K referring to Mullin as the player he laments losing the most, Boeheim referring to Mullin as the best college player he'd seen, and tons of other people who were fans of SJU - fans of Mullin - during his time here. The past couple of days, with Mullin coming home, has been a lightning rod to rekindle some of those strong feelings about him.

Mullin is acting like the experienced NBA executive he is - going to work before the ink is dry on the contract, and reaching out in a sky's the limit way to the guys he wants on his staff. He knows what he wants and has the huge advantage that everyone in basketball likes and respects Chris Mullin, and many would want to be part of anything great he is trying to build here.

I'm one of his most ardent supporters and always have been (as my thread indicated), but even I wouldn't have anticipated what has transpired over the past two days. Even Bobby G. was quoted as saying the exact words I've used to describe what Mullin will become - a great ambassador for the university.

As much as I'm a fan of Mullin the athlete and Mullin the person, it's surprising, exciting and gratifying to see him hitting the ground running - NO - running before he hits the ground - to build something special here. Maybe even as special as his glory years.

Time to pony up?

@jimbaumbach: Kentucky assistant Barry Rohrssen's contract, obtained by Newsday, runs thru 6/2016. Pays $375k, but no buyout. Just needs Cal's permission.

@jimbaumbach: I shouldn't even term it as Cal's permission. Contract simply states Rohrssen agrees to not pursue job elsewhere without telling Cal first.

If we could land Slice to go along with MattA , we will rise to national contender on a yearly bases.
. What a recruiting force those 2 would be.

Can't imagine how exciting the recruiting thread will be if we can add Slice to go along with Matt A. Looking forward to some good times.

In the cheesy grade B movies, you'd have short images of guys stuffing their belongs into a suitcase and saying to their wife, "Hurry, get your things. We're heading home."

We're all so giddy right now, and our expectations are sky high. But how much better will it be if, no WHEN, we return to the upper eschelons of college bball and we do it with a bunch of local guys who grew up loving SJU bball.

Thought the same thing beast, honestly have never heard someone say they dont like Mullin. Rare for a star athlete.

We only get three assistants and a DOBO. I don't know what Keady was getting paid for? Do most schools have two recruiters?

Chris Mullin hires top recruiter Matt Abdelmassih

great article. ISU coach and Pacer teammate called him a great basketball mind and Diallos coach said of Diallos final schools. Lavin was the least visible coach .Ironically if Slice comes here 2 of Diallos recruiters will be on our staff.

Telling, but not surprising, comment by Diallo's coach. You would have thought he would have pitched a tent at OSNA, considering how important a recruit Diallo is to our program and, at that time, to Lavin's future.

If Slice comes aboard and Mullin could just sign the top recruiters from Kansas and Pitt we should be all set with Diallo.

Lavin clearly gave up way before last Friday

"On Thursday, the day before being dismissed as Red Storm coach, Steve Lavin visited Diallo at OSNA. But Stelzer said, "I really didn't see him [often]. He was less visible than the other four schools Cheick is considering.

"They've all given him plenty of attention. I'd say St. John's gave him less attention than the others that I was aware of, but maybe some things happened that I wasn't aware of.''"

Yeah appears that way. Oh well doesn't matter now.

To be fair Lavin did his recruiting of Diallo with the handler not thru the HS coach.

Yup
@AdamZagoria: Former Seton Hall/St. John's asst Dermon Player in the mix for Chris Mullin's staff, source confirms to @SNYtv

Worked for Jarvis & BobbyG at SH. This won't happen Imo.

Former right hand guy for Ernie Lorch ar Riverside. Zags is really getting odd.

Don't remember exactly but didn't his hire cause a backlash from some AAU coaches/programs? Did he bring in any prominent recruits?
There was some stir, but don't remember details. Don't remember who he recruited while here, but at Riverside he did work with Omar, Jessie, Artest & Barkley. Long time ago.

You have to understand the AAU situation in this area. They tend to be jealous and yes there were some who didn't like that St. John's was only hiring Riverside Church guys like Alex Evans and Dermon.

I thought it was something like that. Only St. Johns can hire a AAU coach and lose recruits because of it.

Because dealing with AAU coaches is like feeding seagulls. Throw a single one a friggin scrap of a sandwich and all the others care about is getting some from you too as they flock.
