Around the Big East

I think NIT and bubble NCAA is good progress this year. Next year must be NCAA.

If not, I think he needs to go.
I do think he will get a longer leash given what he has meant to this program as a player.

Read John Rooke's column this morning. Always interesting with national & NE sports. Mentioned that Providence had 6.6 million in donations to the Athletic Fund this past fiscal year. 7th straight year that figure eclipsed the previous years. Also this week heard that Alabama made 100 million on their football program. Staggering figure if true. How does St John's compare to the Providence Athletic Fund figure?

I believe their football team made $100 million as they get 100,000 plus per game and tickets are a fortune. On another note their basketball team lost to Canadian Champion Carleton University this weekend on their summer Canadian tour. Coach Avery Johnson just got a 2 year extension which keeps him under contract to 2023 though he has yet to dance in2 seasons. I would imagine his chair will be on fire this season if they don't dance considering their great freshman backcourt of Sexton and Petty.

Is Mullin's chair going to be on fire if Johnnie's dont't dance this season? Same analogy 2 years no dance or tournament,t great back-court. The answer is NO

Not it will not be on fire for a multitude of different reasons. Avery Johnson took over a program that went to the NIT in 2015. Mullin inherited 3 scholarship players who averaged an aggregate 4 points. He had to build a team from scratch.
Alabama has huge money, we are still coughing monthly as we write the cheque to Slice for another 44 odd Months.
Alabama is the second most successful program in the SEC. I don't want to read where we are.
Point being expectations are much higher in Tuscaloosa than in Queens.
Coach Mullin clearly has us going in the right direction, too bad everyone does not see it that way.

Mullin will never get fired. But I think he would step down if we didn't meet expectations in the next few years.

That said, I think he will step away way before he ever has to step down. I think we'll be pretty good next few seasons.

Oh, come on! This is not rational.

Anyone who suggests that SJU should consider replacing Mullin at some point should think back to when Norm was replaced. Before Lavin entered the picture the only coaches who were interested were mid major which is where the SJU program appeared to be going.
While far from being a fan favorite Lavin brought some national prominence with him and got a salary that brought SJU out of the dark ages in that regard. It is hard to imagine SJU paying Mullin what he is getting if he succeeded a mid major coach.
If Mullin were to be replaced who are the candidates?

Mullin's not going anywhere, at least not in the foreseeable future. That said, I'll scream if Jeff Van Gundy's name comes up in this thread.

Why would anyone bring up the possibility of replacing Mullin? As redmannorth eloquently said, Mullin inherited a team that collectively averaged less than 4 points per game the previous year. Coach K or any other "high profile" coach wouldn't have done much better with Mullin's first roster. We improved from 8 wins to 14 wins in year two. This year's roster is an upgrade over last year. To project us to make the NIT this year is a reasonable expectation. If all goes well this year and we continue to recruit as well as we have, I would think that we would be an NCAA candidate next year.

What's wrong with that? Mullin is building a foundation that could sustain us for years to come. We all would have liked better results sooner but, given the situation that he inherited, I believe that Mullin has done reasonably well and has us on the right path. Now, if we don't improve in the next year or two, there would be cause for concern. But I am a firm believer that such will not be the case. I feel that we are headed in the right direction and will continue to move forward in a positive direction.

The Big East is expected to release its conference schedule for the 2017-18 season at some point next week, per a source.

Sad to hear.

Different situation and fan base.

Depaul had hired the kids high school coach as an asst in the spring just prior to his commitment. Was a top BB prep school.

Hate to say it , but Depaul like us needs to show we can win to prevent this from happening. You dont see this at creighton, Nova, and the blue bloods.

Xavier's Chris Mack has received a contract extension through the 2022-23 season, per release.
