Around the Big East

Terrible day for the conference RPI with Seton Hall dropping one to FDU.

Here's hoping for a Creighton comeback and Cooley pulling out a rabbit out of his hat vs. Kentucky (without Kris Dunn).

The way things are playing out, the ramifications of us knocking off Cuse will go a long way come March.

One guy's opinion;

@NewBigEastConf: #BigEast Power Rankings: 10 #SHBB 9 #DePaul 8 #SJBB 7 #Xavier 6 #Marquette 5 #Providence 4 #Butler 3 #Georgetown 2 #Creighton 1 #Villanova

Tough to argue at this point. Very tough league 1-8.

Cauley-Stein made Batts look like a middle-schooler. Blocked him twice in succession.

Providence is entering the 'danger zone,' as they are now down by 9. They badly need a basket after their timeout.

No chance. Cauley Stein reminds me of Kareem with some moves but awkward. Randle etc. when will it end.
Odds on favorite unless Cal messes it up, which is likely.

Question is how many think we can beat Providence and /or Nova??? They have been representing themselves well

Could beat either if playing well, but tough games with both for sure. Providence may be in a bit of trouble if two key guards don't return in form soon. Article;

@JonRothstein: Ed Cooley is bracing for the worst with Providence's injuries and suspensions. Here's more @CBSSportshttp://t.co/ZyS6dL07X3

We've got a month with five spread out games (meaning a lot of practice) to get where we need to be. @X, @Hoyas, and Nova is going to be an even tougher start to conference play than anticipated based on what we've seen so far.

I recall there was some debate about Nova being picked ahead of us over the summer, despite the fact that they beat us twice last year and were an NCAA team. We are in different universes currently with their winning an elite tournament against top teams in conferences/country and our uneven performances in a middling tournament against mediocre competition. But a lot can change between November and January and that game, at home, has the early feel of one that's really going to matter for us.

What has Providence done that really jumps out at you? Nothing, IMO.

Please don't say, it's due to their performance against Kentucky. Kentucky has a ton of talent, but they also struggled against Cleveland State (I believe they were down by 10 with about 7 or 8 minutes left in the game) last Monday. As, I've been saying prior.... It's still early, so let's see how it plays out in the next couple months (for us and any, other team in the country).

As, been mentioned by Paultz and 1512.... It'll be a tough game, but still have time to get it going.

The Big East lost 2 teams this week in the Top 25 with Creighton & Marquette both falling out (Creighton still got 17 votes) but Villanova jumped in at 14 and Xavier is now in the receiving votes section. As for the mighty ACC, they have a whopping 2 teams (Syracuse & Duke). They do have more teams receiving votes but I am sure no one expected the ACC to only have 2 teams in the Top 25 before conference play began. Too bad they didn't take Louisville this year lol.

Creighton and Marquette both deserved to drop as they both lost to SDSU who is now ranked. Xavier did not show much in the tournaments either.
Big East looking kind of average right now. Pittsburgh undefeated and looking tough so far as usual.

Has Pitt really played anyone? Texas Tech & Stanford are the only 2 teams so far on their schedule from a major conference (not sure whether either one is expected to be a major player this year), although they do have Penn St coming up. Otherwise it's Savanah St., Lehigh, Fresno St, Howard & Duquesne. They will probably rack up a few more Ws though regardless of Penn St b/c they still have Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount, Albany, Cincinnati & Youngstown St. I will give them credit, all of their wins have been blowouts.

2 things immediately jump out at me looking at this poll. Kansas ranked ahead of Nova and Duke ranked 10th. Not as bad as the coaches poll which still has UNC in the top 25.

Fordham game needs to be a good effort and tune up for #4 Syracuse. Wins in both those games could turn the season around.

Penn State leading Pitt by 1 on ESPNU. In the first half.

A Penn State win benefits us.
I know a lot of folks like to diminish Penn State -- and I recognize that they will not be a contender for B1G title -- but they are not a bad team. 2 very good guards, role players and good team chemistry....I think they play smart and hard

Not Big East, but I'm glad Georgia Tech knocked off an undefeated Illinois. Can't hurt our RPI.
