Around the Big East

Watching the Creighton - Tulsa game on MSG, man that is one nice arena and they really can pack the house.
And McDermott has a sweet stroke

What I wouldn't give for a real fanbase.

Small college towns breed strong fan bases since it usually is the only show in town. I don't need to tell you that in NYC your fans have plenty of options when your won-loss record over the years has been less than a fan attraction builder.
Add to that two consecutive years of drama, bad luck, player instability and a questionable post season future and voila! A couple of thousand fans disappear. Thus far the play on the court has not kept up with all the rhetoric.

Georgetown squares off against VCU today at 2 on ESPNU. At 9:30 tonight Providence plays La Salle.

G'town has run more pick and rolls in the first half than we have all year.

I've been flipping between Jets game (horrible), Louisville/ UNC (UNC winning by eight right now), and GTOWN. From what I've seen, GTOWN looks really good. I expected a mess because of their loss to NorthEastern, but they've played well so far.

Pick and rolls is one of several facets of the Princeton offense. So, that isn't anything new.

One thing I do love.... I love how VCU are always in constant attack mode. Offensively and (especially) defensively.

Love that full-court pressure defense. If one thing that I wish we'd do; it would be to play a similar style.

The most frustrating thing is we are more athletic than almost any other team in the nation. If we did pressure, we could he deadly. Problem is, do we have the basketball IQ to not foul everytime we press? I feel like if we did do pressure defense Pointer would he fouled out by halftime along with Obekpa and Sanchez.

@JonRothstein: Melvin "The Microwave" Johnson is heating up for VCU. Has 3 3's. Rams up 48-41 over Georgetown. HAVOC starting to pick up. Hoyas w 19 TOs.

I was also thinking about the IQ level of the team. But maybe if we did it on a consistent basis ala VCU, then at some point it could become muscle memory and they probably wouldn't foul as much.

Regardless, I'd give it a go, if I was the staff. You can see how G'town is in somewhat of a panicked frenzy dealing with it.

Georgetown up 6 with 6 to go. If this holds, the loss to Northeastern becomes a net positive. See, JT3 knew what he was doing.

nice win for the Hoyas and the best win so far for the new conference. I didn't realize that got that Smith kid from UCLA, didn't he kill us a few years back. With that backcourt and experienced frontline they're gonna be a solid team.

I'm gonna love seeing Smith and Gardner go at it when the play Marquette

As a team we are very athletic, but you press with your guards, and our guards aren't some of the most athletic guys in the country let alone the conference. Rysheed is the most athletic of the group and he hasn't gotten going yet.

I believe we could press with Jordan, Branch, Pointer, and Balamou. I also wouldn't discount using Sampson nor Harrison to press, either.

Getting back to the VCU/G'town game.... G'town shot lights out from the FT line in the second half. VCU played a bit wild on the offensive end, which got them into some trouble midway through the second half. Not to mention, they were having some issues in the halfcourt set. They do a good job of getting to the line (taking advantage of the emphasized foul rules), but they missed some key FTs in the second half.

By the way, this game lasted 2 hours and 50 minutes, and it wasn't an OT game. Foul, foul, foul, foul, and more fouls. That's ridiculous!

Pointer and Rysheed would be a good top of the zone and Obekpa is as good as it gets to play back by the rim. I'm not anti zone I just don't think our team is as suited to play 40 minutes of pressure as some think.

Actually, I'd be fine without it being 40 minutes of pressure. Pick our spots when to use it, but USE IT and use it game in and game out, nonetheless.

I agree Dink. Every once in a while, you catch the opponent off guard by pressing. I think as the season goes along a few more defensive schemes will be incorporated.

62 fouls total, two players from each time fouled out. Sounds like the refs were all over the new rules.

Josh Smith - what a manbeast for the Hoyas. When he gets up a head of steam, clear out of the lane!

Not a Big East score, but Vermont up 78-77 against Duke (at Cameron) w/3:53 remaining, and Vermont is going to the line after being fouled on a 3-point attempt.

I've seen enough college hoops during the first couple weeks to say that we're dealing with either some early season rust or parity is definitely in the game.

EDIT: Tied at 81-81 w/3:08 remaining.
