Around the Big East

I know it's not fun to have started the BE schedule 0-3 and we're going to have to have some of these big games go our way, but our 4 losses have all been to VERY good teams. Villanova and Gonzaga are 5 and 6 in RPI, Seton Hall is 19 and Butler is 28.

Losing two at home already, no matter opposition, makes it crucial to win on the road, a hard task on its own. Funny before BE play commenced, some posters were worried about other teams pulling the league down. Goes to show it is best to be concerned about your own results. If we go 0-5 isn't it fair to say we are not "very good" and boxing ourselves in a corner once again. Or will we beat to death all the reasons we lost & talk about things being easier going forward. There is nothing easy in the BE. Win the next two & then we can say we are back on a positive track.

Once Thomas and ADR failed to qualify AFTER being enrolled I knew we were going to be one other player away from being an average team at best. That player has been Rysheed Jordan. Phil Green is just not a quality Big East starter and Branch is not a scoring threat. Lavin's big mistake was not recruiting over players like those two as other big time programs would have done. Carrington would have made a big difference on this team.

i hate killing current players but I couldnt agree more about Phil Green. 39% from the field and 32% from three and he does that terrible motion with his hand like he is shooting a gun on the rare occasion that he knocks a shot down. Stop acting like an amateur and play the game. You arent Steph Curry, get down the court and play defense instead of making a spectacle of yourself. Everytime he touches the ball i get anxiety....hes the only player on the team i say that about. Its painful watching him.

Phil contributes at times, but agree with you Avon. He is becoming very proficient at taking ill advised shots at the worst moments. Rhythm breaker too often.

I get it you guys don't like PGiv I know another guy who doesn't like him, Jim Boeheim, he mentioned it after the Syracuse game. Doesn't like how he killed them down the stretch.

If one game made a player then Max Hooper would have started last year after hitting 6 of 7 three-point shots in Italy. Unfortunately some players like that never learned how to play defense or pass the ball. It should tell you a lot about this team when Phil starts over the highest ranked player you recruited in 5 years.

So much for that Minny win, they lost again last night at home. 0-5 in Big Ten.

Richard Pitino should be fired!

Fine by me. There loss could be our gain.
SJU should swoop in and hire him the very next day.

Are you naturally delusional or did you smoke some wacky weed with your coffee this morning ?????

What's delusional? That I would want little Ricky? Or, that he would entertain coming to St Johns?

I will not say a bad word about our modern day "Wonder Five" which is comprised of the four seniors and Obekpa. They have done everything asked of them, and then some, this year.

Forget what these kids have done in the past. What they are doing now, is worthy of appreciation, not scorn.

It may be difficult, but everyone should separate their feelings from Lavin and the "Wonder Five."

As one who must be considered in the running for "Lavin's harshest critic" I could not agree with you more. As Paultzman has posted on occasion, it is a shame they got no help coming into this year. They deserve just what you say appreciation and respect, nothing less, regardless of mistakes they make on the court. I have criticized the group in the past for lack of effort and committment but there has been none of that from any of the "Wonder Five" (as you've coined them) this year.

He did recruit over Branch with Jordan. We also recruited Carrington and Whitehead but they didn't pick us. There's a difference between not recruiting a player and not getting him. If Harrison wasn't here as well it would have been easier to recruit over Phil. Not many guys want to go to a team and be the 3rd SG. Brandon Sampson committed to us this week. Think he would have if Harrison and Greene were coming back next year?

Lavin stopped recruiting both players.

Can someone elaborate on B Sampson please !

Butler gets another quality win last night. They have some nice wins over ranked teams.
Now, Lets take care of our business tonight. We NEED this game tonight fellas. Keys to tonight...
#1- D'Angelo needs to stay hot
# 2- Stay OUT of foul trouble
# 3- A focused Jordan who drives to the hoop
# 4- Crash the boards, need OFFENSIVE rebounds
# 5- Keep intensity up on defense
# 6- Good passing, no chucking up shots
easy enough? lol
LETS GO JOHNNIES !!!!!!!!

well, I was right about # 1 and # 3, great win fellas. The bench came through with some stella minutes too.

Kenpom now has the BigEastConference ranked as the #2 basketball conference behind the Big12 having passed the ACC during the past few days.

Here is how Kenpom rates the strength of his top 7 conferences at this point in the season:

1 Big 12 Conference
2 Big East Conference
3 Atlantic Coast Conference
4 Big Ten Conference
5 Southeastern Conference
6 Pac 12 Conference
7 Atlantic 10 Conference

Xavier wins by four over M'Q at home. WoJo has his kids working hard. M'Q just has no bench strength.

A tremendous game played between Georgetown and butler. Georgretown ended up with a big win. Providence now playing Creighton at CU. pink out game, but prov looks sharp up 12-4 early.

I thought that timeout by Holtman after a made basket, with 12.5 seconds to go, was a big mistake. Georgetown was out of TO's and it allowed them to slow things down and set up their offense. I'm not sure the 3 was what JT3 drew up, since they were only 1 point down, but it worked out.

Agreed. Also a head scratcher that they played zone D in those final seconds. Don't see that often. They just left the guy in the corner.

Excellent point, Jack. They should have been in a man with a man down low looking to hedge and close the lane in case the defender got beaten on a drive.

:yell: Butler goes up by one with 12.5 seconds left in the game. Thompson has no timeouts, doesn't matter. Butler's coach calls the timeout allowing G'town to set up their last shot. Bingo! Three pointer from the corner.

@NYPost_Brazille: Khadeen Carrington is Big East Rookie of Week for second time. Seton Hall owns award this year #

Phil Greene made weekly honor roll.
