Around the Big East

Whine fest, us against the world nonsense;

Dan Hurley speaking about the refs today:

"I don't think there's another program that's won as much as we've won that gets as bad of a whistle."

He is absolutely full of shit. UConn gets away with more moving screens than any team I've ever seen. They push with their arms, they don't remain stationary and sometimes do even both on the same screen like an OL in football. There were times were the player they were trying to spring pushed off AND the screener helping them set an illegal screen on the same play. You can just imagine how open that kid got on that play.

That said, there were a lot of instances where the ballhandler (Telfort mainly) was allowed to play bullyball where an offensive foul should have been called but officials have allowed that everywhere this year (see Dixon, Eric)

Marquette is not unbeatable, but they are cat quick on D. Last night they had 18 steals and a ton of deflections. That obviously generates a lot of easy buckets and breaks the offensive rhythm of opponents.

Hurley: Any win right now until we get mcneely back is a great win.

Hmmmmmm...I feel like I heard someone on this board telling you guys this.
U Conn is exactly who they've been all season. Hurley was just slow in figuring it out.

He coached the beginning of the season as though he had a team like the last two years, which he did not except in his dreams.

After he lost a bunch of games he woke up and decided he had to scrap the idea of playing the same way and instead gave the ball to McNeely. Or Flagg, whoever.

Then Flagg got hurt and now he's screwed because

(1) Karaban is not The Guy, he is a guy who looks a lot better when he's playing with 3 pros and now he's only playing with one (or none with Flagg McNeely out)
(2) He has mostly wasted Ball (who is finally getting to show more of his skill set with McNeely out);
(3) He has completely wasted Mahaney; and
(4) He has irrational affection for Samson Johnson

All in all, not an especially awesome job by Hurley this year. A fair bit of the pounding square pegs into round holes problem, actually. But he's still a very good coach and McNeely is good enough that he will probably hang around 4th place in the BE, make the NCAAT, and win a game or two. Which isn't far behind what a reasonable expectation for that team was coming into the season anyway.

With that season ending outcome, I assume Mullins Revenge portals, any idea where he ends up?
