Around the Big East

True, but in actuality, all the need to do is latch onto one of the big football conferences due to their basketball prowess and get the money. Whether they can every upgrade their football would remain to be seen. Their carrot would be the basketball success and what that brings with it to a conference that wants it. I think we've seen that a few don't care.
Agreed, actually that was meant to be my point, but I didn’t make it very well at all; you did, thanks……..

Sorry but I have to disagree with you again. Consider this, if Yukon was not in the league, perhaps Creighton, Marquette and yes even the Johnnies would have been ranked higher. While it’s true that Nova has faded, there are other quality teams in the conference and in fact some believe were it not for our two losses to Yukon we may have been dancing, as well as a few other teams.

In terms of a TV deal, you are only assuming we would not have gotten as good a deal. From what I recall, we had good TV deals prior to Yukon.

My point is this, the ones who benefitted most from Yukons emergence in the conference was Yukon period. You have to show me tangible evidence how St. John’s has benefitted. Your points are everyone else’s are mostly supposition. And yes, while I do despise their program, fans etc. that has not influenced my thoughts on this topic.

In short, the Big East fared fine without them in the past and would continue to do so in the future.
Suppose I agree with you that UConn benefitted more, it doesn’t mean the conference didn’t benefit which they truly did. It does matter who benefited more, the fact is both sides benefited and that can’t be denied.

Our TV deal prior to UConn was what we could get, a fair deal but not a good deal. No way do we get this deal without UConn. The other partner networks don’t get involved without UConn, even if Nova had maintained their level. The UConn nbrand carries weight in both Men’s and Women’s basketball. It did not hurt Marquette’s or Creighton’a rankings (he’ll looked where they were seeded for the tourny).

The UConn loses didn’t hurt us, the BC and Michigan are the ones that did tremendous damage.

We will just have to disagree on this one.

You follow the vanillanova board on twitter and post their info here yet nothing on St. John's? Your daughter hadn't transferred the until YEARS after Paul gave us this site. There is no need to post that Dana O’Neil has been named Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communication at Villanova. Nobody cares but you. This was always about St. John's, not to plug colleges our kids attended. I've had 2 posts removed since my return.
I'd be more than happy to help out deleting posts that deal with the opposition in any positive way. You, better than anyone, should know that.

Otis' post has to do with what is going on in the Big East, not sure why you have a problem with it. If you have a personal issue with him, discuss it in a private message,

Unlike your post, Otis's was actually on topic. Please avoid posts that serve no purpose other than making personal attacks on moderators or anyone else. Thanks.

You are a cranky old man maybe? But the post shows the level of hire that our conference competition is making. Another way of saying if you didn't know who Dana O'Neil was before reading Otis' post you must not follow sports very closely.

It was for Otis benefit. Period. Was never the purpose of this board.

making personal attacks on moderators or anyone else. WTF?

hHave done that in the past. he jumped on the nova wagon when his daughter transferred in.
That's where he belongs.

If Otis liking Nova bothers you, wait until you meet Mullins Revenge!

Anyway in case the original reply and warning were somehow unclear: the purpose of the site is not for you (or anyone) to air your grievances with other posters. It's to talk about the topics that the threads are about. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Mullin's Revenge? Look forward to reading tat one,,

I'm not counting any chickens.

X, UConn, Creighton and Marquette are all very tough. You can throw SJU in there and you have the probably top 5 in the conference. Think SJU is unlikely to be top 2 so more likely to be bottom 3 in that tier.

At the other end of the spectrum, DePaul, Butler, Nova, Georgetown, Seton Hall are very likely to be the bottom 5. I would say Nova and Butler are probably the top 2 of the bottom 5 and the others are the bottom 3 in the tier.

What that leaves is a middle tier of one team: Providence, which I think will be 6th but could sneak up to 5 if one of those teams runs into trouble or 7 if one of those teams excels (or Providence underperforms).
Lawmanfan, don't disagree with your analysis, but for me finishing 5th which we did last year would be unacceptable and a miss for our coach. I would be ok with 4th because it's tangible improvement and in my view would definitely have us dancing as 3 bids last year was an anomaly.
But a really successful year for me would be top 3 in conference and top 20 nationally which I believe is not an unrealistic goal.

What if we finished 5th but were a consensus top 25 team?

Just don't see that happening, but if it somehow worked out that way I'd probably call it a push but wouldn't be overjoyed.
Agree. Getting so many new players in sync along w the hope for uptick in development of year two guys are fair issues of concern, but I feel cautiously optimistic this talented team can make some “Dance” noise.

If UConn is such a boon to the Big East in terms of prestige, ranking etc, then why did we only get three teams in the Dance last year?

The myth of UConn is alive and well on this board. I've never understood it. The Big 10, ACC and Big 12 have now shown repeatedly that they want nothing to do with them - even as the ACC is scrambling for relevance.

If UConn wasn't in the Big East, they would be back in the AAC - where they were withering away for years before the Big East rescued them. (A huge mistake by the way, which disadvantaged every other Big East school since now all of us have to compete with a school with taxpayer resources.)

Agree with everything except I think the ACC might have taken them, based solely on the imminent loss of their stronger football schools. Florida St was in that "SUPER 4?" last season. Are Clemson/Miami still formidable recently? Wake, Pitt & Va. can't be much worse than yukon. yukon had a good hand this summer, they just sat down at the wrong table. I really think the ACC would have listened, certainly closer than the BIG16.
With 17 schools, they're kinda in limbo. I'd help contribute if it meant they're leaving. Football backers aren't happy. This ain't over.
