Around the Big East

Currently true that we are a bottom 4 team.
Also currently true that we are a game away from being a top 4 team - and interestingly have (by a nose) the 4th best NET in the league.
Opportunities ahead vs everyone except X.
Now SJU has to take advantage of them - can afford a loss at Marquette, but beyond that it's time to take care of business.
We control our post-season chances. We do not require help from any team but ourselves.

Every game left is winnable for this group. Couldn't ask for more.

I have said this before, the main concern of getting into the tournament vs. quality of play and effort are, in my mind, mutually exclusive. I am way more into the product that is put out on the court over the course of a season. Obviously many here disagree, and I certainly get that.

I agree with you - build a cohesive system and get a consistent effort that you can root for, the results will follow. The problem is that I am not sure how realistic it is under current circumstances to have cohesion, continuity, and consistent effort. Too easy for players to choose an easier and sometimes more profitable path.

Creighton might not even be ranked when we play them after losing to Providence last night. We better beat Marquette on Saturday

After last night’s results I’m even more convinced that we need to go 6-2 in the last eight to guarantee ourselves a spot in the NCAA Tournament. If not, then we need to make the championship game in the BET.

Back at you with the agree but only to a large extent, not with the effort part. But that is on the player, IMO, not the coach.

These others teams are improving over the course of the season. We have not improved at all so they have all passed us.

St johns is a bottom 4 big east team.
Disagree, a lot can happen with 8 games left. Completely trust Pitino will find a strategy going forward. Look what the Knicks have done with Divincenzo. His arms are ready to fall off, he’s shooting so many threes and it’s been successful. I would not be surprised if Pitino employs a similar strategy with Dingle. Have faith. He’s a hall of fame coach that has been successful EVERYWHERE!

It doesn't matter if they're "ranked." Their NET is 17. It will be a Quad 1 win if we beat them.

And it has long been my view that we DO need to beat them (and the Hall) at home in order to get in. Those wins will keep our NET in the 30s; another win over DP and two over GT will get us to 19 wins and someplace between an 8 and 10 seed. Win a game or two in the BET and the window shifts to between a 7 and 9 seed.

Bonus points for beating Marquette, Butler or Providence on the road, none of which I expect, but would be hugely helpful.

Not as daunting as it sounds. We play Gtown twice and DePaul one more time so subtract them, assuming we win these and we only have to go 3-2 over the “real” games. Winning Saturday gets us on the right path and finally gives us a signature win.

Watched Creighton lose to Butler and Providence in last week.

Conclusion - They obviously are not savage defenders, have no bench and rely on starters to play mega minutes every night. On plus side everyone in top six rotation can shoot and McDermott runs an incredibly effective movement offense.

Regarding our chances at MSG, I much prefer playing them at CA sweat box w crowd all over them.

Secondly, I can’t imagine a Johnny team so dependent on one scoring guy matching their production. Butler and PC both beat CU recently w outstanding shooting & multiple scorers. I guess there is a slim chance we harass them w stifling D, but where has that been net of Nova games.?

Sorry, but just can’t see this offensively deficient team matching their offense nor defending effectively. I don’t think there will be much of an MSG crowd either to make a difference. Hope I am dead wrong on all counts, but I doubt we take this one.

Problem with squandering every close opportunity early on is that you have no margin for error late. Where we are now.

Creighton is still in the top 25 , so the Win by PC
last night was BIG. Even though the Friars held serve on their home court .
We don’t have that Ranked opponent Win and need it badly as so many others have posted already .

Butler , PC , X and SH all have better resumes right now than we do . It’s not inconceivable that those 4 plus UCONN and Marquette , Creighton would be the BE 7 teams in the Tourney ? Doubtful .
What do we have to do to get ourselves into the Dance ? Win them all!

When we play PC again up there , Soriano is going to have his work cut out trying to defend Oduro . Maybe RP puts Ledlum on him or goes Zone ? Oduro basically outplayed Kalkenbrenner last night by a wide margin , no pun intended . And , Carter was All World for a night .

Winning needs to start Saturday … A loss puts us in jeopardy . Not impossible but , we have to beat a Ranked Team sometime ..

Theoretically Creighton should be a good matchup for us. Both defenses are designed to limit their opponent shooting 3s, something their offense wants to do and ours doesn't. Their deep drop PnR D where Kalkbrenner doesn't even bother to leave the charge circle should be exploitable by mid range scorers like Jenkins and Dingle.

That said, still thought Creighton got solid looks from 3 in the first matchup and we blew a major opportunity in Omaha by not picking up the W when they only went 6-27. On the flip side, it was probably Jenkins' worst game of the season too. Creighton is better than SHU but they might be the better matchup for us.
