Around the Big East

Was he candid? Was it explained fully? Cause during the introductory press conference, he said he had to meet with most of the other players before making a decision. So coming out of the press conference, there was still a shot that he could have retained some other guys. It didn't play out that way, which is fine... really, it is.
Agree, Jack. Some of the more "in the know" posters here say that Pitino was at least interested in keeping both Posh and Storr. No need to throw the entire last year's roster under the bus due to the bad behavior of some players.

From what I can tell, despite not having a ton of inside info admittedly, it was Storr who wanted out of here, Pitino wanted him. Who wouldn't?

Which again its fine for AJ to make that decision, but lets not act like Pitino knew exactly who he wanted on 3/21 when he was hired on 3/20 lol. he said as much during the conference when he said he had to meet with other players before coming to a conclusion.

The reality is some of these guys were kicked on the way out by some cocky St. John's fans who thought we were too good for them once we got Rick. They got caught in the hype and headlines as you mentioned. In reality, some of those guys could have helped us this year. I don't think acknowledging that is "silly" which brings me to my next point.

I'm not gonna lie, I am getting sick and tired of the narrative that we should never "long" for former players because they didn't win enough when they were here.

Our coach was not good, did not have control over the team (clearly) and we were a poorly run basketball team. That says absolutely nothing about the individual talent we had.

How is AJ Storr on a 13-4 Wisconsin team? He didn't win anything while playing for Mike Anderson, therefore we can't talk about his potential value? Do I have that right?

I don't get you guys sometimes, its a st johns basketball forum and you act like discussing past st johns players, who were literally here less than a year ago, is some off limits topic? I literally read some of you guys discuss Mike Jarvis weekly. The Jarvis era.. who gives a fuck about the Jarvis era in 2024? Well people on here do because they live and breathe st johns basketball. Thats cool with me.

Should past coaches who failed here be off limit topics due to silliness?
Should past seasons where we didn't win a lot be off limits due to silliness?
Should past players who were on the team LAST season be off limits due to silliness?

I am just trying to figure out all the unwritten rules.

No one was even talking about our former players in here until one poster who shit on Posh to prop up Jenkins play. Whether you find it silly or not that right there invites a discussion about Posh/Jenkins which leads to talk about former players.
We disagree, deal with it; you see, there are no rules, there are just opinions and ours differ. And for the record, Pitino sharing that he got a negative report “culturally”, if you will, from a retained coach on all but the two players he kept, in my mind, that explains it fully. Also, in my mind, the widely accepted as fact, negative reaction of Father Shanley after observing a practice ties into reports that he was a player in the decision to turn the roster over, if not the decision maker.
As for topics to be discussed, that is not even remotely my point; I don’t tell anyone else what to think or communicate; I understand and respect fully, my “silly” may be someone else’s “noteworthy”. That difference doesn't make me right and them wrong, it just means we disagree.
But, I guarantee neither of us are going to change the others mind.

It's funny how constructive criticism is seen as ruthless bashing and folks are called haters for pointing out inadequacies. And those "haters" all admit that he's still one of the team's best players and the only viable option at his position to boot. Folks just want to see him improve in the core functions of a PG. It's not like he's Erick Barkeley or Omar Cook or Mark Jackson, or Shamorie or Marcus or . . .

Daniss is playing at a level where I see his recent STJ comps as PGIII (PGIII better), Rasheen Dunn, Posh, Rysheed (who could have been, and was often, far better), etc... If that's where he is why should he be immune from criticism. Hey, he's a lot better than Boothe, Stith and Geno, I'll give him that.
PGIII had a GREAT senior year playing off the ball. If given the choice between who id rather play point I would take Jenkins 10/10 times.

No you’re correct! PGIV
People still dont love PG4 but the run at the Carrier Dome was one of the best sports moments of my life. I hated Syracuse so much growing up and just wanted ONE against them. People forget we barely lost to them the year previous at MSG when they were undefeated.

Funnily enough that PG4 run to beat Cuse opened the floodgates and we never lost to them again

Oh yes. I four year starter who always gave his all. I remember exactly what I was doing that day vs cuse. LONG overdue. Phil got the chance to play off the ball that season and was vindicated because of it. Doesn’t look like Jenkins will get that chance.

That assumes you think I think Jenkins is "running the point". As one of the two combo guards being discussed Jenkins has slightly PG skills, both dribble(d) around too much but there is a bit more creativity and distribution in Jenkins game. But PGIII (IV whatever) has far better SG skills, after a complete dud of a soph year he shot just under 40% from 3 his last two years. If he were bringing the ball down, using the screen and hoisting it up and making 40% there would be far less complaints than there is now. But in all honesty that was another class without a PG until Rysheed showed up, when he did show up that is. If the problem you see with Jenkins is his love for any shot then Greene can be seen as an upgrade.

I suspect his coach thinks he's running the point and doing a decent job of it. He is third in Big east in assists behind only Newton & Kolek and his assists to turnover ratio (2.6) is slightly better than both Kolek (2.4) and Newton (2.3). That's not to say I don't think he shoots a little too often and sometimes too early in the shot clock but he's clearly been one of our 2 best players all year long.

IMO, clearly the best player, not perfect by any means but clearly the Johnnie’s best player. Hopefully, Soriano decides to come to play and puts him in the rear view mirror for that distinction the rest of the year.
