Around the Big East

Nova at Butler trails by 10 at half. Butler’s talented big man Bates is not playing either

Not talking about bankrupting UConn, Just the windfall the BE will get. Hopefully it happens after the next media rights negotiations are over. However you said it was a problem that they will bolt for a Power 5 conferences. So is it or isn't it?
You’re obviously looking at UCONN leaving the BE as a windfall for the BE. First of all, I’m sure UCONN will fight paying the full fee. I don’t trust them. As I said, I don’t believe they should have ever been allowed back in the conference. But now that they are here, yes, it will be a problem if they leave. The disruption that would cause may more than offset any “windfall” the BE gets from them leaving.

Remember, UConn was mediocre at best their last few years in the AAC. They were sliding headlong into irrelevancy in that oddball conference. Moving back to the Big East made them relevant again. The Big East gave more to UConn than they give to the Big East.

In the grand scheme of things (aka the . mainstream media), is the Big East really that much more relevant than the AAC? You don't see much coverage of either. Think about it. Oh, and I was also told Danny Hurley is the reason UConn found a revival. So which is it?

Nova losses to Butler and is now 2-5 in conference. The way they handled the Johnnies I thought they were pretty good. Boy was I fooled. Getting tough to win on the road in conference.

Two things…
1. The Big East is far superior to the AAC, and was when UConn was in the AAC. Just look at the rankings.
2. Hurley would not have taken the UConn job if they weren’t already admitted to the Big East.

Did the Johnnies just get a quad 2 win?!?

Butler looked good tonight. Nova gave them all they could handle and was engaged I thought Nova was going to pull away mid 2nd half, but credit to Butler they executed down the stretch and pulled out the win. By the end of the season that should hold as a Q2 win, Butler isn't going to be easy for anyone to beat.

The league was still good without UConn they don’t need them. In basketball the Big East is a top 4 conference pretty much every year. UConn raises the talent level of the league so it’s good to have them. They don’t hide their desires to get into a power football conference, pretty much every school wants that. They suck at football anyway where are they going to go? Maybe the ACC after Clemson and FSU jump ship to the SEC one day. They do have regional rivals there already with the old Big East teams. Best thing the league did was move away from football.

Look at how much success the Big Jay, sorry the Big East, has had since realignment.
No way we're a second tier league.

They hired Jim Mora last season and improved to 6/7. Let’s see what happens going forward, I for one will not say they will never be good at Football. Only time will tell

They were in a bowl game this year too which generated some excitement and likely brought in money also. Mora has brought some attention to the program (not to equate it with Alabama or my time at Michigan State, but more than has been apparent in over a decade). Don't think the current president is much of a sports buff, but time will tell.

The football program still loses money. Making a small bowl game does not change that.

Also (and forget politics) there is a real recession. Budget cuts are coming from all over, including tax dollars to state universities, like UConn.

Put aside the obvious importance of police and other public services that take precedence, but I doubt UConn makes cuts to its basketball program to feed any upgrades to the football program that will max out with more trips to middling bowl games.

The UConn basketball coach has always been the highest paid CT state employee. And that will not change.

Didn't see the game, but Butler at Hinkle, generally plays as a much tougher opponent than Butler on the road.

Probably the biggest home/road discrepancy of any Big East team, since the new league was formed. This year appears no different.

Instead of complaining about Big East leadership, about bringing back UConn, etc., at what point will we look at the absolute disservice St. John's has done to the Big East brand for the last 30 years?
Really? A disservice? You really think that we’ve done a disservice to the Big East brand over the last 30 years? That is quite an exaggeration, considering we are the ONLY Big East school in the media capital of the US, if not the world. And yes, that does count for something.

St. John's has been a liability to the Big East because mediocrity is considered a step up for the program.

Except for one brief moment in 1999, SJU has done nothing for the BE on any scale since Lou retired.

We give nothing to the BE, but we always have our hand out for those great revenue-sharing NCAA runs by our conference brethren. (Thanks for balancing our books Jay!)

And a program in the media hotbed of Spokane, WA, has one of the best national profiles out there.

This is not 1979. Being in NYC is irrelevant especially when you lose. Nobody in the media cares about St. John's because we don't win.

Oh Tony if that was only true today. New York was big when Big meant something but , today ? I don’t see it anymore . I was a life long New Yorker until Retirement and moved South . Much of the Media Capital in NYC is despised in a lot of America areas . I’m not going to the Political arguments but , how much has the Media Capital in NY helped St John’s during these troubled times for our BB Program? Answer , none .

That's because outside help is useless if you are unable or unwilling to help yourself.
