Around the Big East

What's not to like about a fellow Vincentian urban school (as long as they are not playing us). Ray Meyer was a great coach, wished we had more Looie/Ray matchups. I always felt we should have played them every year before BE--a Vincentian/Big City rivalry.
Yeah but the NCAA tournament “free throw game” at DePaul still irks me. SJU was about to roll into DePaul and advance, before the referees put on a clinic on the abomination of officiating.

We thought we already had our hands full with the likes of Kalkbrenner, Wahab and Sanogo next year. It’s a good thing we now have Keita to match up and eat some fouls for Soriano at Center.
I'm hopeful that we do not need Keita to provide many meaningful minutes.

Jon Rothstein posted these stats. This alone further fuels my optimism for the season.

Big East Returning Scoring By Percentage:
Xavier: 71.2%
Creighton: 70.1%
Villanova: 65.3% with Justin Moore, 47.2% without Justin Moore
St. John's: 57%
Butler: 54.9%
DePaul: 45.6%
Marquette: 41.8%
Seton Hall: 32.2%
Georgetown: 32.1%
UConn: 27.4%
Providence 17.5%

Not that it makes me any less optimistic, and it’s still a pretty good number, but;
Champ, Wheeler, Smith, and Coburn combined for 39.8 pts a game. As a team we averaged 79.6 points. So exactly 50%.

That's a bit of an oversimplification. Games you don't play can't be counted so they actually combined for 1,220 total points out of 2,547 meaning it's actually 52.1% of points returning. Maybe Rothstein's only counting BE games.

You could be right I don’t know. But if you are, say champ missed 15 games or anyone’s leading scorer. Would you want to judge whats coming back by their total points or their collective average?

No I would not. Just a stickler for being mathematically accurate.
Gotchya. And I’d be surprised if those numbers were BE only because Wheeler was much much more productive in those games which would figure to have us bringing back less not more.

George Thompson, one of Al McGuire's early recruits, at Marquette, died today' at 74. He was a 6-2 power forward, from Brooklyn, who went on to play in the ABA and NBA. I was still in H.S. when I watched him lead Marquette to a win over SJU, in a very close, low-scoring game, at Alumni Hall.

ESPN Men's Basketball site has a projection for all conferences on what the '22-'23 rosters will look like. It includes players who return, those who departed and the new additions to the team. Most big east schools look to be at the 13 limit.

Agree . Louie Vs Ray Meyer every year would have been a good watch . Also too, we seem to have lost the traditional Niagara game as well. They could easily be scheduled instead of NJIT, Farleigh Dickinson , Monmouth Etc

Niagara will be in Queens the Saturday of Thanksgiving wknd 11/26.

Same thread states that this game was played annually for 50 consecutive seasons from 1945-1995. Matchup has a whopping 113 year history (1909), unreal.

Greg Paulus has been steadily trying to revive Niagara, cutting his teeth and gaining experience in the coaching ranks the right way, can’t say the same at Nova/Duke w their new head coaches.

Still remember our loss to Eagles in 84 - 85 season . Mullin missed two free throws very late in game .
