Around the Big East 19/20
Seton Hall completes 20 class;

For the final addition to its 2020-21 roster, Seton Hall basketball needed a center.

The Pirates found one over the border — and under the radar.

Jeff Ngandu, a 6-foot-9 native of Congo who attends Canadian prep power Orangeville in Ontario, announced his commitment Friday, choosing the Pirates over Arizona State, Cincinnati, Georgetown, Kansas State, LSU, N.C. State, Oklahoma and West Virginia

I was with Duane Woodward of Seton Hall when he first saw this kid in Montreal last September. If I had thought this kid was 1 iota special I would have let our staff know and my son and his teammates would be talking about the kid. Wishing the kid all the best, except when he plays SJU, and maybe he will develop over the next four years as Williard has done a nice job of developing players. But as of now he is a true diamond in the rough.

Val Ackerman notes that the Big East did have insurance for the conference tournament cancellation at Madison Square Garden. The pandemic is considered under the insurance umbrella.

Big East commissioner Val Ackerman said in a Zoom media call that if there are no students on campus, there will be no athletic events.

BE commish says sports won't be played if campuses aren't re-opened. Says those decisions will come in late-June, early-July. Also expects staggered starts.

John Fanta

Think about the locations of the 11 Big East schools. St. John’s and Seton Hall are in a totally different predicament than Creighton and Xavier. Staggered scheduling is a likely possibility, and it creates a complicated scenario. A lot of work to be done.

Val Ackerman gave the date of September 1, or around Labor Day, to come to a decision on the Big East Basketball season. That is typically around when the schedule comes out under normal circumstances.

Ackerman says it’s ‘certainly a possibility’ to run a sports season with fewer than 11 schools. NCAA minimum is 6. ‘You’ve got to be ready for anything here ‘

That last paragraph sounds pretty scary from an SJU perspective.
Seton Hall, Uconn, Gtown and Providence are also in hot spots. Same goes for DePaul in Chicago.
I'd say yukon has the best shot of the ones you mentioned of playing, with the others borderline at best. It would really honk me off if the BE runs with six schools and the traitors get to play.

UConn's campus has been beset with repeated outbreaks of Mad Cow disease, so that venue should also be avoided.

If they ban cow tipping when classes resume there's gonna be a riot in storrs.

Re Georgetown again. I understand that this is a top 10 so that is not really restrictive but this is a top 5 2021 kid from Wisconsin, Patrick Baldwin. He just released his top 10, schools like Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Michigan and UCLA are on it. Georgetown is also on it. This is a national top 5-10 kid. Not even the BE school from Wisconsin is on this kid's top 10.

Duke, Georgetown, Kentucky, Michigan, Milwaukee, North Carolina, Northwestern, UCLA, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

DePaul forward Paul Reed is bypassing his remaining college eligibility and signing with Ron Shade of Octagon for his professional representation, a source tells @247Sports.

Pat Lawless

T.J. Berger, a class of 2020 PG from @WTbbasketball (PA)/@NJShoreshotBoys, just committed to Georgetown.

McClung gone?

This kid is unranked. Looks like he previously committed to U of Penn. Dad is coach of his HS which is is big time prep program...to me looks like a play to get a big time 2 for 1 deal for Franck Kepnang or someone else there or future pipeline. Wouldn't be surprised if this is a walk-on vs. scholarship.

No idea on the to McClung but did read rumor that if he didn't stay in draft perhaps he was considering Va Tech ..

Anyone else hearing that McClung is transferring from Georgetown? Poor Ewing.

Lot of talent leaving the conference next season...

Edit- Just saw Paultzman and RedStormNC's posts above. Clearly their hunches were correct.

Wow, McClung not going pro but entering the transfer portal. What the hell is going on at G’Town. Can’t say I will shed a tear for them but it would be better for Big East if they are competitive especially with us. Still get a little juice when we beat them.

I think there are probably two trains of thought for the even higher than usual transfer numbers especially high profile. First there is likely some who want to move closer to home given the present situation. Can't blame them. Second is the likelihood that there won't be a college hoops season next year so transfers are likely being told they'll get their year of eligibility back and not miss any games. It's kind of like a preview of the 1 free transfer rule.

Ewing must be feeling pressure now.

"It was a number of different events that made me feel I had no choice but to transfer from Georgetown," McClung told ESPN. "I really wanted to stay, but things throughout my career made me realize that I couldn't.

"I'm looking for a place I can call home. A place I can be a part of a family and help them succeed."

Ouch, pretty scathing. I can’t say I’m sad because I have no love for Georgetown and we are on the upswing and unfortunately Ewing is going the way of Mullin. Not good for them and a good Georgetown is good for the Big East. The longer they hang on the worse they are, but at this point I’m sure he’s gonna stick at least another season or so.

Yikes. Didnt even tell his coach?? I hope we do not get involved here. Id pass on him. We have the kids we need.

I see him ending up in the ACC. Virginia or NC State.
