Around the Big East 19/20

Omer Yurtseven tells me that he has declared for the 2020 NBA Draft and will not return to Georgetown next season.

Significant Big East news.
Much like StJ’s, it appears that Georgetown’s experiment of hiring a head coach with no prior head coaching experience Is not successful.
They may not have the wins and losses that they had hoped for but IMHO Ewing did a great job with the cards he was deal this season. The few players he had really overachieved. He has also recruited well. If I was the AD I would not yet throw in the towel and would give him a couple of seasons more to properly right the ship.
Agreed. In terms of effort especially in recruiting Ewing>Mullin by a country mile. But having said that even with some legitimate excuses, the natives are going to get restless very soon along Wisconsin Ave..

I get the feel that it’s just another pro-style coach in Ewing and maybe a bit of a lack of discipline and vision overall. Too many inmates running the asylum last season and a lot of that comes from the top down. Louie Orr a good coach and recruiter has certainly helped overall. If Ewing can’t gain some traction with some consistency in terms of both style and recruiting I agree they’ll move on from him. I think he should probably get 2 more years to show what he can do.

When Goodie ranked the 10 best BE jobs he put Georgetown over Nova. EIther way it is a plum job. And Ewing or not the results will need to start matching the expectations:

Jeff Goodman
@GoodmanHoops
I am not saying to fire Patrick Ewing by any means. Certainly not now. I just think Georgetown should be a spot that is going to the NCAA tourney nearly every single year.

Every time I see you call him “goodie” I throw up a little in my mouth

Goodman may be a jerk, but I agree with him here. G'Town went from being frequently ranked and up there with the very best programs as a brand name featured in video games to almost a non-factor. Under Ewing they have been mostly meh. I know our conference is deep, but good teams still find ways to get separation like Nova, Creighton, SHU, etc. G'Town has taken a big step back since realignment if we're looking at their results as a whole.

Most of the Gtown I know are restless already. As much as they love Ewing they want better results.

The experiment might not be working but comparing Ewing with 15 years of NBA assistant coaching experience to Mullin who had sweet fa coaching experience is unfair to Ewing. Probably a situation where he's better suited to the pro game than college though.

Lithuanian Modestas Kancleris tells ESPN he has committed to Creighton in the 2020 class. The 6'9 forward was released from his scholarship with Grand Canyon following the coaching change. Was a national team player at the U16 and U18 levels and a two time NBA BWB participant.

Ha! You know that's going to happen! ;-)

Any of you guys listen to the 3-Man Weave podcast? If you're a fan of college basketball in general and not only SJU or the Big East it's a good one (especially during these long quarantine days) They cover every conference, lots of mid-major stuff too etc. 3 guys who sound like huge dorks but they're generally very knowledgable and informed on the sport. Anyway...

They had a question from a listener the other day about who would win the Big East next season and what other Big East team they think will out-perform expectations. Villanova was the quick unanimous choice for who would win the conference but they all listed St. John's as the team they thought would out-perform expectations and think Anderson will have us a border-line NCAA team next season (whenever that is). They only spent a minute on it (They also mentioned UConn which I unfortunately agree with. Bouknight is going to be a problem for every team) but I found it encouraging that other folks outside of our St. John's bubble are beginning to see us as a team on the rise.

I think the key will be Cole being a legitimate 3 pt threat and Posh giving us a scoring spark immediately if we are to be on the bubble or in the tourney. LJ needs to be back and looks like that's the case which is great. I saw another college hoops site predict us to finish 7th out of 10 since they didn't include UConn yet as they aren't officially in yet. I hope we also see progress from our returners e.g. Earlington, Roberts, Champ, etc.

Has done a good job...some bad breaks

You want evidence Georgetown is still a premium job. Moussa Cissa just cut his list to 6. He is a top 10 kid from CTK here in NY and is going to school currently in Tennessee. Kentucky, Memphis, Georgia, LSU, FSU and Georgetown. Again this is not a regional recruit for Georgetown. He did come from the DC area nor does he go to school there. He is a national recruit. Georgetown still has cache nationally. That is why their expectations should be pretty high.

His list is irrelevant when LSU and Memphis are just bidding for his services for a year

Agreed. Ewing did a phenominal job last year. After some of his kids getting kicked out of school and having the big fella and mcclung hurt and missing games, they were still competitive.

Amazing job by Ewing.

Georgetown’s Mac McClung has signed with Daniel Hazan, one of the 23 NCAA-certified agents, source told me. This allows him to retain his college eligibility.

Add Kentucky to that list as well. It'll probably come down to those 3 schools. If Georgetown lands him then IMO they've decided to wallow in the "mud."
