It pays to finish last.

Hard to believe ............ smh

Every other school with a bad coach is simply delaying the inevitable and extending him for a year because of the pandemic. DePaul, visionaries that they are, instead extend their coach by several years.

April first was yesterday--is this a "late" post?

========

thee is something to be said about allowing a college coach time to install his system ..... see Kevin Willard who had a mediocre record of 82 and 81overall and a miserable 30 - 60 after his first 5 seasons at Seton Hall but has since become a hot commodity among college coaches.

To his credit Leitao had a 19 - 17 winning record this season.

DePaul was 16-16 this season (after starting 12-1). They were 19-17 last season.

Leitao has had two runs at DePaul and was not terribly successful either time
It's easier to be lazy and extend a guy who has been mediocre at best
I'd rather have a hungry, young up and comer than Leitao, who will turn 60 next month

Depaul in a tough spot. He's recruited well there, better than they've had in a while. But he's not been a good coach otherwise. They underachieved this year. He had two NBA kids on that roster plus other good players like Moore and Coleman-Land. And still finished last.

Don't they have a top recruiting class coming in? I'm assuming the school wanted to preserve that. All the extension does is not make him a lame duck coach. He can still be fired anytime in the future.

He underachieved last year as well. I thought that team should have been upper half BE - although Gage, as a PG, was not very good. Charlie Moore would have elevated 19-20 team.

They could have used Pitino. That’s a school where he could have done some long term damage and he wouldn’t lose the incoming recruits.
He is getting the job done on recruiting front -
2021 - two 4+ star recruits :

Also do not see a strong market out there in terms of available coaches, not the most desirable job either
I don't give a crap if he recruited 10 4 star guys, he can't coach. He hasn't proven that he ever could coach. Everyone is so caught up in how many stars a recruit has, I prefer to watch guys play before deciding how good they are.

“Xavier, Providence, Cincinnati, Clemson, and DePaul are on me pretty hard,” Wiznitzer told Stockrisers.com. In addition, he said that Kansas State, Iona, Ohio State and Indiana are some of the newer schools to reach out and show interest in the 6-foot-11 big.

As far as visits go, he had scheduled an official visit to Providence scheduled for March. Due to the Corona Virus, that was forced to get cancelled but it hasn’t stopped Ed Cooley’s hard pursuit of one of his top targets. “Coach Cooley and I have been talking on the phone,” he said. Plus, he has a scheduled virtual call next week with Cooley and some members of his staff.

In addition, Xavier, one of the newest programs to offer will conduct their virtual visit with Wiznitzer soon as will DePaul’s staff.

Villanova’s Saddiq Bey wins the Julius Erving Award, given to the nation’s best small forward.

Myles Powell wins Jerry West Award, given to top shooting guard in country #shbb

Both good players but seeing them play last year, I would not think they they were both the best at their respective positions in the country.

Does DePaul have any commits for 2020?

Rhode Island transfer Tyrese Martin verbally committed to UConn on Tuesday, he tells 247Sports.

Fanta on Martin

Dan Hurley just picked up a significant transfer for @UConnMBB. Rhode Island sophomore Tyrese Martin is heading to the Huskies. A really tough match-up to defend at 6-foot-6, and a strong rebounder. He averaged 12.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this past season. #UConnYes

Good for Powell. A real warrior and an unselfish team first guy. Wish him all the best going forward.
