Big East Offseason Report: Power Rankings and Burning Questions for 2020-21

He's clueless.[/quote]

Why, it is about right? Many of you are way overstating the talent level on this team. I am still pointing towards year 3 for the big breakthrough year. Maybe next year, assuming there is a year, they can surprise. But this is still not a great roster. Lot of holes and not elite talent. I think if they can keep the core with Champagnie, Posh, Cole etc and add some elite talent for 2021 they can make a major jump. But they need to upgrade the talent still. That is not a criticism it is a fact. When you talk about SJU guys you rarely ever put it into context of what everyone else has or has done.

If I had to guess they will probably be by most a pre-season bottom 4 pick. Think about it they were probably middle of the pack or worse WITH LJ. Now he is gone with no major replacement for him on a 5-13 team from prior year. Seriously? What did you expect?

Based on talent ratings I agree we should not be ranked high in pre season predictions. OTOH coach CMA proved he can develop players and get them to play team bb, There are lot of intangibles other then player rankings. I’m hoping if things break right we could be middle of the pack BE.

Creighton recruiting well;

Jake Weingarten

Creighton's staff will virtually meet with four-star junior Alexis Reyes today, he told Stockrisers.com. They extended him an offer the other day and will look to close in on him.

This kid has a lot of upside. My nephew played with him at Cushing last year, so I got to see him a bit.

Ed Cooley tells me that Providence is attempting to get a waiver from the NCAA for Syracuse transfer Brycen Goodine to play immediately during the 20-21 season.

The Villanova Wildcats have secured two key pieces of its 2021 recruiting class with combo forward Trey Patterson and center Nnanna Njoku. Those two strong pieces have Villanova with the No. 6 class in the country currently.

Patterson, who has been a well known name on the circuit for a while now, is an explosive athlete who can put up points offensively and has promising defensive versatility.

Njoku is not the explosive athlete like Patterson, but he brings a physical presence to the paint and is an offensive threat facing the basket.

The recruiting focus of Villanova is now on shoring up its backcourt to team up with these two front court players

Creighton could have up to five scholarships to fill after the season due to graduation and early departures for the NBA, which is why the program's addition of four-star guard Ryan Nembhard was critical. The Blue Jays have also become a top landing spot for European talent thanks to the presence of Alan Huss on staff as he has developed great connections across the Atlantic Ocean.

One of those Euro talents is Jeremy Sochan, a four-star forward that will be completing his schooling in Germany after the pandemic interfered with his ability to travel back to the United States. Some programs may lose track of Sochan, but look for Creighton to be a finalist for him.

Domestically, keep an eye on Mason Miller, a four-star forward that is the younger son of Mike Miller, the former NBA star that left the college coaching profession last month. Nate Santos, someone built similarly to Miller, is also a top target for Creighton, as is Tucker DeVries, the son of former Creighton assistant and now Drake head coach Darian DeVries.

In all, look for Creighton to land at least one good-sized shot-maker, a scoring wing, a Euro and strike once or twice via the transfer realm.

Seton Hall’s Kevin Willard: Don’t delay college hoops season;

Willard’s suggestion is playing a conference-only season of 26 or so games in the Big East and starting the season in November. It would take advantage of students being away and also give the league wiggle room if games had to be postponed. The Big East has already moved to playing only conference games in fall sports. The only way Willard would be in favor of non-conference games is if other conferences had similar “strict” testing, safety and travel protocols as the Big East is still in the process of formulating.

Willard makes some valid points. I just hope there is a college hoops season

Willard makes a very intriguing case for a conference-only season with a November-start. His idea focuses on controlling the variables, reducing them to a workable level. I like the idea.
Gotta tell ya, he's a rival coach of the closest B.E. school to St. John's--all fodder for the 'not like' category--but he's impressed me the past couple years with his coaching and player-development skills.
Add this idea to the 'impressed' list.

What are they going to do about mid majors now? They all look forward to that 1 or 2 games a year they actually play a major program. Without non con that goes away. Mid majors would have no opportunities for signature wins. Gonzaga would only be tested by St. Mary's but run the table with everyone else. Crazy. Our record will hurt a lot as well without some cupcake padding.

Unfortunately the decision of P5 schools to play only conference games cuts deeper than just just loss of “signature wins“ for the mid major programs because mid majors depend upon “buy games” in football and basketball to finance their athletic budgets. Without the money games the mid majors will suffer financial hurt.

Below is an article from the IndyStar that describes the stress that loss of money games will have on mid major football programs, many of which are the mid major basketball programs.

Here is an excerpt:

“ “Florida State, essentially, saved people’s jobs,” Frazier told the Associated Press. According to that AP story, 39 Power 5 schools scheduled 49 “buy games” for the 2020 season for a total of $65 million. UMass is scheduled to receive $1.9 million to play Auburn, which means if that game is canceled — when that game is canceled — UMass will be out nearly 20% of its $10 million budget for football. Who’s going to pay for that loss? Perhaps the UMass track and field teams, next spring”

I voted in their poll
Option D is in the lead by far
Start in January, only play teams in your conference
Not ideal, but much better than nada
At this point, I'd sign on for that option

I want enough games so CMA will not having losing season. I want keep his streak of not having losing season. I dont know if we can finish above .500 playing conférence games only.

Not getting the benefit of conference only games. Why not develop a protocol and get other conferences to agree to them? Even in Big East, there is lots of travel involved- ie. Marquette (Wisconsin) and Creighton (Nebraska). Don't think this virus cares about conference affiliation.

I like the option of keeping the out of conference games but making them all local.

Have St johns play iona, hofstra, ruthgers, stoneybrook etc. That would be really cool.

Other locals like St. Peter's, Farileigh Dickinson, Fairfield, Marist, Post, could be in the mix as well, and more, if needed.
