Around the Big East 19/20

Looking at that lists can’t say we are doing great
Still have faith in our coach but it sure would be great and a big lift if we get a top 50 player

I'm sure most already know, but UConn is officially a member as of midnight last night.

I'm glad to see them return. I enjoy facing big brands with passionate fan bases, and they are certainly one of the biggest. Over the past few years we have lost our 2 biggest OOC rivals in Duke and Syracuse. Playing UConn 2X a year will be a solid replacement.

Is St. John's planning to play them at MSG? There were some rumors months ago about CA. IMO CA would be a bad decision. For one, it gives them bulletin board material and that's unnecessary. Let's beat them at MSG the same way we beat Duke, Nova, Cuse, etc. It also means thousands of St. John's fans wouldn't be able to attend as MSG should typically be packed (COVID aside). Playing them at MSG would also be great for TV. Imagine if those big MSG wins had the backdrop of our high school-looking CA instead. No thanks!
I pull for BE teams. I will NOT be pulling for UCONN in any capacity. I hope they finish dead last every year.
I don't disagree, I hope they finish last as well. Not even sure if I'll root for them OOC. That said, I'm glad to have a hated rival back because things have gotten a little stale with losing ALL of our most disliked rivals in Syracuse/Louisville/UConn/Duke/etc. Georgetown was never as big/obnoxious as UConn this century but they were supposed to help fill that void a bit. Nova is as classy a team you can get for one with so much success. Certainly not a bad thing, just different. I'd much rather have Nova than UConn.

IMO having a team or 2 like UConn is great in moderation.

We’ve had this discussion a couple times on here before, and I feel like I always end up alone on this subject,

But I feel like we have plenty of rivals in the new big east AKA teams and fanbase I kinda hate.

And listen, when it comes down to it, I’ll always root for a big East school in the big dance... but I’ve grown to hate Xavier and Nova.

But mostly Xavier. Honestly, I don’t think their fans have done anything wrong. But every time we play them, their players piss me off in some way shape or form. This year it was Naji Marshall and I’m still pissed we blew that game at MSG against them that should’ve been a win. Before that it was Macura and Blueitt. Always getting involved in scuffles with our players and they were premium floppers too. Idk maybe it’s just me but I have a hatred for them

Lavins last year when we swept them is one of my best memories of us in the new big east era

For me there are 2 reasons I don't hate the new Big East schools anywhere near as much as the big public schools from the old BE:

1. With conference realignment it's felt like Power 5/ESPN/big public schools against the Big East. Years later we are doing very well as a conference, but initially that was very much in doubt. Year 1 was rough (AAC way outperformed us, capped off by UConn's championship) and it wasn't really until Nova's championship in 2016 that people were forced to see us as a major player.

2. When I was in middle school/high school/college the only current Big East teams that were "big" were UConn and to a lesser extent Georgetown. I grew up in NC and PA and moved to NYC in 2012 for SJU's grad school. My first year at SJU was last year of the old Big East, and back then teams like Providence and Seton Hall were irrelevant while Xavier/Creighton/Butler were still mid majors that I rooted for or didn't care enough about. I think most dislike for college teams is formed during that middle school to college period, and outside of Georgetown/UConn the current Big East was hardly on my radar.

I think younger people will dislike teams like Xavier/SHU/Butler/Creighton/PC/Nova a lot more as they're now far more nationally relevant and also bigger rivals to us than they were just 5-10 years ago. Future generations I doubt will care much about teams like Louisville or WVU, and maybe even Syracuse if they go the way of BC.

Agree with Adam here. I think the biggest things that contribute to hating a league rival are the coach, the fans and how often they beat you. The players contribute as well but they change so often it's not as big a factor as the others at least for me. During BE glory years, UCONN & Cuse both had extremely obnoxious coaches in Calhoun & Boeheim and they've always had obnoxious fans, plus they were both very good. Nova has the classy Jay Wright and really pretty nice fans at least in my experience. In the pre-Wright days they weren't all that good except for their one miracle year where it was great to root for them to beat Gtown. I disliked
Georgetown almost as much as UCONN & Cuse in the John Thompson days, but that has changed over the years, partly because I was such a Ewing fan when he was with the Knicks it's hard to root against him now that he's their coach.
I have no negative feelings towards Depaul, Creighton, Butler or Xavier and always root for them in OOC games. I have always liked PC and kind of like the Hall because I lived in Jersey for years and they were another local team. It's funny, I loved Marquette back in the day when Al McGuire was their coach but have started to dislike them largely because of Wojo but nowhere close to my dislike of UCONN.

I hear ya. My all time least favorite Big East rivals are UCONN and Syracuse. For me, it's not even close.

I'm not happy UCONN is back in the Big East and worried they'll again dominate--driven by DH's insane recruiting energy and their obnoxious fan base.
But I trust CMA is the real deal: a great coach and a genuine person and believe he'll get his share of 4*'s and be able to compete with 'whomever' in the Big East.
So, while one side of my brain worries, the other says "Bring it!"

As far as the fan factor I have never seen any fan base anywhere near the level of awful as UCONN. They are insufferable to be around - win or lose. I get it college basketball is a business and they will sell tickets for all the BE schools but it sure comes with a price for the fans.

I hope Mike Cragg follows Ed Manetta’s lead. He made individual game tix Syracuse contingent on buying a package.

Whenever I hear these discussions about hating other teams, I think it is a long time since we were hated. I used to swear to my friends during the Norm era that other conference teams rotated losing a game to us just to make sure "Nice Guy" Norm, who no one hated, would keep his job.

I look forward to being hated, because no one hates a loser. Hopefully soon.

Unless he grew 2 inches he is much closer to 6 9. He is also not in great shape. Played against my son in 2018-2019 when he played for Champlain College and was nothing special. We were all surprised when he left Montreal last summer to move to Mexico City to play at NBA Academy and join fellow Montrealers Ben Mathurin ( Arizona commit ) and Olivier Maxime .... ( Clemson commit ) as he was not close to their level.
Never crossed my mind to let the staff know about Tre-Vaughan, however people can improve.

Just texted my son who said he knew about Providence and that Tre Posted that he has lost 40 pounds since moving to Mexico. He said he saw him recently and it is true.

Big East Offseason Report: Power Rankings and Burning Questions for 2020-21

#9. St. John’s: In its first season under coach Mike Anderson, St. John’s took a step up offensively and proved to be competitive despite a 5–13 Big East mark—but the team was thrown a curveball during the offseason when leading-scorer Figueroa decided to transfer to Oregon. The Red Storm will have to rely on Rasheem Dunn, Gregg Williams, Marcellus Earlington and guard Julian Champagnie to lead the charge and adjust without Figueroa’s 14.5 points per game.
