Expectations set by the most delusional fans on sports will never be met.

I’m sure 3-4 firings will do the trick, though.
So just to get this straight you are happy as long as they're better than Depaul most of the time?

I do think this is a good question, if the fans expectations are out of wack, then what should the expectations be? Make any mark you want, SJU has probably fallen short of it the past 20 years. Unless "non-delusional expectations" are 3 tournament bids in 20 years and 0 tournament wins in 18, then SJU has fell short of expectations.

The negativity can get a little crazy on here sometimes, as I am sure is the case for any message board after their team loses. But i really don't think fan expectations are the problem here. We are not a rooting for a mouse to win a dog fight here. Not demanding anything insane.

From what I saw everywhere before the season, making the tournament was the benchmark the goal for this team for most fans. If we do not achieve it, it is absolutely a disappointment and should be talked about as such.

Well said Jack.
However the lack of depth and height is the Achilles heal of this team as many of us who repeat ourselves have been saying since our head coach failed to show up for Femi and Richmond was AWOL. The only reason we have a full starting 5 is because Mustapha Heron became available. Otherwise we would be thinner and just a mid-major team.
Keita (knees), Heron (tendonitis) and Ponds (back issues), have made us another Mullin walking wounded team. The formula hasn't worked and the recruiting has been just average. Those that crapped on Mike Rice are reaping the rewards of questionable recruiting, game preparation and bench coaching.

Absolutely. While some of us redmen.comers may have made optimistic predictions before the season started in terms of making the sweet 16 or even elite 8, the majority here defined a satisfactory level of success for the year as at least making the Dance. This was not based on delusional expectations, as we were generally picked to finish no worse than 4th in the BE by most of the writers. We are still very much in the hunt to do that, but we've put ourselves a little behind the 8 ball with some unexpected losses at home. A win tonight will keep us very much in the hunt.

I admit I had pre-season moments of delusion, particularly once Heron became eligible, and I thought making the Sweet Sixteen was possible, but the basic default threshold from the get-go, to a come-back season was making the Dance.
And yeah, I would’ve liked 1 win as ‘desert’ for dancing, but at this point getting a ticket to March Madness is in doubt.
It is now show-time, 1 game at a time.

Now down 19, under 13
Howard with 36 on 12-21. Unless he and Marquette go completely in the tank the next 4 weeks not sure how he loses the POY race right now.

It's really a shame how Shamorie Ponds has regressed this season or, more to the point, has not progressed as a point guard. Just not playing smart basketball and was a big factor in keeping Butler in the game tonight.

Saw on This Week in the Big East that polled some of the BE coaches and Howard has a big lead followed by Booth. Looks like SP will have to settle for being BE POY on redmen.com.

Give him some credit, it's the only way '72 could think of to be negative about St. John's in a thread about M. Howard and Marquette.

Three BE games tonight:

Providence at Nova
Creighton at Xavier
Georgetown at Seton Hall
Hoping Providence & Creighton both lose. As for last game, winner will be tied with us for 3rd. I'd prefer Georgetown win, as I think Hall is more of a threat for third place.

Unfortunately, I really feel like we need to root for Creighton and Georgetown, so our wins against them remain Quad 1.

Whatever happens tonight just need to make sure nova wins. I can’t remember the last time they lost two straight big east games, and I highly doubt they will lose 3 straight which would be on the table if they lose tonight

With these records possible we only get 2 bids if the bottom 8 keep beating each other evenly and keep losing to Nova and Marq. Hope at least 2 of these teams get hot and create some separation and good conf record to get in. Right now looks like we would be one of them with work still to do.
