Around the Big East 18/19

We might have lost another quad 1 victory with this game.
X game not on Dish, but boxscore shows both teams shot it poorly. Creighton only scores 2 in the overtime. Three teams at 5 and 7. Wouldn't want to predict who ends up third, but a victory this weekend puts us in a great spot.

Think creighton was at #57 going in to the game. That would be a a big drop to out of 75.
I thought they were closer then that, but I might have confused them with somebody else. It's getting tough to remember who's where.

This conference is doing everything it can to shoot itself in the foot. Xavier is terrible this year. I was expecting a blowout from Creighton.

Willard doing great job this season at SH righting ship & trending at right time. Looking like a four bid BE perhaps.

Updated standings:
1) Villanova (11-1)
2) Marquette (10-2)
3) Seton Hall (6-6)
4) St. John's (6-6)
5) Butler (5-7)
6) Georgetown (5-7)
7) DePaul (5-7)
8 Creighton 4-8
9) Providence 4-8
10) Xavier 4-8

Isn't Creighton dealing with injuries? Pretty sure Zegarowski is out, besides, they never recovered from the beatdown we gave them in Omaha.:) ;)

Yes, three or four guys were out in recent games. Last night Creighton blew game with two point lead & ball and 20 seconds or so left. They inbounded ball from their side of court to Xavier’s and it was intercepted for easy tying bucket. Earlier they lost to Marquette in similar fashion. Poor McDermott lol

Yes, plus they had 3 chances at a three to tie it up on last possession including a wide open look from the corner from Mintz at the buzzer that missed just short. Tough loss on the road. As we've seen repeatedly, there are no easy BE games this year.

Pretty amazing that SHU has the same conference record as us in a year when they have 1 true star and then a bunch of solid but nothing great players who are young and inexperienced. They just lost among the most in the nation in terms of talent after last year and they may be a tourney team. We have tons of talent and tons of experience. If Willard was here doing what he is this year with this young inexperienced roster, we'd be throwing a parade for him.

He could never do what he is doing at SJU because they would have fired him years ago for "only" making the tournament.

Basing my observation simply on the eyeball test, after watching all the SJU games and about five SHU games I have the impression SHU players seem to play with more intensity than SJU.
Maybe it's an underdog mentality but they seem to take each game more serious.

Fordham96 wrote that back to back 10-8 seasons should get you fired here. Lol

It will probably come down to the Februray 23rd game at MSG, to decide which of us finishes with a better conference record.

Other then that, you'd think Seton Hall would have the inside track schedule-wise, because they finish with back-to-back home, while we finish with back-to-back road. However, those home games for them are Marquette and Villanova, so who knows?

What's really ticking me off right now, is that they currently hold the three seed only because of that 8-on-5 game they beat us in, back in December.

If the season ended today, after Jay Wright, I think Willard runs second in BE Coach of the Year voting.

No doubt both have done exceptional jobs this year, but I think Wojo has just as good a case. Marquette had the best OOC in the league and also beat Nova and Seton Hall head to head.

Mullin has a chance if the Johnnies finish strong, but as of today I'd put those 3 others ahead of him.

This is one of the most impressive jobs Wright has done IMO.

Seton Hall has much more talent than our fans give them credit for. Powell was their best player last year. McKnight is the best on-ball defender in the conference. Nzei has been there for 20 years.

Willard would have been fired here. Kudos for SH having patience with him.

Not only our fans.
According to the Preseason Coaches Poll Seton Hall was predicted to finish 8th in Big East (with only one point more than the ninth team):

Giving too much credit to Willard this year in my opinion. They still have a very tough portion of their Big East schedule remaining. They could easily go 2-6 or even 1-5 in these last 6.

Yeah, but the difference between 3 and 10 was always a small one to everyone.

Yes, this appears to be one of the few years where the coaches and "experts" got it right, in that they said it was Villanova and Marquette, followed by everyone else.

Those were big wins for us and the Hall this week. Gave both of us, for now, some breathing room in trying to avoid the bottom four.

They play to their coach's personality, as do we. Enough said.
