Around the Big East 18/19

I was just taking a look at the KenPom rankings, and was shocked to see that Butler who is 10-5 is ranked one spot ahead of SJU. This is how you know these rankings are a meaningless farce.

Let's take a look at Butlers 5 losses:

-Georgetown at home by 8pts (who SJU beat on the road)
-Florida on the road by 34pts (yikes)
-Indiana at home by 3pts
-St. Louis on the road by 12pts
-Dayton (Battle of Atlantis) by 5pts.

Their best win by far is also vs Florida (who also blew them out more recently) or yesterday vs. Creighton. Yet according to ole Kenny this is a better team than St. John's who is 14-1* and just came off blowing out the AP ranked #16 team by 20 and a solid Georgetown team on the road.
My guess with these ranking systems is that you get too much credit for "playing" teams that are "ranked" higher according to that same ranking system. I don't think enough credit is given to actually "winning" those games. Analytics can be a good thing, too much analytics can be a bad thing.
Agreed. The old saying is true. If you torture data enough, it will tell you anything!
Depaul leading the Hall by 9 at the half, 34-25.
Damn the Big East is a really tough league.
On another note Marcus Howard is absolutely amazing versus Xavier today. Highlights what a great job our Defense did against him.
I'd rather the top be tougher and the bottom have 3 clear teams to beat up on like in year's past. Every game this year will be a battle and there will be fewer chances for resume builders.

Per @JPPelzman

Seton Hall fortunate to be down 5 having made only one 3 in 1st half. Max (Strus) leads for DePaul was 15

Hall kept composure & got back in this. Will DePaul fold once more?

DePaul up 13 now. Max Strus is playing better and better. He reminds me of Joe Harris of the Brooklyn Nets who played college ball at Virginia

Rough game for Hall.

Still, top half of the league has gotten off to a great start.

Nova 2-0
St. John's 2-1 (loss @ Hall)
Seton Hall 2-1 (loss @ DePaul)
Marquette 1-1 (loss @ St. John's)

Aside from the Hall slip up, that's perfect for the league. Hopefully 3 ranked teams tomorrow.

Nice win by DePaul.

Taurean Thompson of SH hit three of the ugliest treys I've ever seen and then an ugly turn around. Reminded me a lot of Simon. Willard just kept letting him shoot.

DePaul has nothing inside, so we should be able to go two games with Keita playing 6-8 minutes and resting up for Creighton.

They have Femi Olijubi who ain't bad, but I hear ya.
Happy the Hall lost, but they're a very well-coached team, with dangerous players.
Definitely, thought DePaul would blow the game.

Looks a little goofy to me. Only an inch taller than Clark and he's not a back to the basket threat. He's better suited for a 18-20 mpg bench role in the Big East IMO.

This is the best year in memory to go small in the conference. Outside of Govan there are no real killers.

Struss is a unique player, though. 6'11" perimeter player. He should be able to just shoot over our guards. Hopefully, he's off the mark on Saturday.

Yeah, Govan is the real deal underneath. No question.
Femi looked good to me underneath a couple times during the game, bouncing off of big guys and making buckets in close.
But Govan a big threat.
Damn, what a win, y'day against G*Town down 'there'!
