Around the Big East 18/19

Providence opens as 2.5-pt home dogs against Villanova. hoping to avoid losing back to back home games.

Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser gave us a nice shout out On ESPN's PTI at the end of the show.

12 noon - Creighton at Butler - FS1
2:00 PM - Villanova at Providence - FOX[/quote]

Big game for Providence. They lost their Big East home opener to Creighton. So I'm sure they want to avoid stating out 0-2 with both losses coming at home.

Agree Room 12 - Also big game for Butler for the exact same reason.

Providence digging a big hole on way to two home losses, down 12 to Nova w 6 minutes left

Friars now down by 4 with 44 seconds left. I do not want them to win. I don’t want to face Nova with them coming off a loss. Wright is too smart a coach for them to lose 2 BE games in a row.

Wow they just blew 18 seconds (Prov) without getting a shot. If Mullin were Ed Cooley, we would be KILLING him.

Coaching college athletes can be a frustrating experience . Prov, down four with 28 secs to go. Cooley watches his player dribble the ball out past the three pt line for 19 secs without trying to penetrate or shoot.
Cooley gets to call a time out with about eight secs to go but the game was lost. What was the player thinking?

Sunday, January 6th:

12 noon - Xavier at Marquette - FOX
1:00 PM - Seton Hall at Depaul - FS1

Big East is off on Monday, and SJU-Nova is the only matchup on Tuesday.

Good Xavier @ Marquette game on Fox right now.

Fox discussed us for a few minutes, said we should be ranked on Monday.

Obviously would be great if Marquette could win this. May have 3-4 Big East teams ranked tomorrow.

Watching this game between Marquette and Xavier and you realize what a solid win SJU had in such a dominating manner. Although, Marquette is very 3 happy. When they fall great, If they don't... not so much.

I was just taking a look at the KenPom rankings, and was shocked to see that Butler who is 10-5 is ranked one spot ahead of SJU. This is how you know these rankings are a meaningless farce.

Let's take a look at Butlers 5 losses:

-Georgetown at home by 8pts (who SJU beat on the road)
-Florida on the road by 34pts (yikes)
-Indiana at home by 3pts
-St. Louis on the road by 12pts
-Dayton (Battle of Atlantis) by 5pts.

Their best win by far is also vs Florida (who also blew them out more recently) or yesterday vs. Creighton. Yet according to ole Kenny this is a better team than St. John's who is 14-1* and just came off blowing out the AP ranked #16 team by 20 and a solid Georgetown team on the road.

Very important to fare well against nova and Marquette during regular season. Winning 3/4 would be huge. So far so good.

Depaul leading the Hall by 9 at the half, 34-25.
Damn the Big East is a really tough league.
On another note Marcus Howard is absolutely amazing versus Xavier today. Highlights what a great job our Defense did against him.

My guess with these ranking systems is that you get too much credit for "playing" teams that are "ranked" higher according to that same ranking system. I don't think enough credit is given to actually "winning" those games. Analytics can be a good thing, too much analytics can be a bad thing.
