Around the Big East 18/19

Agree! No idea how anyone couldn’t see that he was out coached this game. I mean he does go at least 9 players deep and his players, many being over 20 years old and more highly rated were outclassed tonight. No idea what he is thinking only playing two of his freshmen Swinder 12 mins and Quinerly 1 min.

:)
Penn will win the Ivy this year. Best basketball environment in the Ivy. Legit players with size. Coach wears a white shirt and tie. Was rooting hard for Nova but Quinerly had a really bad game and that was the key to the loss. Jay Wright also never took his jacket off so his players didn't follow his instructions. Bad body language all night by the Wildcats. Eric Pascal played at his real height tonight. He was easily 2 inches shorter than the Quaker kid who stood 6'8.

Sense J’rann Brooks not happy at USC & they clearly are recruiting over him with powerhouse class in wings
Yup - shocked if he'd come back our way though, think his issue with us was distance.

It's so weird how Jay Wright can go from stinking for years to being good enough to win national championships and then back to losing to inferior teams. How do you go from great to lousy coach in 5 months?

It's almost like the quality of players has something to do with it. But that would be crazy!

Yeah, Jay Wright missing the NCAAs every 7 years, this time due to a surprise NBA move, is pretty much the same as what's been going on on Union Turnpike. LOL

I can see the parallel, one school is a #1 seed or #2 seed every year the last 5 years in the NCAA's, wins 4 BE regular season titles(finishing second last year) and 3 BE Tourney titles, 2 National Titles in that same stretch then proceeds to lose not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 UNDERCLASSMEN to the NBA draft in the same year. He also just finished a 25 game winning streak against in the Big 5 series (Penn, Temple, St. Joe's and LaSalle). The other school has finished 5th, 5th, 10th, 7th, t-9th over the same period in the BE. No post season wins, 1 non-descript NCAA tourney appearance. I don't understand, you don't see the symmetry?

BTW-I would be careful in writing off Villanova this year in the BE even with arguably his worst team in 6 years. To me they are still the team to beat. He is a great coach and they have enough talent to beat anyone in the league.

His brother went to Dartmouth, so if distance was an issue, it never was one for mom.

Jay Wright would have been fired here if he had the start he had at Hofstra and would have been on the hot seat entering year four if he had the start he had at Villanova (6-10 in the Big East year three!).

Wright is unquestionably the best coach in and the best representative for the Big East. His struggles this year show how important the right mix of talent, experience, skill, and chemistry is to winning.

By the third year of a new coach we are so negative all opposing coaches have to do is show our forums to potential recruits...then the coach doesn't get extended and it limits recruiting even more, and the start the firing chants because he can't win enough. Jarvis>Roberts>Lavin>Mullin and could probably go back to Fran and Mahoney. Hell, many posters were even upset with Louie!

Whk is comparing Villanova to SJU at a program level? Who is writing off Villanova this year? They have two fifth-year seniors who have been part of two national championship teams--one of which led Nova in scoring in the first title game. They have six guys that were ranked inside the top 85 of the RSCI in their respective classes--and that doesn't include Paschal, who is projected as a second round NBA draft pick next draft--or the senior transfer, Joe Cremo, who was 1st team All-American East last year. They also have size and depth.

The fact is they aren't very good RIGHT NOW. With all that talent and the best coach in the conference. But our fans can't give Mullin a break for not winning with what he had last year. I'd be absolutely shocked if they didn't make the NCAAs and finish top 3-4 in the Big East with that roster, but that doesn't change the fact that they aren't very good now. And if Jay Freaking Wright can be at this level with the roster he has then Mullin should be given some slack for what he did last year.

Just saw a blurb from Nova Nation that Javon Quinerly will transfer - played his last game for Nova.

Sitting is only acceptable if you are getting paid anyway. On to a team with a football program! Or UConn!

We all have been disappointed in the recruiting of high schoolers by SJU but the number of transfers available has changed the landscape of college recruiting in recent years
More and more players in their first and second years are transferring because they are unhappy with the playing time they are getting and the number who are eligible to transfer with immediate eligibility is exploding. That number is expected to be over a hundred next spring.

I only saw one tweet about it but not sure how credible the poster is (he appears to be an SJU fan...maybe a poster here?)

And now with Colorado vs New Mexico, we get Bill Walton as a commentator. I honestly can’t take his schtick. Time to change the channel.
I mentioned my “annoyance” of listening to him on another thread. II watched the Gonzaga/Washington game with him on the broadcast but last night I turned the channel.
I enjoyed listening to his unique approach to broadcasting, especially his doing the Lobo howl throughout the game.

Someone is going to get a great player. I don't know what he's got between the ears or what kind of teammate he is, but he's got some serious talent.

If he could not make it at Nova, he has issues. Maybe too many people telling him how great he is. Hate to see a young man run when he is faced with adversity. Remember too, he is already 20 years old. One of the problems with kids reclassifying is that you do not get any better playing against kids two and three years younger than you.

If you are a Point Guard and can't play for Jay Wright, that is on you, not him. Problem is kids today want instant gratification and are unwilling to work for what they want. Microwave Generation.

I agree with you on all counts, but sometimes the situation isn't great. Gillespie was made for Jay Wright and he has two years of experience over the more talented Quinerly. And Booth is 5th year senior.

Baker Mayfield was once behind Davis Webb and Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech before he transferred. He then ended up blocking the 2018 Heisman winner, Kyler Murray for three seasons.

I may have been wrong onQuinerly transferring. Saw one blurb on it and have seen nothing else. Sorry if I jumped the gun.
