Around the Big East 18/19

Per Jerry Carino
Despite seemingly strong performances, Myles Powell does not advance to the NBA Combine. Probably puts a big dent in his draft prospects although he'll still have individual team workouts.

I hope Providence throws some money at him. I think Cooley would be well served staying there, where he has his own recruiting and coaching enclave built already. He’s a native and is great for the Big East. FWIW I think Michigan more likely to hire Willard than any other Big Easy coach.

Cooley always said that, as a Providence native, this was his dream job
Let's see what happens if Michigan throws a bundle of $$$ at him
He's a very good coach and recruiter
I can see him being very successful at Michigan
But, as a BE fan, I hope that he stays

If it comes down to strictly dollar$, there's no way Providence can compete with Michigan.

Oh God.....restart the madness.

I really hope our coaching positions don't become a revolving door every few years which unfortunately seems to be the trend with the huge football schools poaching. There's just no way any Big East school can compete with them in terms of facilities, money, etc. It's important that we keep some of the good coaches for 10+ yrs so they become big names if they aren't already like Wright. I remember in the Big East 30 for 30 they said a big part of what made the conference so successful were the amazing coaches and their personalities. Having top notch coaches and keeping them long term is very important IMO. I always get nervous about the future of the conference as big football schools raise the bar beyond our reach in most cases for the best coaches. Only 2 legitimate critiques of the Big East now are 1) poor tourney performance and 2) lack of coaching stability/constant poaching.

I was searching, as well. I see him mentioned in several articles as a possible candidate, but it seems like speculation.

Are you going to do this every time a Big East coach is mentioned as a potential candidate for a big time job? Obviously you're a big fan, but if people here didn't know you we'd assume you were trolling.

The ACC had a coach poached this year, the American had a coach poached this year. The Big Ten just had one of their biggest coaches poached by the NBA. It happens to literally every conference and will continue happening.

The Big East, meanwhile... has kept everyone or upgraded.

I can't even imagine what some on here would be like if Nova didn't suddenly become a blue blood overnight. If the Big East didn't have MSG locked up long term. If we weren't consistently getting half our conference into the Dance. Have to learn to be grateful for what you have when things could be so much worse. Really, we're in a great position.

Could be an SEC battle for Villanova transfer guard Jahvon Quinerly. Alabama Arkansas and Georgia expected to get visits as well as Pitt.

During the six seasons of the "New Big East", we have lost two coaches to big time programs (Mack to Louisville) and (Holtmann to Ohio State). Wright, Cooley, McDermott and Willard have been here all six years and Wojo I believe came year 2. Georgetown, St. John's and DePaul had to replace there coaches. That is not exactly a lot of turnover in today's game. Wright and McDermott seem like lifers and Ewing isn't leaving Georgetown to go to a Power 5 school. I would be very surprised if Anderson or Leitao at there age are going anywhere either. The other five could very well be poached if they win. I would hope this happens slowly and if we only lose another two coaches over the next six years that would be great.

As for tournament success that is a little more of a concern to me. in addition to Villanova, it would be nice to see more teams advancing to the second weekend. This was a particularly bad season. Hopefully that improves and we are part of that resurgence.

Tom Crean now gaining some recruiting traction at Georgia. Currently has the 9th ranked 2019 class.

Cream was hired 1 year ago.
Wouldn't it be sweet if St. John's is in a solid position with 2020 recruits this time next year?
One thing that seems certain: this Staff will work it..

Sources: Michigan AD Warde Manuel expected to speak with Providence’s Ed Cooley about UM basketball job Monday, Juwan Howard on Tuesday.
